Cat Ba Island Travel Guide 2026: Things to Do & How to Get There

Cat Ba Island (Đảo Cát Bà) is the largest of the 367 islands of the Cat Ba Archipelago in Hai Phong, part of the UNESCO-listed Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago since 2023. It is famous for Cat Ba National Park, the endangered Cat Ba langur, Cannon Fort, sandy beaches and boat trips into Lan Ha Bay. From Hanoi it takes about 2.5–3.5 hours by road and ferry; the island itself is free to visit.

Status (checked October 2026): open as normal. Since 1 April 2026 a cross-region tourist boat route links Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay. Kayaking in Lan Ha Bay was suspended in November 2024 pending new rules, so confirm with your boat or cruise whether kayaking is currently offered; all boats stop during storm warnings.

Why Cat Ba Island is worth seeing:

  • Gateway to Lan Ha Bay, a quieter part of the World Heritage seascape with small beaches.
  • Cat Ba National Park, created in 1986, with forest trails and limestone peaks.
  • Cat Ba langur, one of the world’s rarest primates, found only here.
  • War history at Hospital Cave and Cannon Fort.
  • Beaches close to town (Cat Co 1, 2 and 3) and laid-back island life.
  • Cycling and hiking to villages such as Viet Hai.

Is Cat Ba Island Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially if you want to combine bay scenery with time on land. Cat Ba lets you sleep on an island, take a boat into Lan Ha Bay by day, hike in the national park and cycle to quiet villages, all at a slower pace than a standard cruise. The town itself is built-up and busy in summer, so stay a little outside it if you want calm.

  • Best for: active travellers, backpackers, families and anyone who wants 2–3 days around the bay.
  • Skip if: you only have one day; an overnight cruise is more efficient.
  • Short on time: choose a 2-day Lan Ha Bay cruise that departs from Hai Phong or Ha Long.

History of Cat Ba Island

Archaeological sites show people lived on Cat Ba thousands of years ago. In later centuries the sheltered coves were used by fishermen and traders. During the American War the island’s caves served as shelters, most famously Hospital Cave, a three-storey bomb-proof hospital used until 1975.

Cat Ba National Park was established in 1986, the first protected area in Vietnam to include a marine component. UNESCO designated the Cat Ba Archipelago a Biosphere Reserve in 2004, and in September 2023 the archipelago was added to Ha Long Bay’s World Heritage listing, creating the transboundary site “Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago” (65,650 ha). Since 1 July 2025 Cat Ba has been part of the Cat Hai Special Zone of an enlarged Hai Phong city.

What to See on Cat Ba Island

1. Lan Ha Bay

East and south of the island, Lan Ha Bay has around 400 limestone islands and many small beaches. Day boats leave from Ben Beo Pier near Cat Ba town.

2. Cat Ba National Park

The park covers about 109 km² of land plus inshore waters, with tropical limestone forest, caves and trails such as the climb to Ngu Lam peak. Go with a guide for longer hikes.

3. Cat Ba Langur

The golden-headed Cat Ba langur lives only on this archipelago; numbers fell to about 53 in 2000 and have slowly recovered to around 70. Sightings are rare and best arranged with conservation-minded guides.

4. Cannon Fort

On a 177 m hill near town, Cannon Fort keeps old gun emplacements and tunnels, with sweeping views over Cat Ba town and Lan Ha Bay. Go for sunset.

5. Hospital Cave

About 10 km north of Cat Ba town, this three-storey cave hospital was built to withstand bombing and served as a hospital and safe house until 1975.

6. Trung Trang Cave
