1. About Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave Vietnam)

1.1. Location and How to Get There

Sung Sot Cave covers over 12,000 square meters, making it the biggest and most famous cave in Halong Bay, particularly on Bo Hon Island. Conveniently located in the heart of Halong Bay, it is approximately 14 kilometers from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf in Halong City.

To reach Sung Sot Cave from Halong City center, follow Hai Quan Street for about 4 kilometers until you arrive at Bai Chay Tourist Wharf. From there, you can choose between two transportation options:

  • By Canoe: Ideal for travelers short on time, a 4-to-8 seat canoe costs around 1,200,000 VND per hour.
  • By Boat: A more budget-friendly option, boat tours cost around 200,000 VND per person and provide a scenic experience.

1.2. The Legend of Sung Sot Cave

Like many other caves in Halong Bay, Sung Sot Cave has a fascinating legend. According to folklore, this cave was where Thanh Giong, a legendary Vietnamese hero, ascended to the sky after defeating Chinese invaders. Inside the cave, visitors can see stalactites resembling the giant horse and sword left behind by Thanh Giong. Small ponds within the cave are believed to be the footprints of his horse.

2. The Stunning Beauty of Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot Cave features two chambers. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by the “waiting room,” where enormous stalactites, resembling chandeliers, hang 30 meters high. A narrow passage leads to the second chamber, which boasts an impressive freshwater lake, beautifully shaped stalagmites and stalactites, and unique rock formations. Additionally, playful monkeys can often be spotted in the area.

3. How to Visit Sung Sot Cave in Halong Bay

3.1. Ticket Prices and Entrance Fees

Tourists can buy tickets at either Tuan Chau International Passenger Port or Halong International Passenger Port. Sung Sot Cave is part of Halong Bay Sightseeing Route 2, which also includes Bai Tu Long Bay, Tuan Chau Island, Bo Nau Cave, Ho Dong Tien Cave, Luon Cave, Trong Cave, Trinh Nu Cave, and Me Cung Cave.

  • Day tour ticket: 290,000 VND per person
  • 2-day, 1-night ticket: 590,000 VND per person
  • 3-day, 2-night ticket: 790,000 VND per person

3.2. Renting a Boat to Explore Halong Bay

After purchasing your ticket for Sightseeing Route 2, you will need a boat to explore Halong Bay. The Halong Bay Management Board regulates boat fares, which typically cost around 200,000 VND per person.

There are three ways to arrange a boat trip:

  • Contact the Halong Bay Management Board’s ship arranger
  • Book through a travel agency or tour operator
  • Rent directly from a boat owner
