Why See Hanoi After Dark by Vespa?

Because Hanoi changes after sunset. Pavements fill with plastic stools, grills and families eating together.

On foot you see one district; by Vespa you cross the Old Quarter, the French Quarter, the Red River dyke and West Lake in a single night. Your driver handles the traffic, so you can look around, take photos and save your appetite for the food stops. If you prefer to stay on foot, choose the Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour instead.

What You’ll Eat and Drink

The line-up below is the usual menu. It adds up to a full dinner, so come hungry.

Dish What it is Vietnamese name
Lemon tea and sunflower seeds Iced tea with fresh lime, sipped on low stools while locals chat and crack seeds trà chanh, hạt hướng dương
Grilled pork with noodles Charcoal-grilled pork patties and belly in a sweet-sour broth with rice vermicelli and herbs bún chả
Crispy rice pancake Turmeric-yellow pancake filled with pork, prawns and bean sprouts, wrapped in rice paper with herbs bánh xèo

Tour Highlights

1. Bún Chả, Hanoi’s Most Famous Meal

Bún chả is grilled pork with rice noodles, fresh herbs and a sweet-sour dipping broth. It became world-famous in May 2016, when US President Barack Obama and chef Anthony Bourdain ate it together at Bún chả Hương Liên. It is the first proper food stop of the night.

2. The Opera House and the French Quarter

The Hanoi Opera House (map) was completed in 1911 and is lit up at night. Your guide stops here for photos with the Vespas and a short story about colonial-era Hanoi.

3. The Ceramic Mural and Chuong Duong Bridge

Riding along the Red River dyke, you pass the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural. It runs for about 4 km and was listed by Guinness World Records in 2010 as the world’s longest ceramic mosaic. You also pass Chuong Duong Bridge before stopping for bánh xèo and nem lụi.

4. Phở Beyond the Bowl on Ngũ Xã

The streets of Ngũ Xã, between Trúc Bạch Lake and West Lake, are the home of phở cuốn and fried phở. Here you try phở made into fresh rolls, crispy puffed squares and egg-fried cakes.

5. West Lake and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum at Night

You ride around the lakeshore and past Ba Dinh Square, where the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum stands floodlit after dark. It is a quiet, impressive photo stop, viewed from outside.

6. Egg Coffee and Live Music

Hanoi egg coffee was created in the 1940s and tastes like a warm coffee custard. After coffee, the night ends at a local bar with acoustic or jazz music in Vietnamese and English, with a free drink included. Guests are welcome to sing a song.

Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Ideal for: couples, friends and solo travellers who want food, sightseeing and nightlife in one evening; first-time visitors who would like a safe way to experience Hanoi traffic; and anyone with only one free night in the city.

Consider another option if:

  • You are not comfortable riding as a passenger in busy traffic – choose the Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour.
  • You are pregnant or have back or neck problems – a scooter ride is not recommended.
  • You want a quiet, early night – this tour ends around 22:00 at a lively bar.
  • You want daytime landmarks with time inside – the Hanoi City Tour 1 Day covers temples, museums and the mausoleum interior.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

  • Skip a big lunch: there are 6–8 dishes plus drinks, and portions are generous.
  • Wear closed shoes and trousers or a long skirt: it is easier and safer on the back of a scooter. Bring a light jacket from November to March, when evenings can drop to around 15 °C.
  • Rain: the tour runs in light rain and ponchos are provided; in a storm we may adjust the timing.
  • Weekend evenings: the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake close to traffic from Friday evening to Sunday night, so the route is adjusted.
  • Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027; many family-run eateries close for several days, so the menu changes.
  • Tipping: not required, but tips for drivers and the guide are appreciated.
