Vietnam Classic Tours

What is a classic Vietnam tour?

A classic Vietnam tour follows the time-tested routes that have made the country famous: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay and Sapa in the north, Hue and Hoi An in the centre, and Saigon, Mui Ne, Da Lat and the Mekong Delta in the south. Our 12 classic tours last from 1 to 7 days, are private with your own guide and driver, and include hotels or cruise cabins on multi-day trips.

  • Durations: 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 days (link two or three for a longer trip)
  • Destinations: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay, Sapa, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne, Da Lat, Nha Trang
  • Best for: first-time visitors, couples, families and active seniors
  • Best months: February–April overall; October–April in the north, February–August in the centre

Good to know (2026)

  • Halong Bay cruises can be suspended by the port authorities when a storm approaches, mainly from June to October; we rebook your cruise or switch to Ninh Binh if this happens.
  • Since 1 July 2025 Vietnam has 34 provinces after a nationwide merger. Hoi An and My Son now belong to Da Nang city, and Ninh Binh province has absorbed Ha Nam and Nam Dinh.
  • Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake walking street is closed to traffic from Friday evening to Sunday night, which makes weekend evenings in the Old Quarter especially lively.
  • Tet (Lunar New Year) 2027 falls on 6 February; book early for late January to mid-February.

What makes a Vietnam tour “classic”?

A classic itinerary is one that thousands of travellers have enjoyed before you, refined over time so that the driving is reasonable, the hotels are well placed and the main sights are seen at the right time of day. Think of a sunset on Halong Bay, a morning boat ride through the karsts of Ninh Binh, an evening among Hoi An’s lanterns and a day on the waterways of the Mekong Delta.

Classic tours suit travellers who want to see Vietnam’s best-known places properly rather than rush through a long list. They are a strong base for customising: add a beach, a homestay or a cooking class and the trip becomes your own.

Why choose a classic tour with Vietnam Tour Expert?

How to choose your classic Vietnam tour

1. Four or five days: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay

The Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour 5 days adds an overnight cruise; the 4-day version uses a day cruise and suits tighter schedules.

2. One week in the north: add Sapa

The Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 7 days brings in rice terraces and hill-tribe villages. Sapa is cooler than Hanoi, so pack a warm layer from November to March.

3. Heritage towns: central Vietnam

Hue, the Hai Van Pass and Hoi An are the centre’s classic trio. The Da Nang – Hue – Hoi An tour 7 days spends two nights in Hue; the 4- and 5-day tours focus on Hoi An with Ba Na Hills or My Son.

4. City, coast and highlands: the south

Start in Saigon, then choose the Ho Chi Minh tour 5 days for Cu Chi and the Mekong, or the 6- and 7-day loops through Mui Ne and Da Lat to Nha Trang.

5. Two weeks: the full north-to-south classic

Combine one tour from each region, linked by domestic flights of around 1.5 hours, for a 12–16 day journey. We plan the connections.

Best time for a classic Vietnam tour

February to April is the safest all-round choice. The north is at its best from October to April (cool and dry, cold in Sapa in winter). Central Vietnam is sunniest from February to August, with heavy rain and possible floods mainly in October and November. The south is driest from December to April. Read our Halong Bay cruise guide for cruise conditions month by month.

What’s included, and private vs small group

Classic multi-day tours usually include a private English-speaking guide, a private car or van with driver, airport transfers, hotels or a cruise cabin, entrance tickets and boat trips in the itinerary, and the meals listed. International flights, visas, insurance, drinks and tips are extra unless stated.

All our classic tours run privately. On Halong Bay you have your own cabin on a cruise shared with other guests. Some northern itineraries can also join a small-group departure on request; see our Vietnam small group tours for joined trips.

Tips from our local team

These tips come from years of arranging classic Vietnam tours for international travellers.

  • Travel north to south (or the reverse) in one line. Backtracking costs a day; an open-jaw flight saves it.
  • Spend a weekend evening in Hanoi. The walking street around Hoan Kiem Lake is at its best on Friday to Sunday nights.
  • Sleep on the bay. An overnight cruise is calmer than a day trip and lets you see sunrise on the water.
  • Keep one buffer day after Halong Bay during the storm season.
  • Plan Hue for the morning. The citadel is large and shade is limited; early starts are cooler.
  • Leave room for food. Pho in Hanoi, bun bo in Hue and cao lau in Hoi An are part of the classic route too.

Our classic tours are private, with your own guide, driver and vehicle; on Halong Bay you have a private cabin on a shared cruise. Joined departures are listed under Vietnam small group tours.
