Tour Information & Itinerary
This private Ho Chi Minh City tour 1 day covers Saigon’s essential sights in about eight hours: Independence Palace, the War Remnants Museum, the French-era Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral, Thien Hau Temple and Binh Tay Market in Cholon, and Ben Thanh Market – with your own guide, driver, lunch and hotel pick-up included.
Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we tailor to your dates, pace and interests. Notre-Dame Cathedral is still under restoration – new crosses were lifted onto its towers in March 2026 and work continues beyond 2027 – so we view it from the outside only. Independence Palace now opens daily from 7:00 to 18:00 with no lunchtime closure.

Is One Day Enough for Ho Chi Minh City?
Yes – one well-planned day is enough to see the city’s headline sights. Because the palace, the museum, the cathedral, the post office and Ben Thanh Market all sit within about 1.5 km of each other in the old District 1 (now Saigon and Ben Thanh wards), you spend your time sightseeing rather than in traffic. Only Cholon, Saigon’s Chinatown, needs a 20–30-minute drive.
What one day cannot do is leave the city. The Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta each need most of a day on their own, so if you have two or three days in Ho Chi Minh City, pair this tour with one of our day trips below.
Tour Highlights
1. Independence Palace (Reunification Hall)
Designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu and completed in 1966, Independence Palace was the presidential palace of South Vietnam. On 30 April 1975 a tank crashed through its gates, ending the Vietnam War. Inside you walk through the 1960s state rooms, the war command bunker and the rooftop helipad. See it on Tripadvisor.
2. War Remnants Museum
Opened in September 1975, the War Remnants Museum documents the war and its human cost through photographs, Agent Orange exhibits and a yard of US-era tanks and aircraft. It is powerful and in places graphic, and most visitors need about 1.5 hours. Tripadvisor page.
3. Notre-Dame Cathedral and Saigon Central Post Office
Built between 1877 and 1880 from red bricks shipped from Toulouse, Notre-Dame Cathedral is under restoration, so we admire its facade from Paris Commune Square. Across the square, the Saigon Central Post Office (1886–1891) is still a working post office, with a vaulted iron-framed hall and hand-painted historic maps.
4. Cholon: Thien Hau Temple and Binh Tay Market
In Cholon, the city’s historic Chinatown, Thien Hau Temple honours the sea goddess Thien Hau with giant incense coils and ceramic roof figures (map). Nearby, Binh Tay Market, built in 1928–1930, is Cholon’s busiest wholesale market.
5. Ben Thanh Market
Built in 1912–1914 and crowned by its clock tower, Ben Thanh Market has nearly 1,500 stalls selling coffee, fabrics, souvenirs and street food. Prices are rarely displayed, so your guide will help you bargain politely. Tripadvisor page.
6. Nguyen Hue Walking Street (optional evening)
Pedestrianised in April 2015, Nguyen Hue Walking Street runs from the colonial City Hall to the Saigon River. It is at its liveliest after dark, an easy walk from most central hotels if you want to head out again after the tour.
Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Choose this tour if you:
- are visiting Ho Chi Minh City for the first time and want the main sights in one efficient day;
- want history and everyday life together – the palace and museum in the morning, temples and markets in the afternoon;
- prefer a private guide who can adjust the pace for children, older travellers or the heat;
- have only one or two days in the city before flying on or heading to the Mekong Delta.
Consider another option if you:
- are mainly interested in the Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta – each needs its own day trip;
- are travelling with young children – parts of the War Remnants Museum are graphic, and we can replace it with more time in Cholon;
- struggle in hot weather – midday temperatures are often above 30°C, although every stop has shade and the car is air-conditioned;
- want to go inside Notre-Dame Cathedral – during the restoration the interior is open only for Mass.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
These notes come from years of arranging Ho Chi Minh City tours for international travellers.
- Start early: we aim to be at Independence Palace soon after 8:00, before the heat and the tour-bus crowds.
- Dress for temples: light clothes are fine, but cover shoulders and knees for Thien Hau Temple and bring a hat and sunscreen.
- Prepare for the museum: the War Remnants Museum is moving and graphic in places – your guide will tell you which galleries to skip if you prefer.
- Carry small notes: Ben Thanh and Binh Tay stalls prefer cash; agree a price before you buy and bargain with a smile.
- Rainy season: from May to November, short heavy showers are common in the afternoon, so we keep indoor stops flexible.
- Tet holiday: many market stalls close for the first days of Lunar New Year (Tet 2027 falls on 6 February); the palace and museum usually stay open.

FAQs about the Ho Chi Minh City Tour 1 Day
1. How long is the Ho Chi Minh City tour 1 day?
About 8–9 hours. We usually pick you up at 08:00 and drop you back at your hotel at about 17:00, with lunch included.
2. What time does Independence Palace open, and does it close for lunch?
Independence Palace opens daily from 7:00 to 18:00, including public holidays, with no lunchtime closure. It may close for special state events, so we always check before your tour.
3. Can we go inside Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City?
Not for sightseeing at the moment. The cathedral has been under restoration since 2017 and the work will continue beyond 2027, so the interior opens only for Mass; on this tour you see the facade from Paris Commune Square.
4. Is the War Remnants Museum suitable for children?
Parts of the museum show graphic war photographs, including Agent Orange victims. Parents of young children often visit only the ground floor and the outdoor tank yard, or we replace the museum with more time in Cholon.
5. Are entrance fees included in this Ho Chi Minh City tour?
Yes. Entrance fees for Independence Palace and the War Remnants Museum are included. Notre-Dame Cathedral (exterior), the Central Post Office, Thien Hau Temple and the markets are free to enter.
6. Is lunch included, and can you cater for vegetarian or halal diets?
Lunch at a local restaurant is included. Tell us about vegetarian, vegan, halal or allergy needs when you book and we will choose a suitable restaurant.
7. What should I wear on a Ho Chi Minh City day tour?
Light, breathable clothes and comfortable shoes, plus a hat and sunscreen. Cover your shoulders and knees for Thien Hau Temple, and carry a light rain jacket from May to November.
8. What is the best time of year for a Ho Chi Minh City city tour?
December to April is the dry season and the most comfortable time. The tour runs all year: in the May–November wet season, showers usually arrive in the afternoon and pass within an hour or two.
9. Can we add the Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta on the same day?
Not comfortably – each is about 1.5–2 hours from the city centre. We can build a custom day with the Cu Chi Tunnels in the morning and the city highlights in the afternoon, or you can book our separate Mekong Delta and Cu Chi day tours.
10. Where does the tour pick up?
We pick up from hotels in central Ho Chi Minh City – the former District 1, now Saigon, Ben Thanh, Tan Dinh and Cau Ong Lanh wards – and nearby areas. Pick-up from other districts is available on request.
11. Is this Ho Chi Minh City tour private?
Yes. It is a private tour for your group only, with your own guide and car, so you can change the pace and the order of the stops.
12. Does the tour run during Tet (Lunar New Year)?
Yes, on request. Independence Palace and the museum usually stay open, but many market stalls close for the first days of Tet; in 2027 Tet falls on 6 February.
13. Is Nguyen Hue Walking Street included?
It is an optional evening stop on your own. Nguyen Hue Walking Street is within walking distance of most central hotels and is liveliest after dark; we can arrange a guide for the evening on request.
