Tour Information & Itinerary
This private Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 6 days (5 nights) links North Vietnam’s three great landscapes in one trip: a guided day in Hanoi, two nights in the mountains of Sapa with a walk to Cat Cat Village and a rice-terrace trek through the Muong Hoa Valley, and a night aboard a Halong Bay cruise. Your own guide, driver and airport transfers are included.
Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we tailor to your dates, pace and hotel choice. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026. In March 2026 Lao Cai province tightened its rules on adventure tourism: trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, and local guides, porters and trail helpers are being registered and checked by the communes. We run Sapa treks only with licensed, registered local guides.

Is 6 Days Enough for Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay?
Yes – six days is the shortest comfortable way to combine all three. Sapa is about 5–5.5 hours from Hanoi by road, so it needs two nights to be worthwhile, and Halong Bay deserves an overnight cruise rather than a rushed day trip. This plan gives each place its due: a full day in Hanoi, two nights in Sapa and one night on the bay.
What six days cannot do is slow down. Days 2 and 4 are mostly travel days in the morning or afternoon, and there is no homestay night in the valley. If you would like a gentler pace, a night in a Ta Van homestay or Ninh Binh as well, ask us to add a day.
Tour Highlights
1. Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Temple of Literature
Start in the capital with the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070, then cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple on Hoan Kiem Lake and lose yourself in the trading streets of the Hanoi Old Quarter.
2. Cat Cat Village
A short walk below town, Cat Cat Village is the easiest introduction to Black Hmong culture: wooden houses, a waterfall, water wheels and workshops where you can watch indigo dyeing and weaving.
3. Muong Hoa Valley Trek to Lao Chai and Ta Van
The heart of the tour is a guided walk of about 10–12 km through the terraced Muong Hoa Valley, from the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai to the Giay village of Ta Van, past a field of ancient carved boulders. Read more in our Lao Chai and Ta Van guide.
4. Fansipan, the Roof of Indochina (optional)
On a clear morning, the cable car lifts you over the valley to the summit area of Fansipan, at about 3,143 m the highest peak in Vietnam and Indochina. The ride is optional and the ticket is not included, so you decide on the day according to the weather.
5. Halong Bay Overnight Cruise
Halong Bay was first inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and, since 2023, forms part of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage Site. A night on board lets you see the karsts at sunset and sunrise, kayak or take a bamboo boat, and explore Sung Sot Cave.
Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Choose this tour if you:
- want both mountains and sea on your first trip to North Vietnam – rice terraces and hill-tribe villages, then limestone islands;
- enjoy walking and can manage a half-day trek on uneven village paths;
- prefer a private guide and driver who can adjust the pace, rather than a fixed group bus.
Consider another option if you:
- dislike long road days – Day 2 and Day 4 each include about 5–5.5 hours in the car, and Days 5–6 about 2.5 hours each way;
- have only five days or want a gentler first trip – our Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour 5 days has shorter drives;
- want to sleep in a village homestay or spend longer in the mountains – an extra night in Ta Van is a better fit;
- need guaranteed sailing on fixed dates in the storm season: Halong cruises can be suspended by the port authorities, mainly between June and October.
Accommodation Options
In Hanoi we choose hotels within walking distance of the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake; in Sapa, hotels in or near the centre of Sa Pa ward, ideally with mountain views. The cruise category is matched to your hotel level and confirmed when you book.
| Tier | Hanoi hotel (2 nights) | Sapa hotel (2 nights) | Halong Bay cruise (1 night) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superior | 3-star boutique hotel in or near the Old Quarter | 3-star hotel in the centre of Sa Pa ward | Cabin with private bathroom on a standard overnight cruise |
| First Class | 4-star hotel around the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake | 4-star hotel with valley or mountain views | Cabin with private bathroom and window or balcony on a 4-star cruise |
| Deluxe | 5-star hotel in central Hanoi | 5-star resort or hotel in Sa Pa ward | Balcony cabin on a 5-star cruise |

This 6-day programme is a starting point. Popular changes include:

- A homestay night in Ta Van: sleep in the valley after the trek and see the terraces at sunrise.
- Fansipan included: add the cable car ticket and a fixed time for the summit.
- Longer treks: add the Red Dao village of Ta Phin or a longer valley route – see our Sapa trekking guide.
- Lan Ha Bay instead of Halong: choose a quieter cruise route in Lan Ha Bay, near Cat Ba Island, or a two-night cruise.
- Add Ninh Binh: extend by a day for Tam Coc or Trang An.
- Hotel and cruise upgrades: move up a tier in Hanoi, Sapa, on the cruise or all three.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
These notes come from years of arranging North Vietnam tours for international travellers.
- Sapa is cool: at about 1,600 m, Sapa is much colder than Hanoi, especially from December to February, when nights can be close to freezing. Bring a warm jacket in any season and a rain jacket from May to September.
- Rice-terrace calendar: terraces fill with water in May and June, turn green in July and gold from late August to September; after the harvest the fields are bare until spring.
- Fansipan and the weather: the summit is often in cloud and tickets are not refunded if you see nothing, so decide on the morning itself – early cabins usually have the clearest views.
- Trekking shoes: the clay paths between Lao Chai and Ta Van become slippery after rain; shoes with real grip matter more than anything else you pack.
- Village etiquette: ask before photographing people, and buy handicrafts only if you want them – a polite “no, thank you” is fine.
- Halong Bay weather: the storm season runs roughly from June to October. When a storm warning is issued, the Quang Ninh authorities can suspend sailings at short notice – we then re-plan your days with you.
- Passport on Day 5: carry your original passport – cruise operators must register every passenger before boarding.
- Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. Hotels, cruises and roads to Sapa are busy around it, so book early.
- Money: carry Vietnamese dong in small notes for drinks, handicrafts and tips; there are no ATMs in the valley villages, and drinks on the cruise are usually charged separately.

Day by day itinerary
About This Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay Tour 6 Days
This 6-day North Vietnam itinerary combines a guided day in Hanoi, two nights in Sapa with a village walk and a Muong Hoa Valley trek, and a 2-day, 1-night Halong Bay cruise. Driving times are realistic: about 5–5.5 hours from Hanoi to Sapa and about 2.5 hours from Hanoi to Halong Bay on the expressways. It is a sample itinerary – we adjust it to your dates and pace.
Brief itinerary
- Day 1: Noi Bai Airport pick-up – Hanoi city tour (L)
- Day 2: Hanoi – Sapa by expressway – Cat Cat Village (B, L)
- Day 3: Sapa trek – Muong Hoa Valley, Lao Chai and Ta Van (B, L)
- Day 4: Sapa – optional Fansipan cable car – Hanoi (B, L)
- Day 5: Hanoi – Halong Bay overnight cruise (B, L, D)
- Day 6: Halong Bay – Sung Sot Cave – Hanoi / Noi Bai Airport (B, L)
B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner.
Day 1: Noi Bai Airport Pick-up – Hanoi City Tour
Meals: Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi
Morning: Your guide and driver meet you at Noi Bai International Airport with a name sign. The drive into central Hanoi takes about 45–60 minutes. Start with the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and home to Vietnam’s first national university.
Afternoon: After lunch at a local restaurant, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple, then explore the Old Quarter and Dong Xuan Market. Hotel check-in follows.
Evening: Free. Try street food or egg coffee near the lake, and get an early night – tomorrow starts early.
Note: if your flight lands in the afternoon, we adjust the order of the visits. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum opens on mornings except Monday and Friday and is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 – tell us in advance if it is a priority.
Day 2: Hanoi – Sapa by Expressway – Cat Cat Village
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa
Morning: Leave your hotel at about 07:30 for the drive of about 315–320 km to Sapa. Most of the way is on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, then a winding road climbs into the Hoang Lien Son range; with a rest stop, the journey takes about 5–5.5 hours by private car. Sapa – officially Sa Pa ward of Lao Cai province since the July 2025 merger with Yen Bai – sits at about 1,600 m, so it is much cooler than Hanoi.
Afternoon: Lunch on arrival, then check in. Walk down about 2–3 km to Cat Cat Village, a Black Hmong village with a waterfall, water wheels and indigo-dyeing and weaving workshops. Your driver collects you at the bottom, so there is no steep climb back up.
Evening: Stroll past the Sapa Stone Church in the town centre and try local dishes such as grilled skewers and hotpot – see our Sapa food guide.
Day 3: Sapa Trek – Muong Hoa Valley, Lao Chai and Ta Van
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa
Morning: Set off with your guide and a local trekking guide into the Muong Hoa Valley, Sapa’s classic landscape of rice terraces. Trails lead down through the fields to the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai, about 2–3 hours on foot.
Afternoon: Walk about 4 km along the Muong Hoa stream, past the ancient carved rocks, to the Giay village of Ta Van for lunch with a local family or at a village restaurant. In total you walk about 10–12 km in 4–6 hours; the car then takes you back to your hotel in about 20–30 minutes.
Evening: Free to relax in Sa Pa ward.
Note: Lao Chai and Ta Van now belong to Ta Van commune. In March 2026 Lao Cai province tightened its rules on adventure tourism: trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, and local guides, porters and trail helpers are being registered and checked by the communes. We run Sapa treks only with licensed, registered local guides. Prefer something gentler? We can shorten the trek or replace it with the Fansipan cable car (ticket not included). In heavy rain we choose a safer route.
Day 4: Sapa – Optional Fansipan Cable Car – Hanoi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi
Morning: Free time in Sapa. On a clear morning you can ride the cable car up Fansipan (optional, ticket not included). The cable car runs for about 6.3 km over the Muong Hoa Valley in about 15–20 minutes, then steps or a summit train lead to the peak marker; allow about 4–5 hours from your hotel. Alternatively, walk up Ham Rong Mountain for views over the town or browse the market.
Afternoon: Lunch in Sapa, then drive back to Hanoi on the expressway (about 5–5.5 hours), arriving in the early evening.
Evening: Free in the Old Quarter.
Day 5: Hanoi – Halong Bay Overnight Cruise
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Cabin on the cruise
Morning: Pick-up from your hotel between 07:30 and 08:00 for the drive of about 2.5 hours on the expressways to Tuan Chau International Marina in Ha Long. Bring your original passport – it is needed for cruise check-in.
Afternoon: Board your cruise around midday for a welcome drink, a safety briefing and lunch as the ship sails among the limestone islets of Halong Bay. In the afternoon, kayak or take a bamboo boat around a sheltered lagoon, and visit an island or beach such as Ti Top Island, depending on the route assigned to your cruise.
Evening: Watch the sunset from the sundeck, then enjoy dinner on board. Some cruises offer squid fishing after dinner.
Note: the exact order of stops depends on the cruise and the route approved by the Halong Bay authorities; it is confirmed when you book. Cruises can be rerouted or suspended in bad weather.
Day 6: Halong Bay – Sung Sot Cave – Hanoi / Noi Bai Airport
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (brunch on board)
Morning: Wake up to the bay with tea or coffee (many cruises also offer a short tai chi session). After a light breakfast, visit Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, one of the largest caves in Halong Bay, reached by a flight of steps. Back on board, join a Vietnamese spring-roll cooking demonstration and check out of your cabin.
Afternoon: Brunch as the ship returns to the marina, then disembark around midday. Your driver takes you back to your Hanoi hotel (about 2.5 hours) or straight to Noi Bai International Airport (about 2.5–3 hours). For an international flight, we recommend a departure after about 19:00. End of services.

FAQs about the Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay Tour 6 Days
1. Is 6 days enough for Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay?
Yes, if the days are planned well. Six days gives you a day in Hanoi, two nights in Sapa with a village walk and a valley trek, and a 2-day, 1-night Halong Bay cruise. Add a seventh day if you want a homestay night or Ninh Binh as well.
2. What is the best 6-day itinerary for Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay?
Day 1 Hanoi city tour, Day 2 drive to Sapa and Cat Cat Village, Day 3 Muong Hoa Valley trek, Day 4 back to Hanoi, Days 5–6 Halong Bay overnight cruise – the route of this tour. Doing Sapa first leaves the relaxing cruise for the end of your trip.
3. How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Sapa?
Sapa is about 315–320 km from Hanoi. By private car on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway it takes about 5–5.5 hours; the overnight train to Lao Cai takes about 7 hours 40 minutes, plus about 50 minutes by road up to Sapa.
4. How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay? Can you fly?
The drive from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Marina in Ha Long takes about 2.5 hours on the expressways. There are no scheduled flights between Hanoi and Halong Bay, and the seaplane service stopped operating on 1 April 2026.
5. Can I go directly from Sapa to Halong Bay?
It is possible by car, but it is a long day of about 7–8 hours on the road, roughly 470 km. This tour returns to Hanoi for a night in between, which breaks up the driving and lets you start the cruise rested.
6. How hard is the Sapa trek on this tour?
The Lao Chai – Ta Van walk is easy to moderate: about 10–12 km in 4–6 hours on village trails and terrace paths, mostly downhill or flat. Trails are slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip; we can shorten the walk on request.
7. Is the Fansipan cable car included in the Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay tour?
No, the Fansipan cable car is optional and the ticket is not included. You can ride it on the morning of Day 4 if the sky is clear, or instead of the trek on Day 3; allow about 4–5 hours from your Sapa hotel.
8. What is the best time for a Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay tour?
March to May and September to November usually bring the best mix of clear mountain views and calm seas. Sapa’s rice terraces are water-filled in May–June and golden from late August to September, while June to October is the storm season on Halong Bay.
9. Can a Halong Bay cruise be cancelled because of the weather?
Yes. The authorities can suspend sailings when a storm warning is issued, mainly between June and October. If that happens during your tour, we re-plan the affected days with you.
10. Can I take the night train to Sapa instead of driving?
Yes. The night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai takes about 7 hours 40 minutes, followed by about 50 minutes by road to Sapa. It replaces a night in a Hanoi hotel and changes the day plan, so tell us when you book.
11. Is the Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 6 days private?
Yes. You have your own English-speaking guide and private car on land; on Halong Bay you stay in a private cabin on a cruise shared with other guests. Small-group join-in departures can be arranged on request.
12. Is this 6-day tour suitable for children and seniors?
Yes, for reasonably active travellers. The long drives on Days 2 and 4 and the valley walk are the most tiring parts; we can shorten the trek, swap it for the cable car or add a night, so tell us about any mobility needs.
13. What is included in the 6-day Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay tour?
Included are airport transfers, 2 hotel nights in Hanoi, 2 in Sapa, 1 night on the cruise, private transport, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees in the itinerary and 5 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 1 dinner. Flights, visa fees, insurance, the Fansipan cable car, drinks and tips are not included.
14. Do I need a visa and passport for this tour?
Most visitors need a Vietnam e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, while citizens of some countries can enter visa-free for up to 45 days – check the current rules before you travel. Carry your original passport: it is required for hotel and cruise check-in.
15. What should I pack for 6 days in Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay?
Bring walking shoes with good grip, a warm layer and a rain jacket for Sapa, which is much cooler than Hanoi, plus sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and swimwear for the cruise. Pack clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples.
16. How much does the Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 6 days cost, and how do I book?
Prices depend on your dates, group size and hotel tier, so they are given on request. Send your travel dates through the Tour Inquiry form on this page and we will reply within 24 hours with a quote.
