Sung Sot Cave 2026: Halong Bay's Largest Cave Guide

Sung Sot Cave (Hang Sửng Sốt, “Surprise Cave”) is the largest show cave in Halong Bay, on Bo Hon Island about 14 km from Tuan Chau port. Discovered by the French in 1901, it has two vast chambers covering about 10,000 m², filled with stalactites and stalagmites. It is visited on official route VHL2, included in the 250,000 VND route fee.

Status (checked October 2026): open daily as normal for boats on route VHL2 (adult route fee 250,000 VND, plus port fee). Visits stop only when the authorities suspend sailings for storms, mainly between June and October.

Is Sung Sot Cave Worth Visiting?

Yes, if you only see one cave in Halong Bay, make it Sung Sot. It is larger and more varied than the other show caves, and the climb to the entrance gives a fine view over the bay. The main downside is crowds: at midday on route VHL2 dozens of boats arrive at once, so overnight cruises that visit early or late give a calmer experience.

Best for: first-time visitors, families with older children and anyone interested in geology.
Skip if: you have limited mobility; the visit involves steep steps up to the entrance and uneven, sometimes damp paths inside.
Short on time: a VHL2 day cruise combines Sung Sot with Ti Top Island and Luon Cave in about 5–6 hours on the water.

History of Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot Cave was discovered by the French in 1901, who named it the “Grotte des Surprises”. The Vietnamese name, Sửng Sốt, means “surprised” or “amazed”, the feeling visitors have when the small entrance opens into the enormous second chamber. Like the other caves of Halong Bay, it was formed as rainwater and seawater slowly dissolved the limestone over hundreds of thousands of years, before the sea rose to surround the island. Today it is managed by the Ha Long Bay Management Board as a highlight of route VHL2, and the cave is lit and fitted with a paved path and handrails.

What to See at Sung Sot Cave

1. The climb and the view

From the pier on Bo Hon Island, a stone stairway climbs to the entrance about 25 m above sea level. Pause at the top to look back over the lagoon, where dozens of junks are moored between the karsts.

2. The first chamber

The first chamber is shaped like a broad theatre hall. Its ceiling is covered with small dome-like hollows, and stalactites hang above a large stone pillar near the entrance.

3. The second chamber

A narrow passage leads into the second chamber, the “surprise”: a huge space large enough to hold thousands of people, with a ceiling about 30 m high. Natural light enters near the far end, lighting up the formations.

4. Stalactites and stalagmites

Thousands of formations line the path. Guides love pointing out shapes said to resemble animals, soldiers and even a general with his horse; the coloured lights make them dramatic, though the natural colours are best seen in daylight near the exit.

5. The exit viewpoint

The path ends high on the cliff, with a view across the bay before you walk down to the pier, completing a loop of about 500 m.
