Tour Highlights
1. French Colonial Saigon: Post Office, Notre Dame and Independence Palace
Start in the heart of the city at the Saigon Central Post Office, still a working post office under its iron-and-glass vaulted hall, and the red-brick Notre Dame Cathedral across the square (built 1877–1880). Ride on to the gates of Independence Palace, where a tank crashed through on 30 April 1975 and ended the war.
2. Thich Quang Duc Monument
At this crossroads in the city centre, the monk Thích Quảng Đức burned himself to death on 11 June 1963 in protest against the Diem government’s treatment of Buddhists. The photo of that day went around the world; your guide tells the story beside the memorial.
3. Backstreets and Ho Thi Ky Flower Market
Leave the boulevards for narrow alleys where Saigon really lives, then walk through Ho Thi Ky, the city’s busiest flower market – a lane of florists, fresh blooms and snack stalls.
4. Cholon, Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Temple
Cholon, Saigon’s Chinatown, has traded since the 18th century. See the 1928–1930 Binh Tay Market and step into Thien Hau Temple, dedicated to the sea goddess who protects sailors, with giant incense coils hanging from the roof.
5. Thu Thiem Tunnel and the Saigon Skyline
Ride through the Thu Thiem Tunnel under the Saigon River and stop on the far bank for the classic photo of the skyline, from the Bitexco Financial Tower to the riverside towers of the old centre.
6. Lunch Like a Local
Finish at a local restaurant for lunch and a Vietnamese coffee before your driver takes you back to your hotel. Learn more about the dishes in our Saigon food guide.
Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Ideal for: first-time visitors, couples, families with older children and photographers who want the city’s highlights and its everyday life without sitting in a car or bus.
Consider another option if:
- You want to go inside Independence Palace and the War Remnants Museum – choose the Ho Chi Minh City Tour 1 Day.
- You are mainly here for the food – the Saigon After Dark Street Food Tour by Vintage Vespa or the Saigon Vintage Vespa Foodie Tour suit you better.
- You are pregnant or have back or neck problems – a scooter ride is not recommended.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
- Morning or afternoon? From March to May the morning is cooler; in the rainy season (May–November) showers usually come in the afternoon, so mornings are drier.
- Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered for Thien Hau Temple, and closed shoes for the Vespa.
- Bring small change in Vietnamese dong for flowers, drinks or incense.
- Holidays: around 30 April and 2 September the centre is busy and some roads close; Tết 2027 falls on 6 February 2027 and Cholon is at its most colourful in the week before.
- Addresses: since July 2025 Ho Chi Minh City uses wards instead of districts, but locals and taxis still say “District 1”.
