Tour Information & Itinerary
This private Hanoi – Mua Cave – Trang An tour 1 day takes you about 2 hours south of Hanoi to Ninh Binh for a rowing-boat trip of about 2.5–3.5 hours through the water caves and island temples of UNESCO-listed Trang An, a local lunch, and the climb of about 500 steps to the Mua Cave viewpoint. You are back in Hanoi by about 19:00.
Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we adjust to your pace and the weather. Trang An runs three boat routes; any of them can close for a short time when heavy rain raises the water in the caves (Route 3 was paused from 31 July to 2 August 2026), so your guide confirms the open routes on the day. The Mua Cave steps are steep and slippery after rain.

Is the Hanoi – Mua Cave – Trang An Tour Worth It?
Yes, if you want the fullest boat trip in Ninh Binh and one great view in a single day. Trang An is the core of the UNESCO-listed landscape: you row through a chain of water caves, across quiet lakes and past island temples for close to half the day. In the afternoon, the climb at Mua Cave shows the karst landscape from above, over the Tam Coc valley.
It is a full day: about 4 hours on the road in total, a long seated boat ride and a steep climb, with heat and humidity from May to September. If you would rather not climb, the Hoa Lu – Trang An day tour keeps the Trang An boat trip and replaces Mua Cave with the temples of the ancient capital.
Tam Coc vs Trang An: Which Boat Ride Should You Choose?
Both rides are inside the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, and both use small rowing boats. The difference is length and scenery.
| Trang An (this tour) | Tam Coc | |
|---|---|---|
| Boat time | About 2.5–4 hours, depending on the route | About 1.5–2 hours |
| Caves | Up to about 9 caves on Route 1 | 3 river caves |
| Scenery | Lakes, gorges and island temples | River through rice fields between karst peaks |
| Stops on the way | Short walks at temples and pagodas on the route | No stops; the boat turns at the third cave |
| Best for | Travellers who want a longer, varied boat trip | A relaxed day with more free time |

Tour Highlights
1. Trang An Boat Trip
At Trang An, a local rower takes four or five passengers through low water caves, some so low that you must duck, and stops at island temples such as Trinh Temple, where by tradition boats pause to “report” to the guardian spirits. Trang An is the core of the Trang An Landscape Complex, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as Vietnam’s first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site (Google Maps · Tripadvisor).
| Route | Time | Main stops |
|---|---|---|
| Route 1 | About 3–4 hours | Trinh Temple, the Dark, Light and Wine-making caves, Tran Temple – the most caves (around 9) |
| Route 2 | About 2.5–3 hours | Lam Cave, Cao Son Temple, Suoi Tien Temple, Vu Lam palace area |
| Route 3 | About 3–3.5 hours | Trinh Temple, Hang May (the longest water cave, close to 1 km), Suoi Tien, Vu Lam palace area |
2. Mua Cave Viewpoint
Mua Cave (Hang Mua) sits at the foot of Lying Dragon (Ngoa Long) Mountain. The cave itself is small; the reason to come is the climb of about 500 stone steps to the summit, where a stone dragon winds along one ridge and a small shrine with a white statue of Quan Am, the Goddess of Mercy, stands on the other peak. The view takes in the Tam Coc valley and the karst towers towards Trang An (Google Maps · Tripadvisor).
3. Karst and Rice-Field Scenery
The short drive between Trang An and Mua Cave runs past rice fields, lotus ponds and limestone towers. In late May and early June the rice turns gold; from about late May to July the lotus pond at the foot of Mua Cave is in bloom.
4. Lunch with Ninh Binh Specialities
Lunch is at a local restaurant in Ninh Binh, where the menu usually includes Ninh Binh specialities such as goat meat and crispy rice (com chay) alongside Vietnamese staples. Vegetarian and other dietary needs can be arranged in advance.
Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Choose this tour if you:
- want the longest and most varied boat trip in Ninh Binh, plus the classic view from above;
- are reasonably fit and happy to climb steep, uneven steps after a long boat ride;
- enjoy photography – caves, temples on the water and the Mua Cave summit;
- prefer a private day with your own guide and flexible timing.
Consider another option if you:
- have limited mobility or knee problems – the climb is the core of the afternoon, and some Trang An caves require ducking low;
- find 2.5–3.5 hours in a small boat too long – Tam Coc’s 1.5–2-hour ride is easier;
- want history as well as scenery – a Hoa Lu and Trang An day adds the 10th-century capital;
- dislike long road days – staying a night in Ninh Binh avoids the return drive the same day (where to stay in Ninh Binh).

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
These notes come from years of arranging Ninh Binh day trips for international travellers.
- Start early: boats leave the Trang An wharf in the order visitors arrive, and queues build from late morning, especially at weekends and on Vietnamese holidays.
- Mind your head: several caves are so low that you need to bend forward; keep cameras on a strap and hands inside the boat.
- Bring sun protection: the boats have no roof, so a hat, sunscreen and water matter even on cloudy days.
- Use the temple stops: the short walks at island temples are your chance to stretch your legs during a long ride.
- Wear shoes with grip: the Mua Cave steps are uneven stone and slippery after rain; climbing later in the afternoon is cooler.
- Carry small notes: tips for the rower and drinks are paid in cash in Vietnamese dong.

About 11 hours door to door. We pick you up in Hanoi between 07:30 and 08:00 and drop you back at about 18:30–19:00. Around 4 hours is driving (about 2 hours each way), which leaves roughly 6 hours in Ninh Binh.
2. How far is Trang An from Hanoi?
The Trang An boat wharf is about 90–95 km south of Hanoi, roughly 2 hours by car on the Hanoi – Ninh Binh expressway. Mua Cave is about 15–20 minutes by road from Trang An.
3. How long is the Trang An boat trip?
About 2.5–4 hours, depending on the route. Route 2 is the shortest at about 2.5–3 hours, Route 3 takes about 3–3.5 hours, and Route 1, with the most caves, takes about 3–4 hours.
4. Which Trang An boat route is best?
Route 1 has the most caves (around 9), Route 3 includes Hang May, the longest water cave at close to 1 km, and Route 2 is the shortest, with temples and the Vu Lam palace area. On a day that also includes Mua Cave, Route 2 or Route 3 usually fits best; your guide confirms which routes are open on the day.
5. How many steps are there at Mua Cave?
About 486–500 stone steps lead from the foot of Lying Dragon (Ngoa Long) Mountain to the viewpoints at the top. Most people take about 20–30 minutes to climb at an easy pace.
6. Is the Mua Cave climb difficult?
It is short but steep. The steps are uneven, can be slippery after rain and are hot in summer, so you need reasonable fitness and good knees. Anyone who prefers not to climb can wait at the foot of the mountain.
7. Is Trang An or Tam Coc better?
Trang An is longer and more varied, with more caves, lakes and island temples; Tam Coc is shorter, at about 1.5–2 hours, and runs through rice fields with three caves. Choose Trang An for the fuller boat trip, or our Mua Cave – Tam Coc day tour for a more relaxed pace.
8. Is Trang An a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Yes. The Trang An Landscape Complex was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed natural and cultural site, the first of its kind in Vietnam. It also covers Tam Coc, Hoa Lu and the Mua Cave area.
9. What is included in the tour?
Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a private car or van with driver, an English-speaking guide, the Trang An boat ticket, the Mua Cave entrance ticket, lunch and bottled water. Drinks with lunch, tips and personal purchases are not included.
10. Is this a private tour?
Yes. The tour runs privately for your own party, with your own guide and driver, so we can adjust the timing, the boat route and the pace to suit you.
11. Is the tour suitable for children and older travellers?
The Trang An boat trip suits all ages, and life jackets are provided on the boats. The Mua Cave climb is the demanding part: fine for active children and fit seniors, but not for anyone with limited mobility, who can skip it.
12. What should I wear and bring?
Wear shoes with a good grip, plus a hat and sunscreen, as the boats have no roof. In some caves you need to duck low, so leave large bags in the car. Bring water and, from June to September, a light rain jacket.
13. Does the tour run in the rain or high water?
Boats run in light rain. After heavy rain, the authorities can close a route when the water in the caves rises – Route 3 was paused from 31 July to 2 August 2026, for example – and your guide then takes another open route.
