Thuy Xuan Incense Village Hue: Colourful Photo Stop
Thuy Xuan Incense Village (Là ng hương Thủy Xuân) is a traditional incense-making community in Thuy Xuan Ward, about 7 km south-west of central Hue, on the road to Tu Duc Tomb. Families have made incense here for around 700 years, and their rainbow-coloured bundles fanned out to dry make one of Hue’s most photogenic stops. Visiting is free.
Status (checked October 2026): open daily as normal; there is no ticket. In the October–December rainy season fewer bundles are set out to dry, so displays can be smaller on wet days.
Why Thuy Xuan Incense Village is worth seeing:
- Colour everywhere: red, yellow, pink and purple incense sticks arranged like giant flowers.
- A living craft: watch artisans roll scented powder onto bamboo sticks by hand.
- Try it yourself: many households let visitors roll their own incense.
- Free and quick: 20–40 minutes is enough.
- On the tomb route: right on the way to Tu Duc, Dong Khanh and Khai Dinh tombs.

History of Thuy Xuan Incense Village
Incense is central to Vietnamese spiritual life: it is burned at family altars, pagodas and temples, especially on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month and at Tet. Villagers in Thuy Xuan have made incense for about 700 years, and the craft has been handed down from generation to generation.
Traditional Thuy Xuan incense came in just two colours: a brown scented coating and a red stick. Over the past decade or so, as the village became a tourist stop, households began dyeing the bamboo stems in many bright colours and arranging bundles in fan and flower shapes. Today some families still make incense entirely by hand for visitors, while others use machines to meet commercial demand.
What to See at Thuy Xuan Incense Village
1. The incense “flowers”
The highlight is the bundles of sticks spread in circles to dry in the sun, creating giant blooms of red, yellow, pink and purple. Most households along Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street have a display in front.
2. Hand-rolling incense
Artisans dip split bamboo sticks in water and roll them in a scented powder, repeating the process to build up the coating. The powder blends ingredients such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, star anise, pomelo peel and traditional herbs.

3. Dyeing and drying
About half of each bamboo stem, the part left uncoated, is dyed. The sticks are then dried in the sun for several days, which is why the village is most colourful on bright, dry days.
4. Conical hats and souvenirs
Many stalls also sell conical hats (non la), scented cones, cinnamon and small gifts, and several make colourful backdrops for photos.
5. The road to the tombs
The village sits among pine hills, close to Vong Canh Hill, Tu Hieu Pagoda and the tombs of Tu Duc and Dong Khanh, so the drive itself is attractive.
