Long sandy Lang Co Beach between the mountains and the sea
Updated:

Lang Co Beach: Bay, Lagoon & Seafood Between Hue and Da Nang

Lang Co Beach (Bãi biển Lăng Cô) is a long white-sand beach on Lang Co Bay at the foot of the Hai Van Pass, in Chan May – Lang Co Commune at the southern tip of Hue City. About 60 km south of central Hue and roughly 30 km north of Da Nang, it is famous for clear water, Lap An Lagoon and fresh oysters. The beach is free to access.

Status (checked October 2026): open as normal and free. October falls in the rainy, stormy season (roughly September–December), when the sea is often rough and swimming may be restricted; follow lifeguard flags and check typhoon warnings before travelling.

Why Lang Co Beach is worth seeing:

  • Mountains meet the sea: a crescent of sand backed by the Truong Son range and the Hai Van Pass.
  • A “world’s beautiful bay”: Lang Co joined the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World in 2009.
  • Lap An Lagoon: a calm brackish lagoon with oyster farms and mountain reflections.
  • Seafood: oysters, clams, squid and fish at simple restaurants by the lagoon.
  • Perfect road-trip stop: on the classic Hue–Hai Van Pass–Da Nang–Hoi An route.

Is Lang Co Beach Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially as a stop between Hue and Da Nang, or for a quiet beach night or two. It is less developed than My Khe Beach in Da Nang, with a slower, village feel, and the setting between mountains, lagoon and sea is one of the most beautiful on the central coast. In the stormy season it is better for views and seafood than for swimming.

  • Best for: road-trippers, couples, families and travellers looking for a calm beach resort.
  • Skip if: you want nightlife, or you are travelling in October–December mainly to swim.
  • Short on time? Stop for an hour on the drive over the Hai Van Pass: photos at the lagoon, a walk on the sand and a seafood lunch.

Background: Lang Co Bay

Lang Co was a fishing town under Phu Loc District until 1 July 2025, when Vietnam reorganised its local government and the town merged with Loc Tien, Loc Vinh and Loc Thuy communes into the new Chan May – Lang Co Commune of Hue City. Hue itself became a centrally governed city on 1 January 2025.

The bay sits where the Bach Ma–Hai Van mountains drop to the sea, on the climatic boundary between northern and southern Vietnam. A narrow sand spit separates the open sea from Lap An Lagoon, one of the typical lagoons of central Vietnam. On 6 June 2009 the provincial authorities received the title “Lang Co – a world’s beautiful bay” from the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. The deep-water Chan May Port nearby welcomes cruise ships, and the area forms the Chan May – Lang Co Economic Zone. Learn more about Chan May – Lang Co on Wikipedia.

What to See at Lang Co Beach

1. The main beach

Fine white sand and clear, gently shelving water make the main beach pleasant for swimming in the dry season. Casuarina trees give some shade, and local restaurants and small hotels line the road behind.

2. Lap An Lagoon

Also called An Cu Lagoon, this brackish lagoon lies between the beach and the Bach Ma mountains. Its calm water, oyster frames and mountain reflections are especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, and a waterfront road makes it easy to explore.

3. Oyster farms and seafood

Lap An is the largest oyster-growing area of Lang Co Bay. Lagoon-side restaurants serve oysters, clams, crabs and fish; choose from the tanks and agree the price by weight before cooking.

4. The Hai Van Pass

South of the beach, the road climbs the Hai Van Pass towards Da Nang, with sweeping views back over Lang Co Bay. At the summit stands Hai Van Gate (Hai Van Quan), a 19th-century fortified gate managed by the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre; entry costs 70,000 VND for adults (children free).

5. The railway along the coast

The North–South railway runs beside the bay and over the Hai Van Pass, one of the most scenic train rides in Vietnam. Lang Co has its own small station.

6. Resorts and the northern beaches

North of the town, along the Chan May coast, large resorts such as the Laguna Lang Co complex offer golf, spas and private beach frontage.

7. Bach Ma National Park

Inland to the north-west, Bach Ma National Park protects forested mountains, waterfalls and old French villa ruins; it makes a full-day nature trip from Lang Co.
