Ninh Binh is a province about 90–100 km south of Hanoi, famous for limestone karsts rising from rice paddies and rivers. Its centrepiece is the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex, where rowing boats glide through caves on the Trang An and Tam Coc rivers. Above them, the 486 steps of Mua Cave lead to the best view in North Vietnam. Ninh Binh was also the cradle of the Vietnamese state: Hoa Lu was the capital from 968 to 1010. Easily reached on a day trip from Hanoi but best enjoyed with an overnight stay, Ninh Binh welcomed about 19.4 million visitors in 2025 and is one of the fastest-rising destinations in Vietnam.

Best Time to Visit Ninh Binh
The most pleasant months are March–May and September–November. The rice fields of Tam Coc turn golden from mid/late May to early June, with a second crop ripening in September and early October, and lotus blooms in late spring and early summer. Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with afternoon storms; high water can occasionally close some cave routes. Winter (December–February) is cool and often misty. The festival season after Tet (January–March) is lively but crowded, especially at Bai Dinh and Trang An.
