Tour Information & Itinerary
This private Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour 4 days (3 nights) covers North Vietnam’s three classic highlights from one Hanoi hotel: a guided day in the capital, a day trip to Hoa Lu and the river caves of Trang An or Tam Coc, and a Halong Bay day trip with about six hours on the water – no overnight cruise needed.
Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we tailor to your dates, pace and hotel choice. Halong Bay is visited as a day cruise from Hanoi, not an overnight cruise. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 and normally closes on Mondays and Fridays, and from June to October storms can suspend Halong Bay cruises at short notice.

Is 4 Days Enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay?
Yes – four days is enough to see the highlights of all three, provided you are happy to visit Halong Bay as a day trip. Ninh Binh is about 2 hours from Hanoi and Halong Bay about 2.5 hours, so both work as full-day excursions, and you sleep in the same Hanoi hotel every night.
Is a Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi worth it? For most short trips, yes. You spend about six hours on the bay with lunch on board, a cave visit and kayaking or a bamboo-boat ride. The trade-offs are a long day – about 12 hours door to door, including roughly 5 hours on the road – and no sunset or sunrise on the water. If those matter to you, choose our Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay Tour 5 Days with an overnight cruise instead.
Tour Highlights
1. Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Temple of Literature
See the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070, cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple on Hoan Kiem Lake, and walk the trading streets of the Hanoi Old Quarter – with a free morning on Day 4 to explore them again at your own pace.
2. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital and the River Caves of Trang An or Tam Coc
Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s capital in the late 10th century, keeps the temples of King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh. Then a rowing boat carries you through caves and under limestone peaks in Trang An or Tam Coc. Hoa Lu and Trang An belong to the Trang An Landscape Complex, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014.
3. Mua Cave Viewpoint (optional)
About 500 stone steps lead to the top of Mua Cave and one of Ninh Binh’s best views, over the Ngo Dong River and the rice fields of Tam Coc. We fit it in on Day 2 if time and energy allow.
4. Halong Bay Day Cruise
Halong Bay was first inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and since 2023 has been part of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage Site. On a day cruise you sail among its limestone islets for about six hours, with lunch served on board.
5. Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and Ti Top Island
Most day cruises follow the route that includes Sung Sot Cave, one of the largest caves in the bay; Luon Cave, where you kayak or ride a bamboo boat into an enclosed lagoon; and Ti Top Island, with a small beach and a viewpoint. The exact stops depend on the cruise and the route approved for the day.
Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Choose this tour if you:
- have four days in North Vietnam and want Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay in one trip;
- prefer one hotel for the whole stay rather than packing for a night on a boat;
- are travelling with children or anyone who is not keen on sleeping on board;
- like a private guide and driver with flexible timings.
Consider another option if you:
- want sunset, an evening and sunrise on Halong Bay – our 5-day tour with an overnight cruise is better;
- dislike long days – the Halong Bay day trip lasts about 12 hours from hotel to hotel;
- want the rice terraces of Sapa as well – see our Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Sapa – Halong Bay Tour 7 Days;
- are travelling between June and October and cannot be flexible – storms occasionally cancel cruises, in which case we arrange an alternative.
Accommodation Options
You stay three nights in the same Hanoi hotel, within walking distance of the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake. The day-cruise category is matched to your hotel level and confirmed when you book.
| Tier | Hanoi hotel (3 nights) | Halong Bay day cruise |
|---|---|---|
| Superior | 3-star boutique hotel in or near the Old Quarter | Standard day cruise with lunch on board |
| First Class | 4-star hotel around the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake | Premium day cruise with a set or buffet lunch |
| Deluxe | 5-star hotel in central Hanoi | Luxury day cruise, or a private boat on request |

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
These notes come from years of arranging North Vietnam tours for international travellers.
- Day cruise or overnight? A day cruise shows you the scenery, a cave and the kayaking; an overnight cruise adds sunset, a quiet evening and the bay at dawn. With only four days, the day trip keeps the rest of your trip relaxed.
- Bring your passport on Day 3: cruise companies ask for original passports at check-in, even for day cruises.
- Trang An or Tam Coc? Trang An is the longer boat trip with more caves and riverside temples; Tam Coc is shorter and runs through rice fields that turn gold in late May and early June.
- Mua Cave in the heat: from May to September the climb is hot and humid – bring water and a hat, or skip it and enjoy the boat ride.
- Kayaking: most day cruises offer either a kayak or a bamboo boat rowed by a local at Luon Cave; wear quick-drying clothes and keep your phone in a dry bag.
- Your last morning: hotel check-out is usually around midday; tell us your flight time and we time the airport transfer (about 45–60 minutes) around it.

FAQs about the Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay Tour 4 Days
1. Is 4 days enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay?
Yes, if you visit Halong Bay as a day trip. Four days gives you a day in Hanoi, a day in Ninh Binh and a Halong Bay day cruise, with a free morning before your flight. Add a day if you want an overnight cruise.
2. Is a Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi worth it?
For a short trip, yes. You get about six hours on the bay with lunch, a cave visit and kayaking or a bamboo-boat ride. The downsides are a long day of about 12 hours and no sunset or sunrise on the water.
3. How long is the Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi?
Pick-up is between 07:30 and 08:00 and you are back in Hanoi at about 19:30–20:00. That includes about 2.5 hours each way on the expressways and about six hours on the day cruise.
4. What is the difference between a Halong Bay day cruise and an overnight cruise?
A day cruise covers the main scenery, a cave and kayaking in about six hours. An overnight cruise adds a cabin, dinner, sunset and an early-morning visit, but needs an extra day – as in our 5-day tour.
5. What is included on the Halong Bay day cruise?
Lunch on board, the sightseeing fees for the stops on your route, and kayaking or a bamboo-boat ride. Drinks are usually extra.
6. Which caves and islands does the day cruise visit?
Most day cruises visit Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave for kayaking or a bamboo boat, and Ti Top Island. The exact route depends on the cruise and is confirmed when you book.
7. How far is Ninh Binh from Hanoi?
Tam Coc and Trang An are about 95–100 km south of Hanoi, roughly 2 hours by car on the expressway, so Ninh Binh is an easy full-day trip.
8. Should I choose Trang An or Tam Coc?
Both are rowing-boat trips through caves and limestone scenery. Trang An takes about 2–3 hours and passes more caves and temples; Tam Coc takes about 1.5–2 hours and is best when the rice turns gold in late May and early June.
9. Is Mua Cave included and how hard is the climb?
Mua Cave is an optional stop on Day 2. The climb is about 500 stone steps to the viewpoint; allow about an hour up and down.
10. Can you fly from Hanoi to Halong Bay?
No. There are no scheduled flights between Hanoi and Halong Bay, and the seaplane service stopped operating on 1 April 2026. The drive takes about 2.5 hours on the expressways.
11. Do I need my passport for the Halong Bay day cruise?
Yes. Cruise companies check original passports at the marina, including for day cruises, so bring yours on Day 3.
12. Can a Halong Bay day cruise be cancelled because of the weather?
Yes. Between June and October the authorities can suspend cruises when a storm approaches. If that happens, we offer an alternative day out from Hanoi.
13. Is this tour suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes. You stay in one hotel, the walking is easy and Mua Cave is optional. The longest day is the Halong Bay trip, so bring snacks and something to do in the car.
14. What is the best time to visit Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay?
March to May and September to November usually bring the most comfortable weather. Late May to early June is harvest time in Tam Coc, while June to October is the storm season on Halong Bay.
15. How do I book this 4-day tour and how much does it cost?
Send us your dates, group size and preferred hotel level through the tour inquiry form. Prices depend on season, hotel and cruise category and the number of travellers, and we reply with a tailored quote within 24 hours.
