Good to know (2026)
- In March 2026 Lao Cai province tightened its rules on adventure tourism: trekking and other adventure tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, and local guides, porters and trail helpers are being registered and checked by the communes. We run Sapa treks only with licensed, registered local guides. Very cheap informal treks are best avoided.
- June to October is storm season in the north, and Halong Bay cruises can be suspended at short notice by the authorities.
- The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 (normally closed on Mondays and Fridays).
- Tet (Lunar New Year) 2027 falls on 6 February. Prices rise and transport sells out around that date, so budget travellers should avoid it or book very early.
What is a budget tour in Vietnam?
A budget tour in Vietnam is about value, not cutting corners. You still get a reliable guide, safe transport, clean rooms and the key sights – but with 3-star boutique hotels, a standard cruise cabin and an efficient route instead of luxury extras.
Vietnam is one of the best-value destinations in Asia. Street food, local transport and entrance fees cost little, so a well-planned trip goes a long way. The difference between a good budget tour and a bad one is in the details: realistic driving times, licensed guides and cruises that are safe and properly run.

Hanoi, two nights in Sapa, overnight Halong Bay cruise |
At Superior level, the Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 6 days uses a 3-star boutique hotel in or near Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a 3-star hotel in central Sa Pa and a cabin with private bathroom on a standard overnight cruise – North Vietnam’s three great landscapes in under a week.
How to choose a budget tour in Vietnam
1. Very short on time or money
Start with day tours from Hanoi, such as the Hanoi – Hoa Lu – Tam Coc tour 1 day, or a food walk: our Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour starts from US$23 per person.
2. One week in the north
The 6-day Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay route at Superior level gives you mountains, a cruise and the capital without paying for extra nights.
3. Travelling solo or as two
Ask about small-group join-in departures: sharing the vehicle and guide is the simplest way to lower the cost per person.
4. Travelling as a group of friends
For four or more people, a private tour often costs little more per person than a group tour, because the car and guide are shared between you.
Best time for a budget tour in Vietnam
For the Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay route, March to May and September to November bring pleasant weather; late August to September is when Sapa’s rice turns golden. Shoulder months also tend to offer better hotel and cruise rates than the peak Christmas, New Year and Tet periods.

If the 6-day tour is too long or too short, these options keep costs under control:
- Halong Bay as a day trip – the Hanoi – Halong Bay tour 1 day skips the overnight cruise and returns to Hanoi the same evening; it makes a long day, but saves a night.
- Ninh Binh for a day – rowing boats among limestone peaks at Tam Coc or Trang An, often called Halong Bay on land; try the Hanoi – Hoa Lu – Trang An tour 1 day.
- A free day in Hanoi – walk the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the weekend walking street at little cost; see our Hanoi destination guide.
- Learn before you go – our Halong Bay guide explains cruise types so you can choose the right level.
What is included: private or small group?
Our budget tours run privately by default, with your own guide and driver, and small-group join-in departures can be arranged on some routes on request to reduce the price for solo travellers and couples. At Superior level a tour usually includes:
- 3-star boutique hotels and a standard cruise cabin with private bathroom
- Airport transfers and an air-conditioned vehicle with driver
- An English-speaking guide, sightseeing, entrance fees and boat trips in the itinerary
- Meals as listed in the itinerary
International flights and visas are not included. Day tours from Hanoi start from US$31 per person (Hanoi City Tour 1 Day) and US$38 (Hanoi – Hoa Lu – Tam Coc Tour 1 Day); multi-day prices depend on dates, group size and the hotel level you choose, and every quote lists exactly what is and is not included.
Tips from our local team: how to save money in Vietnam
- Travel in the shoulder season. Spring and autumn give the best mix of weather and value.
- Stay central. A 3-star hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter saves on taxis and lets you walk to most sights.
- Eat local. Street food and family-run restaurants are cheap, delicious and part of the experience.
- Use ride-hailing apps. Grab, Xanh SM and Be show the fare upfront and avoid taxi overcharging.
- Don’t over-economise on safety. Choose licensed operators for Sapa treks and Halong Bay cruises rather than the cheapest offer on the street.
- Fewer flights, smarter routes. Staying in one region saves on domestic flights.
