Noon Gate (Ngo Mon) of the Imperial City of Hue under a blue sky

Hue

Imperial palaces, royal tombs among pine hills and pagodas on the Perfume River – Hue, Vietnam's last royal capital, is the country's richest heritage city.

Hue was the capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945 and is the country’s foremost heritage city. Its monuments along the Perfume River, from the Imperial Citadel to the royal tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh, form the Complex of Hue Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Hue’s royal court music (Nha Nhac) is also UNESCO-listed. Since 1 January 2025, Hue has been a centrally run city. Halfway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and about 100 km from Da Nang, it is an essential stop on any central Vietnam itinerary.
