What Makes the Insider’s Hanoi Tour Different?

It shows two sides of Hanoi in one half day. Most city tours stay among the monuments. This one also rides into backstreets, a daily market and a farming village on the Red River, where Hanoi still feels rural. The Vespa makes it possible: the driver takes you through lanes too narrow for a car and covers about a dozen stops without you getting tired.

If you prefer to eat your way through the city at night, choose the Hanoi After Dark Street Food Tour by Vintage Vespa. For a full day of temples and museums by car, see the Hanoi City Tour 1 Day.

Tour Highlights

1. The Opera House and the French Quarter

The tour begins at the Hanoi Opera House (map), completed in 1911. Your guide explains how the French reshaped this part of Hanoi with wide boulevards and colonial villas.

2. Ba Dinh and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Area

From a viewpoint near the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum you see the political heart of Vietnam: the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly and government buildings. Your guide tells the story of modern Hanoi.

3. The B-52 Wreck in Huu Tiep Lake

After the lanes around the Botanical Garden, you reach a small neighbourhood lake where the wreck of a US B-52 bomber still rises from the water. It was shot down on the night of 27 December 1972, during the 12-day bombing campaign that Vietnam calls “Dien Bien Phu in the air”.

4. West Lake and the John McCain Memorial

You ride along West Lake, the largest lake in Hanoi, and stop on Thanh Nien Road at Truc Bach Lake. Here a memorial marks where US Navy pilot John McCain was shot down in 1967.

5. A Local Market and a Red River Village

At a busy local market you see what Hanoians buy every morning. The Vespas then cross to farmland on the Red River, past banana groves and vegetable plots. You visit a local family and kumquat gardens, which grow the little orange trees every Hanoi home displays at Tet.

6. Egg Coffee and Long Bien Bridge

After a break for Hanoi egg coffee, you ride across Long Bien Bridge, the steel bridge over the Red River that opened in 1902. Today it carries only trains, motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians. The tour ends with a Vietnamese meal at a local restaurant.

Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Ideal for: first-time visitors, history lovers, couples and friends who want to see Hanoi beyond the Old Quarter in half a day, and anyone curious about the American War sites in the city.

Consider another option if:

  • You are not comfortable riding as a passenger in Hanoi traffic – choose the Hanoi City Tour 1 Day by car.
  • You are pregnant or have back or neck problems – a scooter ride is not recommended.
  • You want to go inside museums and temples – this tour gives views and stories from outside, with short stops.
  • Food is your main interest – the Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour focuses on tastings.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

  • Choose the morning tour in summer: from May to September it is cooler before noon, and the market is at its busiest.
  • Wear closed shoes and long trousers or a long skirt: they are safer on a scooter and suitable for the village visit.
  • Bring a light jacket from November to March: mornings on the river can be cool.
  • Rain: the tour runs in light rain and ponchos are provided; in a storm we may change the time.
  • Cash: carry some small notes for snacks or a gift at the market.
  • Tipping: not required, but tips for drivers and the guide are appreciated.
