Mui Ne Fishing Village: Basket Boats & Sunrise Market
Mui Ne Fishing Village (Là ng chà i MÅ©i Né) is the working fishing harbour at the eastern end of Mui Ne ward, where hundreds of colourful boats anchor in the bay and round basket boats (thúng chai) ferry the night’s catch to a beach market at dawn. It is free to visit; go between about 5:00 and 7:00 for the busiest scenes.
Status (checked October 2026): active every day as normal and free to visit. The beach market is busiest from about 4:30–5:00 to 7:00, depending on the tide and the catch, and is quieter during rough weather. Since 1 July 2025 the village lies in Mui Ne ward, Lam Dong province (formerly Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan).
Why Mui Ne Fishing Village is worth seeing:
- Real working life: fishermen, traders and families at work, not a show for visitors.
- Basket boats: the round bamboo thúng chai bobbing between the larger boats.
- Dawn market: fish, squid, crabs and shellfish sold straight off the boats.
- Bay views: a famous viewpoint above the harbour with dozens of boats below.
- Free and central: on the way to or from the sand dunes.

Is Mui Ne Fishing Village Worth Visiting?
Yes, if you go at dawn. At sunrise the harbour is full of noise, colour and movement; by mid-morning it is quiet and the beach smells strongly of fish. It is a short, free stop that shows the side of Mui Ne that existed long before the resorts.
- Best for: photographers, curious travellers and anyone on a sunrise dune tour.
- Skip if: you are sensitive to strong fish smells or can only come in the middle of the day.
- Short on time: stop at the viewpoint above the harbour for 10 minutes on the way to the White Sand Dunes.
Background: Mui Ne, a Fishing Town Before a Resort
Long before kitesurfers and resorts, Mui Ne was a fishing settlement on a sheltered bay. In the 20th century it was a district town, and in 1982 it became a ward of Phan Thiet. The bay’s calm water and nearby fishing grounds made it one of the main fishing harbours of the former Binh Thuan coast, a province also known for its fish sauce.
Tourism arrived from the mid-1990s, when visitors came for the 1995 solar eclipse and resorts spread along the Ham Tien beach. The fishing community stayed at the eastern end of the bay. Since 1 July 2025, the old Mui Ne ward, Ham Tien ward and Thien Nghiep commune have been combined into the new Mui Ne ward of Lam Dong province.
The round basket boats, thúng chai, are woven from bamboo and sealed with resin or tar. They are cheap, light and stable, and fishermen use them to shuttle between the big boats anchored offshore and the beach.
What to See at Mui Ne Fishing Village
1. The harbour viewpoint
From the roadside lookout above the bay you see dozens of blue and red fishing boats at anchor, with basket boats moving between them. It is the classic photo of Mui Ne, best in the first hour after sunrise.

2. Basket boats coming ashore
Walk down to the beach to watch fishermen paddle thúng chai to the shore, spinning them with a single oar, and unload baskets of fish and squid.
3. The dawn seafood market
Traders and families sort and sell the catch on the sand from about 5:00 to 7:00: fish, squid, crabs, prawns, snails and clams. Prices are wholesale, and you can buy if you have somewhere to cook it.
4. Drying fish and daily life
Around the harbour you will see nets being mended, fish drying on racks and small cafés serving fishermen. Ask before photographing people up close.
5. Grilled seafood stalls
Some stalls near the beach grill fresh seafood for breakfast. For sit-down seafood restaurants, see our Mui Ne food guide.
