Is 5 Days Enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay?

Yes – five days is the classic length for seeing all three without rushing. You get one full day in Hanoi, one day in Ninh Binh, which is only about two hours from Hanoi by expressway, and two days on Halong Bay with an overnight cruise, plus a free morning before your flight.

What five days cannot do is everything. The tour returns to Hanoi after Ninh Binh rather than staying overnight there, so Trang An, Mua Cave and Bai Dinh Pagoda are not on the standard programme. If they matter to you, ask us to add a sixth day or a night in Ninh Binh.

Tour Highlights

1. Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple

Walk the trading streets of the Hanoi Old Quarter, then cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple on its island in Hoan Kiem Lake, the city’s best-loved landmark.

2. Temple of Literature

Founded in 1070 to honour Confucius, the Temple of Literature also housed the Imperial Academy, regarded as Vietnam’s first national university. Its courtyards and stone stelae of doctoral laureates are among the calmest corners of central Hanoi.

3. Tam Coc Rowing-Boat Ride

At Tam Coc, local rowers – many using their feet – take you along the Ngo Dong River through three low caves between limestone peaks and rice fields. The ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and the area is part of the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.

4. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Hoa Lu was Vietnam’s capital under the Dinh and Early Le dynasties in the late 10th century, before the court moved to Thang Long (Hanoi) in 1010. You visit the temples of King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh.

5. Halong Bay Overnight Cruise

Halong Bay was first inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and, since 2023, forms part of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage Site. Staying overnight on board lets you see the karsts at sunset and sunrise, kayak or take a bamboo boat, and explore a cave such as Sung Sot Cave.

Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Choose this tour if you:

  • are visiting North Vietnam for the first time and want the three big names in one short trip;
  • prefer a Hanoi hotel base to changing hotels every night – you sleep in Hanoi on three of the four nights;
  • are travelling with children or older relatives and want a private guide, driver and flexible pace.

Consider another option if you:

  • dislike long road days – Day 2 and Day 3 each involve about 4 to 5 hours of driving in total;
  • want hiking and mountain scenery – our 3-day Hanoi – Sapa tour is a better fit;
  • need guaranteed sailing on fixed dates in the storm season: Halong cruises can be suspended by the port authorities, mainly between June and October;
  • want the Mua Cave viewpoint – its climb of about 500 steps is not included as standard, though we can add it.

Accommodation Options

Hotels are chosen for location – within walking distance of the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake – and for clean, quiet rooms. The cruise category is selected to match your hotel level and confirmed when you book.

Tier Hanoi hotel (3 nights) Halong Bay cruise (1 night)
Superior 3-star boutique hotel in or near the Old Quarter Cabin with private bathroom on a standard overnight cruise
First Class 4-star hotel around the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake Cabin with private bathroom and window or balcony on a 4-star cruise
Deluxe 5-star hotel in central Hanoi Balcony cabin on a 5-star cruise

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

These notes come from years of arranging North Vietnam tours for international travellers.

  • Tam Coc’s golden season: the rice along the river turns gold from late May to early June – the most photogenic weeks of the year. After the harvest the fields are bare for a while, so ask us if you are travelling in June or July.
  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: it normally opens in the mornings only and is closed on Mondays and Fridays. In 2026 it is also closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November; on those dates you can still see it from Ba Dinh Square, and we spend more time at the other sites. Knees and shoulders must be covered.
  • Halong Bay weather: the storm season runs roughly from June to October. When a storm warning is issued, the Quang Ninh authorities can suspend sailings at short notice – we then re-plan your days with you. Winter (December to February) is cool and often misty, so bring a warm layer.
  • Passport on Day 3: carry your original passport – cruise operators must register every passenger before boarding.
  • Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. Hotels and cruises book up early and many Old Quarter shops close for several days.
  • What to pack: comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a light rain jacket, swimwear for the cruise, and clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples.
  • Money: carry some Vietnamese dong in small notes for drinks, snacks and tips; drinks on the cruise are usually charged separately.

Evening: Free. Try street food or egg coffee near the lake.

Note: if your flight lands in the afternoon, we adjust the order of the visits. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum opens on mornings except Monday and Friday and is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 – tell us in advance if it is a priority.

Day 2: Hanoi – Ninh Binh (Tam Coc, Hoa Lu) – Hanoi

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi

Morning: Leave your hotel at 08:00 for the drive of about 2 hours (around 95 km) south to Ninh Binh on the expressway. At Tam Coc, board a small rowing boat on the Ngo Dong River for a ride of about 1.5–2 hours through three caves, past limestone peaks and rice fields.

Afternoon: Lunch at a local restaurant, then visit Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Vietnam’s capital in the late 10th century, with the temples of King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh. Both sites lie within the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.

In the afternoon, kayak or take a bamboo boat around a sheltered lagoon, and visit an island or beach such as Ti Top Island, depending on the route assigned to your cruise.

Evening: Watch the sunset from the sundeck, then enjoy dinner on board. Some cruises offer squid fishing after dinner.

Note: the exact order of stops depends on the cruise and the route approved by the Halong Bay authorities; it is confirmed when you book. Cruises can be rerouted or suspended in bad weather.

Day 4: Halong Bay – Sung Sot Cave – Hanoi

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (brunch on board) · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi

Morning: Wake up to the bay with tea or coffee (many cruises also offer a short tai chi session). After breakfast, visit Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, one of the largest caves in Halong Bay, reached by a flight of steps. Back on board, join a Vietnamese spring-roll cooking demonstration and check out of your cabin.

Afternoon: Brunch as the ship returns to the marina, then disembark around midday and drive back to Hanoi, arriving mid- to late afternoon.

Evening: Free in Hanoi.

Day 5: Hanoi – Noi Bai Airport Drop-off

FAQs about the Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay Tour 5 Days
1. Is 5 days enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay?

Yes. Five days gives you a full day in Hanoi, a day trip to Ninh Binh, a 2-day, 1-night Halong Bay cruise and a free morning before your flight. To add Trang An, Mua Cave or Sapa, extend the trip by one to three days.

2. What is the best 5-day itinerary from Hanoi with Halong Bay and Ninh Binh?

The classic order is Day 1 Hanoi city tour, Day 2 Ninh Binh (Tam Coc and Hoa Lu), Days 3–4 Halong Bay overnight cruise and Day 5 departure – exactly the route of this tour. It keeps the longest drives apart and leaves you in Hanoi for your flight.

3. How far is Ninh Binh from Hanoi and how long is the drive?

Ninh Binh is about 95 km south of Hanoi, roughly 2 hours by car on the expressway. On this 5-day tour you go there and back in one day with a private driver.

4. How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay? Can you fly?

The drive from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Marina in Ha Long takes about 2.5 hours on the expressways. There are no scheduled flights between Hanoi and Halong Bay, and the seaplane service stopped operating on 1 April 2026.

5. Is a Halong Bay day trip or an overnight cruise better on a 5-day Hanoi tour?

An overnight cruise is better: a day trip means about 5 hours of driving for only a few hours on the water, while staying overnight lets you see the bay at sunset and sunrise. That is why this tour includes one night on board.

6. Does this tour visit Tam Coc or Trang An in Ninh Binh?

The standard tour visits Tam Coc and Hoa Lu. Both Tam Coc and Trang An are inside the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex, and we can swap Tam Coc for a Trang An boat trip on request.

7. What is the best time for a Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay tour?

October to December and March to May usually bring the most comfortable weather. Late May to early June is best for golden rice at Tam Coc, while June to October is the storm season on Halong Bay.

8. Can a Halong Bay cruise be cancelled because of the weather?

Yes. The authorities can suspend sailings when a storm warning is issued, mainly between June and October. If that happens during your 5-day tour, we re-plan the affected days with you.

9. Is the Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour 5 days private?

Yes. You have your own English-speaking guide and private car or van on land; on Halong Bay you stay in a private cabin on a cruise shared with other guests. Small-group join-in departures can be arranged on request.

10. Is this 5-day Hanoi tour suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. The pace is easy and the guide and driver are yours, so stops can be shortened. Sung Sot Cave and some temples involve steps, so let us know about any mobility needs when you book.

11. Can I customise the Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour or add Sapa?

Yes. Common changes are adding 2–3 days in Sapa, cruising Lan Ha Bay instead of Halong, a two-night cruise, a night in Ninh Binh or a hotel upgrade. Send your ideas through the Tour Inquiry form.

12. What is included in the 5-day Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong tour?

Included are airport transfers, 3 hotel nights in Hanoi, 1 night on the cruise, private transport, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees and boat rides in the itinerary, and 4 breakfasts, 4 lunches and 1 dinner. Flights, visa fees, insurance, drinks and tips are not included.

13. Do I need a visa and passport for this Hanoi – Halong Bay tour?

Most visitors need a Vietnam e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, while citizens of some countries can enter visa-free for up to 45 days – check the current rules before you travel. Carry your original passport: it is required for hotel and cruise check-in.

14. What should I pack for 5 days in Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay?

Pack comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a light rain jacket and swimwear for the cruise. Bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, and a warm layer from December to February.

15. How much does the Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour 5 days cost, and how do I book?

Prices depend on your dates, group size and hotel tier, so they are given on request. Send your travel dates through the Tour Inquiry form on this page and we will reply within 24 hours with a quote.
