Mekong Delta Day Trip from Saigon: Routes, Tips & Tours
A Mekong Delta day trip from Saigon takes you 70–110 km south-west of Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho, Ben Tre or Cai Be, about 1.5–2.5 hours each way. You cross the Tien River by boat, glide through coconut-palm canals by sampan, taste fruit and coconut candy, and are back in the city by evening. For a real floating market, add a night in Can Tho.
Status (checked October 2026): day trips run daily as normal. The new Rach Mieu 2 Bridge (open since 19 August 2025) has eased traffic between My Tho and Ben Tre. Since the mid-2025 provincial mergers, My Tho and Cai Be belong to Dong Thap province and Ben Tre to Vinh Long province. Expect afternoon showers from May to November.
Why a Mekong Delta day trip is worth it:
- River life within reach: the nearest delta towns are under two hours from District 1.
- Sampan canals: rowing boats slip through narrow water-coconut channels on the islands of the Tien River.
- Coconut country: watch coconut candy being made by hand in Ben Tre, the delta’s coconut heartland.
- Southern music: hear đờn ca tài tử, the folk music of the south inscribed by UNESCO in 2013, over a plate of tropical fruit.
- Easy to tailor: add cycling, a cooking class or a quieter canal on a private tour.

Is a Mekong Delta Day Trip Worth It?
Yes, if Saigon is your only base in the south. In one day you swap motorbike traffic for rivers, orchards and village lanes. The trade-off is that classic group tours follow a set circuit of honey, candy and music stops shared by many buses. A private or small-group day with cycling and quieter canals feels far more genuine.
- Best for: first-time visitors with limited time, families, and anyone wanting a taste of rural southern Vietnam.
- Skip if: you mainly want a big working floating market; for that, stay overnight in Can Tho.
- Short on time: choose My Tho and Ben Tre, the closest pair, and leave by 8:00 to beat traffic.
Understanding the Mekong Delta
The Mekong ends its long journey from the Tibetan Plateau in southern Vietnam, splitting into several branches before reaching the South China Sea. The Vietnamese call the region Cửu Long, the “Nine Dragons”, after its many mouths. The delta covers roughly 40,000 km² and produces more than half of Vietnam’s rice and much of its fruit and farmed fish.
Daily life still follows the water. Canals act as roads, houses face the river, and orchards are cut by ditches that fill and drain with the tides. This is what a day trip shows you: islands of fruit gardens, wooden sampans and workshops making products from coconuts.
The 2025 provincial mergers
Vietnam reorganised its provinces in mid-2025 under National Assembly Resolution 202/2025/QH15, with new provincial administrations from 1 July 2025. In the delta, Tien Giang merged into Dong Thap (so My Tho and Cai Be are now in Dong Thap), Ben Tre and Tra Vinh merged into Vinh Long, Soc Trang and Hau Giang joined Can Tho city, and Kien Giang merged into An Giang (home to Chau Doc). Town names on the tourist route have not changed, but you will see the new province names on signs and maps.

What to See on a Mekong Delta Day Trip
1. Vinh Trang Pagoda, My Tho
Completed in the mid-19th century and listed as a national relic in 1984, Vinh Trang Pagoda mixes Vietnamese, Chinese and European styles. Giant outdoor Buddha statues stand in the gardens. Entry is free; cover shoulders and knees.
2. The Tien River islands
From My Tho, boats cross the Tien River, the northern branch of the Mekong, to Thoi Son (Unicorn Island) and Phoenix Island (Con Phung). Phoenix Island was home to the Coconut Monk, Nguyen Thanh Nam (1909–1990), whose Coconut Religion grew here from 1963.
3. Sampan ride through a coconut canal
The highlight of most days: local rowers, usually in conical hats, take two to four passengers through narrow channels lined with water-coconut palms. The ride usually lasts 15–20 minutes.
4. Coconut candy workshops in Ben Tre
Ben Tre is Vietnam’s coconut heartland. Family workshops show how coconut milk is boiled with malt and sugar, then cut and wrapped by hand in rice paper.
5. Bee farm, fruit and traditional music
Garden stops serve honey tea with lime, seasonal fruit such as pomelo, rambutan or longan, and a short performance of đờn ca tài tử, the southern folk music recognised by UNESCO.
6. Cai Be Church and old houses
On the Cai Be route, the Romanesque Cai Be Church (built 1929–1932) overlooks the river, and the Dong Hoa Hiep area keeps wooden houses from the 19th century.
7. A Mekong lunch
Lunch is often elephant-ear fish (cá tai tượng) served crisp with rice paper and herbs, plus local dishes; see our Mekong Delta food guide.
How a Mekong Delta Day Trip Works, Step by Step
- 07:30–08:00: pick-up from your hotel in District 1 or nearby.
- 09:30–10:00: arrive in My Tho (or Cai Be about 30–60 minutes later); short pagoda or church visit.
- 10:30: boat across the Tien River to the islands; walk through orchards, honey tea and fruit with music.
- 11:30: sampan ride along a narrow canal, then a coconut candy workshop.
- 12:30: lunch in a garden restaurant; optional cycling on village lanes.
- 14:30–15:00: boat back to the mainland and drive to Saigon, arriving about 17:00–18:00.
Day Trip or Overnight?
A single day covers the river islands, canals and workshops. What it cannot do well is the floating market: the big Cai Rang market in Can Tho is busiest from around 5:00 to 7:00, roughly 170 km from Saigon. If a floating market is high on your list, plan two days and sleep in Can Tho or a homestay; see where to stay in the Mekong Delta.

Local Expert Tips for a Mekong Delta Day Trip
These tips come from years of arranging Saigon and Mekong Delta tours for international travellers.
- Go small or private: the same island stops feel very different with six people than with a full coach.
- Avoid Tet: around Lunar New Year, roads out of the city are jammed and many workshops close.
- Bring small notes: tipping sampan rowers (around 20,000–50,000 VND) is customary and appreciated.
- Protect from the sun: boats have little shade; bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
- Do not expect a floating market near Saigon: the Cai Be market has dwindled to a few boats.
- Combine wisely: keep the Cu Chi Tunnels for a separate morning; they lie in the opposite direction.
- Read our Mekong Delta travel tips for money, safety and etiquette.
Mekong Delta Day Trip vs Cu Chi Tunnels
| Feature | Mekong Delta day trip | Cu Chi Tunnels |

Frequently Asked Questions about Mekong Delta Day Trips
1. Can you do a Mekong Delta day trip from Saigon?
Yes. My Tho, Ben Tre and Cai Be are 70–110 km from Ho Chi Minh City, so a Mekong Delta day trip leaves around 7:30–8:00 and returns by about 17:00–18:00.
2. How far is the Mekong Delta from Saigon?
The nearest Mekong Delta town on the tourist route, My Tho, is about 70 km from Saigon; Ben Tre is about 85 km, Vinh Long about 100 km and Can Tho about 170 km.
3. Which is better for a Mekong Delta day trip: My Tho, Ben Tre or Cai Be?
My Tho and Ben Tre give the classic Mekong Delta day trip with islands, coconut workshops and sampan canals; Cai Be is a little further but quieter, with an old church and heritage houses.
4. Can I see a floating market on a Mekong Delta day trip?
Not a real one. The Cai Be market near Saigon has shrunk to a few boats, so to see an active Mekong Delta floating market you should stay overnight in Can Tho for Cai Rang at dawn.
5. How long is the drive for a Mekong Delta day trip?
Allow about 1.5–2 hours each way to My Tho or Ben Tre and 2–2.5 hours to Cai Be, depending on traffic leaving Ho Chi Minh City.
6. What does a typical Mekong Delta day trip include?
A typical Mekong Delta day trip includes a boat on the Tien River, a sampan ride along a palm-lined canal, a coconut candy workshop, a bee farm with honey tea, tropical fruit with traditional music and a local lunch.
7. Is a Mekong Delta day trip worth it?
Yes, if you have only one spare day in Saigon: a Mekong Delta day trip is the easiest way to see river life in the south, though group tours follow a set, fairly touristy circuit.
8. Is a Mekong Delta day trip too touristy?
Large group Mekong Delta day trips use the same island stops, so they can feel commercial; a private or small-group tour with cycling and quieter canals feels far more local.
9. What is the best time of year for a Mekong Delta day trip?
December to April is dry and sunny for a Mekong Delta day trip; August to November is the high-water season, greener but with afternoon showers.
10. Should I do a Mekong Delta day trip or stay overnight?
Choose a Mekong Delta day trip if time is short; stay overnight if you want the Cai Rang floating market at sunrise, a homestay and a slower pace.
11. Can I do a Mekong Delta day trip by public bus?
Yes. Buses leave Mien Tay bus station for My Tho and Ben Tre, but you will then need local boats and transport, so most travellers join a tour for a Mekong Delta day trip.
12. What should I wear on a Mekong Delta day trip?
Wear light clothes, a hat and comfortable shoes you do not mind getting muddy; cover shoulders and knees if your Mekong Delta day trip includes Vinh Trang Pagoda.
13. Is a Mekong Delta day trip suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes. A Mekong Delta day trip involves gentle boat rides and short walks; ask for life jackets for children and help stepping into the small sampans.
14. Can I combine Cu Chi Tunnels and a Mekong Delta day trip in one day?
It is possible but rushed, because the Cu Chi Tunnels lie north-west of Saigon and the Mekong Delta lies to the south-west; we recommend separate days.
15. Do I need cash on a Mekong Delta day trip?
Bring some Vietnamese dong for drinks, tips for boat rowers and small purchases such as coconut candy; card payment is limited on the islands.
16. Can a Mekong Delta day trip be private and customised?
Yes. A private Mekong Delta day trip can add cycling, a cooking class or a quieter canal; contact our team for a tailored plan.
