Good to know (2026)
- The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 and normally closes on Mondays and Fridays; our Hanoi city tour visits other sights on those days.
- Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake walking street is closed to traffic from Friday evening to Sunday night, with street performers and families out in force.
- Since 1 July 2025 Vietnam has 34 provinces: Hoi An and My Son now belong to Da Nang city, and Ha Giang is part of Tuyen Quang province.
- Tet (Lunar New Year) 2027 falls on 6 February. It is the most important festival of the year; expect decorations and flower markets beforehand and some closures for several days.
Why choose a culture tour in Vietnam?
Vietnam’s culture is a layered mix of Chinese-influenced Confucian and Buddhist traditions, the legacy of the Nguyen dynasty in Hue, the Cham kingdoms of the centre, French colonial architecture, 54 officially recognised ethnic groups and a food culture that changes from region to region. A good culture tour connects these layers so that each temple, market or dish makes sense.
With a private local guide you can ask about anything: why families keep ancestor altars, how the Cao Dai faith blends religions, what the Temple of Literature meant to scholars, or how Hmong and Dao families farm the terraces around Sapa.
- Heritage: imperial Hue, the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, Cham sculpture in Da Nang.
- Living culture: markets, pagodas, village homes and craft workshops.
- Food: street food in Hanoi, Hue specialities, Mekong Delta produce.
- Faith: Buddhist pagodas, Confucian temples and the Cao Dai Holy See.

How to choose your Vietnam culture tour
1. One day in Hanoi: history and food
Combine the Hanoi City Tour 1 Day (Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son Temple, the Old Quarter) with the Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour in the evening. Read our Temple of Literature guide before you go.
2. Imperial heritage: Hue
The Hue City Tour 1 Day covers the UNESCO-listed Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda and two royal tombs; the Da Nang – Hue – Hoi An tour 7 days adds Hoi An’s merchant houses and the Hai Van Pass.
3. Ethnic minority villages: Sapa
The Hanoi – Sapa tour 3 days walks through Cat Cat and the Muong Hoa Valley villages with a local trekking guide.
4. Faith and history in the south
The Ho Chi Minh – Cao Dai Temple – Cu Chi Tunnels tour times your visit for the 12:00 ceremony at the Cao Dai Holy See, and the Mekong Delta day shows river life, orchards and pagodas.
5. Remote cultures by motorbike
Our joined motorbike tours cross Ha Giang and the northwest, home to Hmong, Dao, Tay and other communities, for confident riders with the right licence.
Best time for a culture tour in Vietnam
Culture tours work all year because many sights are indoors or shaded. February to April is pleasant across the country. The weeks before Tet bring flower markets and preparations, although some sights and family restaurants close for several days around the holiday itself. In Hue and Hoi An, October and November are the wettest months; in the south, May to November brings short tropical downpours. See our Hue travel tips for local seasons.
What’s included, and private vs small group
Our private culture tours include your own English-speaking guide, a private car with driver, hotel pick-up, entrance tickets and the meals listed (day tours usually include lunch). The Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour is on foot with 6–8 tastings. The four motorbike tours are joined small-group departures of 6–10 riders with a guide, mechanic, bike, fuel, meals and permits. Drinks, tips and personal expenses are extra.
Tips from our local team
These tips come from years of arranging culture tours in Vietnam for international travellers.
- Dress respectfully. Cover shoulders and knees at pagodas, temples, the Imperial City and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area.
- Remove shoes when you enter a home or the inner hall of some pagodas; follow your guide’s lead.
- Ask before photographing people, especially in Sapa and Ha Giang villages.
- Keep small notes for donations at temples and small purchases at markets.
- Try the regional food. Bun cha in Hanoi, bun bo Hue in Hue and cao lau in Hoi An tell the story of each region.
- Plan around closures. Check Monday and Friday closures at the mausoleum and holiday hours around Tet.
