Quan Lan Island: Quiet Beaches of Bai Tu Long Bay

Quan Lan Island (Đảo Quan Lạn) is a long, low island in Bai Tu Long Bay, part of the Van Don Special Zone of Quang Ninh, about an hour by speedboat from Cai Rong Port. It is known for wide white-sand beaches such as Minh Chau and Son Hao, an old Syzygium forest and the 300-year-old Quan Lan Communal House. There is no entrance fee.

Status (checked October 2026): open to visitors as normal. Boats run several times a day from Cai Rong but stop in storms and strong monsoon winds; the island is busiest on Vietnamese summer weekends and quiet from November to March.

Why Quan Lan Island is worth seeing:

  • Long empty beaches: Minh Chau is often named the most beautiful beach in Bai Tu Long Bay.
  • Living history: the communal house is the only one in Vietnam that worships King Ly Anh Tong, founder of the Van Don trading port.
  • Village life: fishing hamlets, sand dunes and rice fields instead of resorts.
  • Short boat ride: closer and quicker to reach than Co To Island.
  • Summer festival: the Quan Lan boat-race festival in the sixth lunar month.

Is Quan Lan Island Worth Visiting?

Yes, for travellers who want a simple island escape with beaches and a little history. Quan Lan has no limestone towers like Halong Bay; instead it offers long, flat beaches, pine-like casuarina trees and quiet villages, and the boat ride crosses part of Bai Tu Long Bay.

  • Best for: families, couples and slow travellers who want swimming, cycling and seafood.
  • Skip if: you want nightlife, luxury resorts or dramatic karst scenery.
  • Short on time: see Bai Tu Long Bay on a day or overnight cruise instead.

History of Quan Lan Island

Quan Lan sits at the heart of the historic Van Don trading port, founded in 1149 under King Ly Anh Tong and for centuries Vietnam’s main gateway for foreign merchant ships. Sheltered anchorages on the island’s western side, such as Cai Lang, served traders from China and South-East Asia.

In 1288, during the third Mongol-Yuan invasion, General Tran Khanh Du destroyed the enemy supply fleet in the Van Don area, a victory that helped decide the war at Bach Dang. Islanders still remember it every summer in the Quan Lan Festival.

Under the 2025 reform of local government, the former communes of Quan Lan and Minh Chau became part of the Van Don Special Zone from 1 July 2025.

What to See at Quan Lan Island

1. Minh Chau Beach

On the north-east coast, Minh Chau is a long, gently shelving beach of fine white sand with clear water on calm days. It is the island’s best swimming beach and the most popular with day visitors in summer.

2. Son Hao Beach

Son Hao is quieter and wilder, with sand dunes and few facilities, ideal for a peaceful walk or picnic.

3. Quan Lan Beach

Closest to the main village, Quan Lan Beach has casuarina trees for shade and simple seafood restaurants, so it is convenient for sunset.

4. Quan Lan Communal House (Đình Quan Lạn)

First built in the 17th century and moved to its current site in the late 19th century, this wooden communal house stands on about 500 m² and has 32 main pillars and 26 smaller ones of hard, salt-resistant timber. It honours the village guardian spirit, King Ly Anh Tong and General Tran Khanh Du, and was ranked a national relic in 1990. Dress modestly when entering.

5. The Syzygium (Tram) Forest

Near Minh Chau, an old forest of tram trees (Syzygium) grows behind the beach, a rare coastal woodland that gives cool shade and good photos, especially in the soft afternoon light.

6. Villages, Dunes and Fishing Life

Cycling between the hamlets you pass rice fields, sand dunes, ponds and small harbours. In the evening you can watch fishing boats come in with squid and sea worms (sá sùng), a local delicacy.
