Is One Day Enough for Hue?

For the highlights, yes. One well-planned day covers the Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda and two of the seven royal tombs, which is what most visitors come for. Because the sites are close together, you spend little time in the car and can take the Imperial City at an unhurried pace.

What one day cannot cover is everything: Hue has more tombs, garden houses, the royal arena and the evening walking street by the river. With a second day you could add Tu Duc or Gia Long, a cycling trip to Thanh Toan bridge or a slow afternoon on the Perfume River – see where to stay in Hue if you decide to stay longer.

Which royal tombs should you choose?

Tomb Built Distance from centre Why go
Khai Dinh (included) 1920–1931 About 10 km Hillside setting, European-influenced concrete architecture, glass-and-porcelain mosaics
Minh Mang (standard choice) 1840–1843 About 12 km Grand symmetrical layout, lotus lakes, classic Nguyen architecture
Tu Duc (alternative) 1864–1867 About 6 km Romantic lake and pavilions where the emperor wrote poetry; closest to the city

Tour Highlights

1. Hue Imperial City

The Hue Imperial City was the seat of the Nguyen emperors, who ruled Vietnam from Hue between 1802 and 1945. Enter through Ngo Mon Gate to see Thai Hoa Palace, the Nine Dynastic Urns and the restored halls of the inner court; it is the centrepiece of the Complex of Hue Monuments, inscribed by UNESCO in 1993 (Tripadvisor · Wikipedia).

2. Thien Mu Pagoda

Thien Mu Pagoda, about 5 km upriver from the Citadel, was founded in 1601. Its seven-storey, 21-metre Phuoc Duyen tower, added by Emperor Thieu Tri in 1844, has become a symbol of Hue (Tripadvisor · Wikipedia).

3. Optional Dragon-Boat Ride on the Perfume River

From the pagoda landing you can return towards the city on a brightly painted dragon boat, watching riverside life along the Perfume River – a relaxing break between the morning and afternoon visits.

4. Tomb of Minh Mang or Tomb of Tu Duc

The Tomb of Minh Mang (Tripadvisor) is famed for its perfectly symmetrical layout among pine hills and lotus lakes, while the lakeside Tomb of Tu Duc served as the emperor’s retreat for poetry and boating during his lifetime (Tripadvisor · Wikipedia).

5. Tomb of Khai Dinh

The Tomb of Khai Dinh, built from 1920 to 1931 on Chau Chu mountain, blends Vietnamese and European styles; inside Thien Dinh Palace the walls glitter with glass and porcelain decoration (Tripadvisor · Wikipedia).

6. Nha Nhac Court Music and Dong Ba Market (Optional)

Nha nhac, Vietnamese court music, is on UNESCO’s Representative List of intangible heritage; short performances are staged at the royal theatre inside the Imperial City, and we fit one in when the schedule allows. On the way back, Dong Ba Market is Hue’s largest market for local snacks, conical hats and dried goods (Tripadvisor).

Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Choose this tour if you:

  • are staying in Hue and want to see the main sights in one day;
  • enjoy history, architecture and stories of the Nguyen emperors;
  • prefer short drives and plenty of time at each site;
  • are travelling with children or older relatives and want a private car between stops.

Consider another option if you:

  • are based in Da Nang or Hoi An and dislike long days – the drive adds about 5–6 hours in total, so a night in Hue is better;
  • want beaches or nature rather than monuments – try the Da Nang City Tour 1 Day;
  • are visiting in October or November with no flexibility – heavy rain and floods can disrupt plans;
  • want Hue as part of a longer trip – the Da Nang – Hoi An Tour 5 Days includes Hue via the Hai Van Pass.

Customise This Tour

This one-day programme is a starting point. Popular changes include:

  • Pick-up from Da Nang or Hoi An: drive through the Hai Van tunnel – about 2.5 hours each way from Da Nang and about 3 hours from Hoi An – or take the scenic Hai Van Pass one way.
  • Three tombs: visit Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh in one day, skipping the boat ride and market.
  • Dragon-boat ride: add the Perfume River cruise between Thien Mu Pagoda and the city.
  • Food focus: swap the market stop for a Hue street-food tasting – see what to eat in Hue.
  • Stay longer: turn it into a two-day Hue visit, or combine with Hoi An as in the Da Nang – Hoi An Tour 4 Days.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

These notes come from years of arranging Hue tours for international travellers.

  • Start early: the Imperial City is cooler and quieter in the first hours after opening, especially from May to August.
  • Dress code: cover shoulders and knees for Thien Mu Pagoda and the temples inside the tombs.
  • Heat and rain: bring a hat, sunscreen and water in summer, and a light rain jacket from September to December.
  • Khai Dinh steps: the tomb rises up a long flight of steps – take it slowly; the view from the top is worth it.
  • Restoration works: expect fenced areas around Can Chanh Palace until about 2028–2029; the rest of the Imperial City is open as normal.
  • Holidays: Hue is busiest on Vietnamese holidays and during festival periods; Tet 2027 falls on 6 February.

FAQs about the Hue City Tour 1 Day
1. How long does the Hue City Tour 1 Day take?

About nine hours: pick-up at your hotel in central Hue at about 8:00 and drop-off at about 17:00. Distances are short, so most of the day is spent sightseeing rather than driving.

2. What can you see in Hue in one day?

In one day you can see the Hue Imperial City, Thien Mu Pagoda and two of the royal tombs, with lunch of Hue specialities. A third tomb, a dragon-boat ride or Dong Ba Market can be added if you keep a brisk pace.

3. Which royal tombs in Hue are best to visit?

Our standard pair is Khai Dinh, for its hillside setting and glass-and-porcelain mosaics, and Minh Mang, for its grand symmetrical layout. Tu Duc, with its lake and pavilions, is the romantic alternative and the closest of the three to the city.

4. Can I visit three royal tombs in one day?

Yes, but the day becomes rushed. To fit Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh, we usually drop the dragon-boat ride and the market and keep lunch short.

5. What are the opening hours of the Hue Imperial City?

From 16 March to 15 October tickets are sold from 6:30 to 17:30; from 16 October to 15 March, from 7:00 to 17:00. The royal tombs follow similar hours, and the site opens daily.

6. Is the Hue Imperial City fully restored?

No. Many buildings were destroyed in 1947 and during the 1968 battle of Hue, and restoration is ongoing. Can Chanh Palace is being rebuilt, with completion planned for about 2028–2029, so part of the inner area is fenced off.

7. Can I do this Hue city tour from Da Nang or Hoi An?

Yes. Through the Hai Van tunnel the drive takes about 2.5 hours each way from Da Nang and about 3 hours from Hoi An, making a 12–13-hour day. If you can, stay a night in Hue for a more relaxed visit.

8. Is the dragon-boat ride on the Perfume River worth it?

It is a relaxing, optional way to travel between Thien Mu Pagoda and the city, with views of riverside life. It is not included as standard; tell us if you would like it.

9. What is Nha nhac, and can I see a performance in Hue?

Nha nhac is Vietnamese royal court music, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2003 and inscribed on its Representative List of intangible heritage in 2008. Short performances are staged at the royal theatre inside the Imperial City, and we can fit one in when the schedule allows.

10. What should I wear on a Hue city tour?

Cover your shoulders and knees for Thien Mu Pagoda and the temples within the tombs, and wear comfortable shoes: the Imperial City is large and Khai Dinh Tomb has a long flight of steps. Bring a hat and water.

11. When is the best time to visit Hue?

February to April is usually the most comfortable. May to August is hot, and September to December is the rainy season, with floods most likely in October and November.

12. What food should I try in Hue?

Try bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), banh khoai (crispy rice pancake), banh beo (small steamed rice cakes) and com hen (rice with baby clams). Lunch on this tour features local dishes like these.

13. Is the Hue City Tour 1 Day suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. The car takes you between all the sites, and you can rest in shaded areas. The main effort is walking in the Imperial City and climbing the steps at Khai Dinh Tomb, which can be taken slowly.
