Mua Cave (Hang Mua): Climb 486 Steps to Ninh Binh’s Best Viewpoint (2026 Guide)

Mua Cave (Hang Múa) is a limestone peak in Ninh Binh, about 4 km from Tam Coc, famous not for its small cave but for the climb of about 486–500 stone steps to a dragon-topped summit with the best view over Tam Coc’s river and rice fields. Entry costs 150,000 VND per person, and the climb takes about 20–30 minutes each way.

Status (checked October 2026): open daily, about 6:00 – 19:00. The ticket rose from 100,000 to 150,000 VND per person over 1 m tall on 1 April, including VAT; children under 1 m enter free. The steps are steep and slippery after rain, so take care in wet weather.

Why Mua Cave is worth seeing:

  • The best viewpoint in Ninh Binh: a panorama over the Ngo Dong River, Tam Coc and karst peaks.
  • The stone dragon: a dragon sculpture winds along the ridge of Ngoa Long (Lying Dragon) Mountain.
  • Sunrise and sunset: open early and late, so you can avoid the midday heat.
  • Lotus season: from about late May to July the lotus pond at the foot of the mountain blooms.
  • Short and central: one to two hours, close to Tam Coc and Trang An.

Is Mua Cave Worth Visiting?

Yes, for the view, not for the cave. The cave at the bottom is small and shallow, but the summit view over Tam Coc is the image most people take home from Ninh Binh. If you are reasonably fit and can manage steep, uneven steps, it is one of the most rewarding hours you can spend in the area.

  • Best for: photographers, active travellers and anyone wanting a sunset view.
  • Skip if: you have knee problems, fear heights or visit in heavy rain.
  • Short on time: climb only to the main dragon viewpoint, then continue to Tam Coc.

History and Name of Mua Cave

“Múa” means “dance”. According to local tradition, King Tran Thai Tong, who set up a retreat in the Tam Coc area in the 13th century, came here to watch court dancers perform in the cave, which gave it its name. The Thai Vi Temple near Tam Coc, which honours the Tran kings, dates from the same period.

The mountain is called Ngoa Long, “Lying Dragon”, because its ridge looks like a resting dragon. The stone steps, the dragon sculpture and the small summit shrine were added in recent decades as the site was developed for visitors, together with lotus ponds and gardens at the foot. The area lies within the wider Trang An landscape, part of the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex.

What to See at Mua Cave

1. The stone stairway

About 486–500 stone steps zigzag up the mountain, lined with stone balustrades. They are steep and uneven; most people take 15–30 minutes to reach the top, with rest points along the way.

2. The dragon viewpoint

The ridge to the left at the top is crowned by a long stone dragon. From beside it you look straight down on the Ngo Dong River winding through the rice fields of Tam Coc, the classic Ninh Binh photo.

3. Quan Am statue and summit shrine

The right-hand peak has a small shrine and a white statue of Quan Am (the Goddess of Mercy), with views towards Trang An and Hoa Lu.

4. The cave itself

At the foot of the mountain, the cave that gave Hang Mua its name is small and shallow; it takes just a few minutes to see.

5. Lotus ponds and gardens

The ponds at the base bloom with pink lotus from about late May to July. Photographers come for portraits, and boardwalks cross the water.

Local Expert Tips for Mua Cave

These tips come from years of arranging Ninh Binh tours for international travellers.

  • Visit after a morning boat trip at Trang An so you know the landscape you are looking down on.
  • In summer, climb early; the stone heats up quickly.
  • Leave large bags in the car; you need both hands on some steep stretches.
  • For drone photos you need a permit; tripods are fine but the summit is cramped.
  • Stay nearby to catch sunrise; see where to stay in Ninh Binh.

Mua Cave vs Bich Dong Pagoda

Mua Cave Bich Dong Pagoda
Main draw Panoramic view Cliff-side pagodas and a cave
Effort About 500 steep steps A shorter climb
Ticket 150,000 VND Part of the Tam Coc–Bich Dong ticket
Best time Sunrise or sunset Morning

Our view: for the view, Mua Cave wins; for culture and fewer people, Bich Dong is the better choice. Many travellers do both by bike in one day.
