Tour Information & Itinerary

This private Da Nang – Hue – Hoi An tour 7 days (6 nights) gives central Vietnam the time it deserves: the Hai Van Pass, two nights in Hue for the Imperial City, a dragon-boat trip to Thien Mu Pagoda and three royal tombs, then three nights in Hoi An with My Son Sanctuary, a herb-village cooking class and Ba Na Hills or the Cham Islands.

Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we tailor to your flights, pace and hotel choice. Since 1 July 2025 Hoi An, My Son and the Cham Islands belong to Da Nang city. In Hue, Can Chanh Palace inside the Imperial City is being rebuilt (planned to finish around 2028–2029), and Truong Tien Bridge has been under repair since 1 June 2026 (about 150 days), closed to traffic from 21:00 to 05:00. Cham Islands boats generally run from about March to August; outside that season Day 6 is Ba Na Hills or a beach day. October to December is the rainy season, when Hue and Hoi An can flood for a day or two.

Is 7 Days Enough for Da Nang, Hue and Hoi An?

Yes – seven days is the comfortable length for central Vietnam. Compared with our 5-day tour, you gain a second night in Hue, so there is time for the Perfume River by dragon boat and three royal tombs rather than one, and a longer stay in Hoi An with a countryside day and a choice of Ba Na Hills or the Cham Islands. You change hotels only twice.

The distances are easy: Da Nang to Hue is about 100 km over the Hai Van Pass, Hue to Hoi An about three hours by car through the tunnel, Hoi An to My Son about 40 km, and Da Nang Airport about 30 km (45 minutes) from Hoi An. What seven days cannot add comfortably is the Phong Nha caves or a second region – for those, ask us to extend the trip.

Tour Highlights

1. Da Nang: Lady Buddha and the Dragon Bridge

Begin with the 67 m Lady Buddha at Linh Ung Pagoda on the Son Tra Peninsula, then the Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire and water at 21:00 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

2. Hai Van Pass and Lang Co

The old coastal road over the Hai Van Pass, about 21 km long and climbing to around 496 m, is one of Vietnam’s great drives, with views back over Da Nang Bay and down to the lagoon at Lang Co.

3. Hue Imperial City

Built from 1804 under Emperor Gia Long, the Hue Imperial City is the heart of the Complex of Hue Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Enter through Ngo Mon Gate and walk past Thai Hoa Palace to the Forbidden Purple City and the Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theatre.

4. The Perfume River by Dragon Boat to Thien Mu Pagoda

Glide upriver in a painted dragon boat to Thien Mu Pagoda, founded in 1601, whose seven-storey, 21 m Phuoc Duyen Tower is the unofficial symbol of Hue.

5. Three Royal Tombs: Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh

Each tomb shows a different side of the Nguyen dynasty: the symmetrical Minh Mang Tomb (1840–1843) among pine hills and lotus lakes, the romantic lakeside Tu Duc Tomb (1864–1867), and the Tomb of Khai Dinh (1920–1931), with dazzling glass-and-porcelain mosaics.

6. Marble Mountains and Hoi An Ancient Town

Climb into the caves and pagodas of the Marble Mountains, then walk Hoi An Ancient Town (UNESCO) with your guide – the restored Japanese Covered Bridge, which reopened in August 2024, assembly halls and merchant houses – and stay for the lanterns.

7. My Son Sanctuary

My Son Sanctuary is a jungle valley of Cham Hindu tower-temples built between the 4th and 13th centuries and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We arrive early, ahead of the heat and the crowds.

8. Tra Que Herbs and Cam Thanh Basket Boats

Tra Que Vegetable Village, about 3 km from the old town and one of UN Tourism’s Best Tourism Villages in 2024, is where you garden and cook lunch; later you spin through the nipa palms of the Bay Mau coconut forest in a round basket boat.

9. Ba Na Hills or the Cham Islands

Ride the cable car to Ba Na Hills, at around 1,400 m, and walk the 150 m Golden Bridge held up by two giant hands – or, from about March to August, take a speedboat to the Cham Islands, part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2009, for snorkelling and a seafood lunch.

Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Choose this tour if you:

  • want Hue, Hoi An and My Son – central Vietnam’s three World Heritage sites – without rushing any of them;
  • enjoy history, architecture and food as much as beaches;
  • like the idea of a scenic drive over the Hai Van Pass rather than a flight or train;
  • prefer a private guide and car, with the freedom to linger or move on.

Consider another option if you:

  • have only five days – the Da Nang – Hoi An Tour 5 Days keeps Hue, My Son and Hoi An but drops the second Hue night and Day 6;
  • want a slower beach holiday – the Da Nang – Hoi An Tour 4 Days stays in one area and includes Ba Na Hills;
  • are travelling in October or November, when storms and floods can disrupt the Hai Van Pass, Hoi An’s riverside and the boats;
  • only have a day in Da Nang – choose our Da Nang City Tour 1 Day.

Accommodation Options

We spend the first night in Da Nang near the beach, two nights in Hue on the south bank of the Perfume River, and three nights in Hoi An, close enough to walk or cycle into the old town. Two nights in Hue avoid a long same-day return, and three nights in Hoi An make it your base for My Son, the countryside and Day 6, so you unpack properly. Your hotel category is the same at all three stops.

Tier Da Nang (1 night) Hue (2 nights) Hoi An (3 nights)
Superior 3-star hotel near My Khe Beach 3-star hotel near the Perfume River 3-star boutique hotel near the old town
First Class 4-star sea-view hotel 4-star riverside hotel 4-star hotel or riverside resort

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

These notes come from years of arranging central Vietnam tours for international travellers.

  • Weather: February to April is the most comfortable; June to August is hot. From September to December heavy rain is common, and in storms the Hai Van Pass road may be closed – we then use the tunnel.
  • Hue opening hours: ticket desks open 6:30–17:30 until 15 October and 7:00–17:00 in winter; we visit the Imperial City in the cooler late afternoon and the tombs in the morning.
  • Dress code: cover shoulders and knees for Thien Mu Pagoda, the royal tombs, Linh Ung Pagoda and the Marble Mountains pagodas.
  • My Son timing: leave Hoi An by about 7:00 – the towers are at their best in soft light and the valley gets very hot by late morning.
  • Ba Na Hills: the summit is often cooler and foggier than the coast; bring a light jacket and keep the day flexible if clouds sit on the mountain.
  • Hoi An tailors: order on Day 4 if you want clothes made – that leaves two days for fittings before you fly.
  • Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027; some sites change hours and hotels fill early.

Afternoon: Your guide and driver meet you at Da Nang International Airport, only about 3 km from the city centre. Drive 20–25 minutes to the Son Tra Peninsula and Linh Ung Pagoda, home of the 67 m Lady Buddha, with views across Da Nang Bay. Check in near My Khe Beach.

Evening: Free. Stroll the Han River promenade to the Dragon Bridge and try local seafood – see our Da Nang food guide.

Note: the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (about 15 minutes); shows can be cancelled in storms. For a late flight we visit Son Tra on Day 2 morning instead.

Day 2: Da Nang – Hai Van Pass – Lang Co – Hue Imperial City

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hue

Morning: Drive north over the Hai Van Pass, about 21 km of winding road that climbs to around 496 m, stopping at the summit for the views and the old Hai Van Gate. Descend to the lagoon and beach at Lang Co.

Afternoon: After a seafood lunch, continue to Hue (about 100 km from Da Nang in total). Check in, then explore the Hue Imperial City with your guide: Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, the Forbidden Purple City and the Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theatre. Your ticket is included.

Evening: Free to walk along the Perfume River – see our Hue food guide for bun bo Hue and royal-style dishes.

Note: Can Chanh Palace is being rebuilt until around 2028–2029, so part of the Imperial City is fenced off. In bad weather the pass road may be closed; we then take the Hai Van Tunnel.

Day 3: Hue – Dragon Boat to Thien Mu Pagoda – Tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hue

Morning: Board a private dragon boat on the Perfume River and cruise upstream to Thien Mu Pagoda, founded in 1601, with its seven-storey Phuoc Duyen Tower. Your driver meets you at the pagoda for the Tomb of Minh Mang, about 12 km south-west of the centre, with its symmetrical courtyards and lotus lakes.

Afternoon: After lunch, visit the Tomb of Khai Dinh, with 127 steps and dazzling mosaics in Thien Dinh Palace, and finish at the lakeside Tomb of Tu Duc, about 6 km south of the centre, where the emperor wrote poetry while he lived. All tickets are included.

Evening: Free. Optional: a royal court music (Nha Nhac) performance or a royal-style dinner – ask us when you book.

Note: in the October–December rainy season we may swap the boat for a car if the river is high; the order of the tombs changes with the light and the crowds.

Day 4: Hue – Hai Van Tunnel – Marble Mountains – Hoi An Ancient Town

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hoi An

Morning: Drive south through the Hai Van Tunnel to Da Nang (about 2.5 hours) and visit the Marble Mountains: take the lift up Thuy Son, then explore its caves, pagodas and viewpoints.

Afternoon: Lunch, then a short drive to Hoi An and check in. In the late afternoon, walk through Hoi An Ancient Town with your guide and your old-town ticket: the Japanese Covered Bridge, the Fujian Assembly Hall, a merchant house and Hoi An Market.

Evening: Free as the lanterns come on. Optional: a sampan ride on the Thu Bon River – see our Hoi An food guide for cao lau and banh mi.

Why three nights in Hoi An: it is the base for My Son, the countryside and Day 6, so you stay in one hotel until your flight.

Day 5: My Son Sanctuary – Tra Que Cooking Class – Cam Thanh Basket Boat

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hoi An

Morning: Leave at about 7:00 for My Son Sanctuary, about 40 km (1 hour) away. Explore the Cham tower-temples with your guide and, if timings suit, watch a short Cham dance performance. Your ticket is included.

Midday: Back near Hoi An, join farmers in Tra Que Vegetable Village: hoe and water the herb beds the traditional way, then cook three or four local dishes in a hands-on class – they become your lunch.

Afternoon: Ride a round bamboo basket boat through the nipa palms of the Bay Mau coconut forest in Cam Thanh, about 5 km east of the old town, then relax at your hotel.

Note: if you prefer, swap the cooking class for a bicycle ride through the rice fields.

Day 6: Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, or the Cham Islands

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hoi An

Option A – Ba Na Hills (all year): Drive about 1–1.5 hours to Ba Na Hills and ride the cable car to around 1,400 m. Walk the Golden Bridge, held up by two giant hands, explore the French Village and the gardens, and have lunch on the mountain before returning to Hoi An.

Option B – Cham Islands (about March to August): Transfer to Cua Dai pier and take a speedboat (about 15–30 minutes) to the Cham Islands, about 18 km offshore. Visit the fishing village and market, snorkel over the coral and enjoy a seafood lunch on the beach.

Late afternoon: Free in Hoi An, or a beach day at An Bang Beach instead of either option.

Note: boats to the Cham Islands are cancelled when weather warnings are issued, and the Ba Na cable cars can pause in storms; we decide together the day before.

Day 7: Free Morning in Hoi An – Da Nang Airport Departure

Meals: Breakfast · Overnight: None

Morning: Free time for a last coffee, a tailor fitting or the beach.

Afternoon: Check out and transfer to Da Nang International Airport (about 30 km, 45 minutes) for your onward flight. End of the tour.

Note: we time the transfer so you reach the airport about 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one.

FAQs about the Da Nang – Hue – Hoi An Tour 7 Days
1. Is 7 days enough for Da Nang, Hue and Hoi An?

Yes. Seven days gives you an afternoon in Da Nang, two nights in Hue for the Imperial City, the Perfume River and three royal tombs, and three nights in Hoi An for the old town, My Son Sanctuary, the countryside and Ba Na Hills or the Cham Islands, plus a free morning before your flight.

2. How is this tour different from the 5-day Da Nang – Hoi An tour?

The 7-day tour adds a second night in Hue, with a dragon-boat trip to Thien Mu Pagoda and the tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh, plus a Tra Que cooking class, a Cam Thanh basket-boat ride and a full day at Ba Na Hills or on the Cham Islands.

3. Why stay two nights in Hue and three nights in Hoi An?

Two nights in Hue let you see the Imperial City in the afternoon and spend a whole day on the river and the tombs without long drives. Three nights in Hoi An make it your base for My Son, the countryside and Day 6, so you change hotels only twice.

4. How far is Hue from Da Nang and Hoi An?

Hue is about 100 km from Da Nang. Over the Hai Van Pass with photo stops it takes most of a morning; Hue to Hoi An through the Hai Van Tunnel is about 3 hours by car.

5. What happens if the Hai Van Pass is closed by bad weather?

In storms or heavy rain the pass road can be closed or unsafe, so we drive through the Hai Van Tunnel instead. You lose the summit views but not any time.

6. Is the Hue Imperial City open in 2026?

Yes, it is open daily. Can Chanh Palace inside it is being rebuilt until around 2028–2029, so a section behind Thai Hoa Palace is fenced off, but the main sights can be visited.

7. Which royal tombs do we visit in Hue?

Three: Minh Mang Tomb (1840–1843), known for its symmetry and lotus lakes; Tu Duc Tomb (1864–1867), a lakeside retreat; and Khai Dinh Tomb (1920–1931), with 127 steps and glass-and-porcelain mosaics. All tickets are included.

8. Can I see a royal court music performance in Hue?

Yes, as an optional extra. Nha Nhac, the royal court music recognised by UNESCO, is performed at the Duyet Thi Duong Royal Theatre and at some evening events; tell us when you book and we will arrange a performance or a royal-style dinner on Day 3.

9. Are entrance tickets included?

Yes. Tickets for the Hue Imperial City, the three royal tombs, the Marble Mountains, Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary are included, as are the dragon boat, the Tra Que cooking class, the basket boat and your Day 6 choice. Optional extras are not.

10. Should I choose Ba Na Hills or the Cham Islands?

Ba Na Hills, with the Golden Bridge and the cable car, works all year and suits families. The Cham Islands are better for snorkelling and quiet beaches, but boats generally run only from about March to August and are cancelled in rough seas.

11. What is the best time for this central Vietnam tour?

February to April is the most comfortable, and May to August is hot but dry and best for the Cham Islands. September to December is the rainy season, with possible floods in Hue and Hoi An in October and November.

12. Is this tour suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. The pace is easy, there are only two hotel changes and you can skip the steps at Khai Dinh Tomb or use the lift at the Marble Mountains. Ba Na Hills, the basket boats and the cooking class are popular with children.

13. Can I take the train between Da Nang and Hue?

Yes. The coastal railway takes about 3 hours and is a scenic alternative to the Day 2 drive; we buy the tickets and your driver meets you at Hue Station. You would miss the Hai Van Pass summit and Lang Co by road.

14. Can you add Phong Nha, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to this tour?

Yes. Phong Nha is about 4 hours north of Hue and needs two extra days, and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are short flights from Da Nang or Hue. We plan the whole trip as one private itinerary.

15. How do I book this tour or get a price?

Send us your travel dates, group size and hotel category through the Tour Inquiry form. We reply within 24 hours with a tailored quote – booking direct gives you a local price with our best price guarantee.
