Vietnam Food Tours 2026: Taste Hanoi with a Local Foodie Guide

Our Vietnam food tours start where Vietnamese street food is at its best: the lanes of Hanoi's Old Quarter. On our Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour, a private English-speaking foodie guide leads you for 3–3.5 hours through 6–8 tastings – phở, bún chả, bánh cuốn, nem rán, bánh mì and egg coffee – at family-run stalls. It suits first-time visitors, couples and families, and we plan around vegetarian, halal-aware and allergy needs.

  • Durations: 3–3.5 hours, lunch or evening slot
  • Destinations: Hanoi Old Quarter, Dong Xuan Market area, Hoan Kiem Lake
  • Best for: food lovers, first-time visitors, couples and families
  • Best months: all year; October to April is most comfortable

See the tour below – from US$23 per person – or open the full guide to Vietnamese food tours.

Good to know (2026)

  • The 2026 MICHELIN Guide Vietnam, announced on 4 June 2026, lists 193 restaurants and eateries in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, including 72 Bib Gourmand picks – many of them noodle and street food shops.
  • The streets around Hoan Kiem Lake become a pedestrian zone from Friday evening to Sunday night, so weekend evening food walks in Hanoi are especially lively.
  • Tet (Lunar New Year) 2027 falls on 6 February. Many family-run stalls close for several days around it, so the food choice is smaller that week.

What Is a Vietnam Food Tour?

A Vietnam food tour is a guided walk or ride to the small, family-run places where locals actually eat: noodle shops that serve one dish all morning, grills on the pavement, market stalls and old coffee houses. A local guide orders for you, explains what is in each bowl and how to eat it, and keeps the pace relaxed so that six or eight tastings feel like a long, sociable meal rather than a race.

Hanoi is the natural place to start. The capital is home to phở and bún chả, and the Old Quarter packs dozens of specialist stalls into a few streets around Dong Xuan Market and Hoan Kiem Lake. Many of the shops have been run by the same families for decades and have no English menu – which is exactly why a guide helps.

Why Take a Food Tour in Hanoi?

  • Eat what locals eat: skip tourist menus and try dishes at the stalls that specialise in them.
  • Understand the food: learn how to dress a bowl of phở, dip bún chả and why egg coffee was invented.
  • Your diet planned in advance: vegetarian, halal-aware, gluten-free and allergy needs are arranged before the day.
  • A great first evening: the walk is the easiest way to get your bearings in the Old Quarter on arrival day.

What You Eat on a Hanoi Street Food Tour

The line-up changes with the season and with which stalls are open, but a typical walk includes 6–8 of these:

  • Phở: clear, slow-simmered beef or chicken broth with flat rice noodles.
  • Bún chả: grilled pork patties and belly with rice vermicelli, herbs and a sweet-sour dipping sauce.
  • Bánh cuốn: steamed rice rolls filled with minced pork and wood-ear mushroom.
  • Nem rán: crisp fried spring rolls, eaten with herbs and dipping sauce.
  • Bánh mì: the Vietnamese baguette sandwich with pâté, meat and pickles.
  • Egg coffee: strong Vietnamese coffee under a whipped egg-yolk foam – read the story in our Hanoi egg coffee guide.

How to Choose Your Food Tour

1. First day in Hanoi

Book the evening slot on your arrival day. You see the Old Quarter at its liveliest, get over jet lag with an easy walk, and learn what to order for the rest of your stay.

2. Hot months (May to September)

Choose the evening slot, about 17:30–21:00, when the heat eases. The lunch slot suits cooler months and travellers who want noodle dishes at their best.

3. Families and special diets

The walk is flat and easy, with a sit-down stop every 20–30 minutes. Tell us about children’s tastes and any diet in advance, and the guide will choose stalls to suit.

4. Food lovers on a longer trip

Each region cooks differently: bún bò Huế in Hue, mì Quảng in Da Nang, cao lầu in Hoi An, and broken rice and bánh xèo in Ho Chi Minh City. We can add street food experiences to a tailor-made itinerary – see our Hoi An food guide, Hue food guide and Saigon food guide for ideas.

Best Time for a Food Tour in Vietnam

  • October to April: the most comfortable walking weather in Hanoi; December to February can be cool and drizzly, perfect for hot noodle soup.
  • May to September: hot and humid with summer showers – book the evening slot.
  • Weekend evenings: the pedestrian streets around Hoan Kiem Lake add buskers and crowds.
  • Around Tet: fewer stalls open for several days around Lunar New Year (6 February 2027).

What’s Included, Private or Small Group

Included: a private English-speaking local foodie guide, 6–8 tastings equivalent to a full meal, an egg coffee, and pick-up and drop-off on foot from hotels in the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem area.

Private or small group: the tour runs privately with your own guide by default, daily on request, and a small group can be arranged. Other guide languages are available on request. For more ways to explore with your own guide, see our Vietnam private tours and Vietnam culture tours.

Tips from Our Local Team

Jimmy and our Hanoi team have arranged food walks for international travellers for many years. Their advice:

  • Come hungry, but pace yourself – the tastings add up to a full meal.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and light clothes; seating is often on low plastic stools.
  • Busy stalls with a fast turnover of fresh food are the best rule for street food anywhere in Vietnam.
  • Carry small notes in Vietnamese dong for extra drinks or snacks; QR bank payments are common but usually need a local banking app, and small stalls rarely take cards.
  • Ask your guide to write down the names of your favourite dishes so you can order them again on your own.
  • For more places to eat after the tour, read our Hanoi food and drinks guide.
