Is 6 Days Enough for the Ha Giang Loop by Motorbike?

Yes – six days is enough for a full loop from Hanoi that takes in the best of the Ha Giang Loop and two of the north’s finest lakes. The classic Ha Giang Loop is usually ridden in three or four days from Ha Giang city. This tour rides its most spectacular section – Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Dong Van, the Ma Pi Leng Pass and Meo Vac – then carries on east through Bao Lac to Ba Be Lake instead of turning back, with Thac Ba Lake on the way up from Hanoi.

The trade-off is long days in the saddle: you cover about 1,010 km, and Day 6 alone is about 240 km. There is no rest day, so this group motorbike tour suits riders who enjoy full riding days. If you want more time on the plateau, ask us about a private departure with an extra night.

Highlights of This Ha Giang Loop Motorcycle Tour

1. Thac Ba Lake by Boat

Thac Ba Lake formed behind a hydropower dam built between 1964 and 1971 and is one of Vietnam’s three largest man-made lakes, with about 1,331 forested islands. You explore it by boat on Day 1 and sleep in the Dao village of Vu Linh on its shore.

2. Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the Dong Van Karst Plateau

The Dong Van Karst Plateau became Vietnam’s first UNESCO Global Geopark in 2010. It covers about 2,356 km² of limestone mountains, where Hmong and other communities grow maize between the rocks. The road onto the plateau climbs through Quan Ba Heaven Gate.

3. Ma Pi Leng Pass and the Nho Que River

The Ma Pi Leng Pass runs for about 20 km between Dong Van and Meo Vac, with its crest at about 1,500 m, high above the green Nho Que River in the Tu San canyon. It was listed as a national scenic landscape in 2009.

4. Dong Van Old Quarter

After the ride on Day 3 you have time to stroll the Dong Van Old Quarter, a short street of old houses with clay-brick walls and tiled roofs below the limestone peaks.

5. Off-road Riding from Bao Lac to Ba Be

Day 5 is the off-road day: narrow, bumpy tracks past terraced rice fields and river crossings, ending with lunch in a Tay village. It is the part of the trip riders talk about most – and the reason this tour is graded challenging.

6. Ba Be Lake

Ba Be Lake, in Ba Be National Park, is Vietnam’s largest natural lake: about 8 km long and more than 650 hectares, ringed by forested limestone mountains. It became a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2011.

Who This Group Motorbike Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Choose this tour if you:

  • are a confident rider who wants real mountain roads and some off-road riding, not just a scenic ride on tarmac;
  • want to ride the Ha Giang Loop and see beyond it, with two lakes and the quieter Bao Lac – Ba Be section;
  • are travelling alone or as a couple and like the idea of a small group motorbike tour of 6–10 riders;
  • enjoy simple village homestays and local food.

Consider another option if you:

  • have never ridden a manual or semi-automatic motorbike – this tour is graded challenging;
  • do not hold a motorcycle licence and a 1968-convention International Driving Permit;
  • prefer comfortable hotels every night or dislike long days on the road – our Hanoi – Sapa Tour 3 Days travels by private car;
  • would rather ride the mountain passes and valleys of the north-west – see our Northwest Loop Vietnam Motorbike Tour 6 Days;
  • can only travel at the height of the rainy season and want guaranteed dry roads – heavy rain between about May and September can cause landslides and detours.

Accommodation on the Ha Giang Motorbike Tour

Accommodation is simple and local: family homestays in ethnic minority villages and small hotels in the mountain towns. Rooms are twin share; if you book at the single-room rate we arrange a single room where the hotel or homestay has one.

Night Place Type
1 Vu Linh, Thac Ba Lake Dao family homestay
2 Tay village near Ha Giang Tay homestay (stilt house)
3 Dong Van Local hotel
4 Bao Lac (Cao Bang) Local hotel
5 Near Ba Be Lake Tay village homestay

Motorbikes, Licence and Safety on This Guided Motorcycle Tour

You ride a Honda CRF250L or CRF300L – the two bikes our group prices are based on – or a lighter Honda XR150L, prepared for mountain roads, with fuel included; bigger bikes can be arranged at extra cost. Helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads and rain gear are provided, and the mechanic rides with the group. Helmets are compulsory in Vietnam. Vietnamese law requires foreign riders to carry their home-country motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention – Vietnam does not accept 1949-convention permits – so check your documents and your insurance cover before booking.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

These notes come from years of arranging North Vietnam tours for international travellers.

  • Licence first: get your 1968-convention IDP before you leave home – it cannot be issued in Vietnam to visitors – and bring your original motorcycle licence and passport.
  • Insurance: read the small print. Many policies only cover motorbike riding if you are licensed for the engine size and wear a helmet; check with your insurer.
  • Cold on the plateau: from December to February the Dong Van Plateau can be close to freezing in the early morning, with thick fog on the passes. Bring thermal layers and full-finger winter gloves.
  • Rainy season: from about May to September afternoon downpours are common and landslides can close roads for hours; your guide may reroute or shorten the day for safety.
  • Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. The February departure starts just after the holiday, when villages are still festive but some shops and restaurants may keep shorter hours.
  • Cash: carry Vietnamese dong in small notes for drinks, snacks and tips; ATMs are scarce once you leave the towns.
  • Village etiquette: ask before photographing people, dress modestly in homestays and take your shoes off before entering a stilt house.

About This Ha Giang Loop Motorbike Tour 6 Days

This 6-day, 5-night joined group motorbike tour loops for about 1,010 km from Hanoi through the mountains of the far north: Thac Ba Lake, the Dong Van Karst Plateau and the Ma Pi Leng Pass on the Ha Giang Loop, Bao Lac in Cao Bang and Ba Be Lake. Daily distances run from about 110 km to 240 km on a mix of sealed mountain roads and off-road tracks, with three nights in village homestays and two in local hotels. It runs on fixed 2027 departures for a small group of 6–10 riders, from US$960 per rider; on any day your guide may adjust the route for weather and road conditions.

Brief itinerary

  • Day 1: Hanoi – Thac Ba Lake, about 180 km (L, D)
  • Day 2: Thac Ba Lake – Ha Giang, about 170 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 3: Ha Giang – Dong Van Karst Plateau, about 160 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 4: Dong Van – Meo Vac – Bao Lac, about 110 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 5: Bao Lac – Ba Be Lake, about 150 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 6: Ba Be Lake – Hanoi, about 240 km (B, L)

B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner.

Day 1: Hanoi – Thac Ba Lake (about 180 km)

Riding: about 180 km · Meals: Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Dao family homestay in Vu Linh, Thac Ba Lake

Morning: We pick you up from your Hanoi hotel, fit your riding gear and run through the bike and safety briefing, then set off at about 08:00 from the north-east side of the city. Instead of the busy highways we take a small, winding road along the Red River, through a patchwork of paddy fields, tree-lined farm roads and quiet villages where daily life goes on at its own pace.

Afternoon: Lunch at a local restaurant in Doan Hung. After lunch the roads get more interesting, with the first easy off-road sections and wider views of the hills. We arrive in Vu Linh, a village of the Dao people on the shore of Thac Ba Lake, and head out by boat among its islands – the highlight of the first day. The lake was created by the Thac Ba hydropower dam, built between 1964 and 1971, and is one of Vietnam’s three largest man-made lakes, with about 1,331 forested islands.

Evening: Dinner and overnight with a Dao family in their homestay.

Note: Thac Ba Lake was in Yen Bai province, which merged into Lao Cai province on 1 July 2025.

Day 2: Thac Ba Lake – Ha Giang (about 170 km)

Riding: about 170 km · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Tay village homestay near Ha Giang

Morning: After breakfast and a farewell to your hosts, we ride off at about 08:30 along the lake shore on a small road lined with palm trees, with mountains on the horizon. Fun off-road tracks then lead through several pretty villages.

Afternoon: We join National Road 2 and head north to Ha Giang. In Ha Giang town we stop to arrange the border-area permit for the Dong Van Plateau and the frontier districts you ride through over the next days – the paperwork is handled by your guide and included in the tour.

Evening: Dinner and overnight in a Tay village homestay, typically a wooden stilt house, just outside town.

Note: Ha Giang province merged into Tuyen Quang province on 1 July 2025; the name Ha Giang is still used for the region and its famous loop.

Day 3: Ha Giang – Dong Van Karst Plateau (about 160 km)

Riding: about 160 km · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel in Dong Van

Morning: Today is the highlight of the tour. Most of the ride is on small, steep mountain roads – challenging, but spectacular. The road climbs through Quan Ba Heaven Gate onto the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, recognised by UNESCO as a Global Geopark in 2010, where limestone covers most of the land and the hill-tribe communities farm maize in pockets of soil between the rocks.

Afternoon: Ride some of the most beautiful passes in Vietnam, including the bends of the Tham Ma slope and the Ma Pi Leng Pass, with stops wherever the views demand a photo. Your guide introduces you to the cultures of the Hmong and other communities who make a living on this rocky land.

Evening: Check in to your hotel in Dong Van, then walk the Dong Van Old Quarter, a street of old houses with clay-brick walls and tiled roofs at the foot of the mountains.

Day 4: Dong Van – Meo Vac – Bao Lac (about 110 km)

Riding: about 110 km · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel in Bao Lac

Morning: After breakfast the road keeps winding across the karst plateau. It is a slower, more relaxed riding day over more beautiful mountain passes to Meo Vac, where we stop for lunch.

Afternoon: We ride downhill along the river valley and watch the scenery change: less rock, more green, with softer mountains as you cross into Cao Bang province. We arrive in Bao Lac at about 17:00.

Evening: Dinner and overnight at a local hotel in Bao Lac.

Day 5: Bao Lac – Ba Be Lake (about 150 km)

Riding: about 150 km · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Near Ba Be Lake (local Tay village homestay)

Morning: We start earlier, at about 08:00, to leave time for the lake. About 20 km after Bao Lac we turn onto narrow, bumpy tracks with breathtaking views of terraced rice fields – the best off-road riding of the tour. Along the way you ford a few rivers. We finish the ride with lunch in a peaceful Tay village near the lake.

Afternoon: Time to relax on Ba Be Lake, the largest natural lake in Vietnam – about 8 km long and surrounded by the forested limestone mountains of Ba Be National Park, a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2011. A boat trip on the lake is included.

Evening: Dinner and overnight near the lake.

Note: Ba Be Lake was in Bac Kan province, which merged into Thai Nguyen province on 1 July 2025. Bao Lac remains in Cao Bang province.

Day 6: Ba Be Lake – Hanoi (about 240 km)

Riding: about 240 km · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Morning: The longest riding day. We stay off the main roads for as long as possible as we head south towards the Red River Delta, through areas home to Hmong, Dao, Tay and Nung communities, on a mix of rough tracks and smooth sealed roads.

Afternoon: Lunch on the way, then the final run into Hanoi, timed to arrive before the evening rush hour. Say goodbye to your guide and mechanic, and we take you back to your hotel by taxi. End of services.

Tip: plan your onward flight for the next day rather than the evening of Day 6.

FAQs about the Ha Giang Loop Motorbike Tour 6 Days
1. Does this 6-day tour cover the Ha Giang Loop, and is 6 days enough?

Yes. The tour rides the most famous part of the Ha Giang Loop – Quan Ba Heaven Gate, the Dong Van Karst Plateau, the Ma Pi Leng Pass and Meo Vac – then, instead of returning to Ha Giang city, continues east via Bao Lac to Ba Be Lake and back to Hanoi. Six days covers this bigger loop of about 1,010 km from Hanoi, with daily rides of about 110–240 km.

2. How much does the Ha Giang Loop motorbike tour 6 days cost?

On the joined group tour the price per rider is US$960 on a Honda CRF250L with a twin-share room (US$160 a day) or US$1,110 with a single room (US$185 a day). On a Honda CRF300L it is US$1,080 twin share (US$180 a day) or US$1,230 single (US$205 a day). Prices can change with the low or high season and special requests; private tours on your own dates are quoted separately.

3. What is included in the joined group motorcycle tour price?

An English-speaking tour guide and a mechanic, a Honda XR150L, CRF250L or CRF300L with all fuel, helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads and rain gear, all meals (5 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 5 dinners of local Vietnamese food), twin-share homestays and hotels, the boat rides and river crossings in the itinerary, all entrance fees and permits, hotel pick-up and drop-off in Hanoi, a video of your trip and souvenirs from our team. Vegetarian and other diets can usually be catered for if you tell us when you book.

4. What is not included in the Ha Giang motorbike tour price?

Medical and travel insurance, damage to the motorbike, personal expenses, drinks and tips, international flights, and the single-room supplement unless you book at the single-room rate. Your insurance must cover riding a motorbike of the engine size you will use. A support vehicle, airport transfers and bigger bikes can be arranged at extra cost.

5. How big is the group, and can I join the group motorbike tour on my own?

This is a small-group, fixed-departure tour with 6 to 10 riders, and solo travellers are very welcome – most riders join on their own or as a couple. If none of the 2027 dates suits you, we can run the same route as a private motorcycle tour on your own dates.

6. Do I need a licence to ride on this Ha Giang motorcycle tour?

Yes. Vietnamese law requires foreign riders to carry a valid motorcycle licence from their home country plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention; Vietnam does not recognise 1949-convention IDPs. Riding without the right documents can lead to fines and may void your insurance, so check with your insurer before you travel.

7. How much riding experience do I need for the Ha Giang Loop by motorbike?

This is a challenging tour, so you should be a confident rider with experience on mountain roads and some basic off-road riding. Expect steep hairpins, gravel, mud after rain and river crossings. If you are new to riding, ask us about an easier route or a private tour at a gentler pace.

8. Which motorbikes are used on the Ha Giang motorcycle tour?

Riders use Honda dual-sport bikes: the Honda CRF250L or CRF300L, which the group prices are based on, or the lighter Honda XR150L. All suit steep mountain roads and dirt tracks, and fuel is included. Bigger bikes are available at extra cost – tell us your height and experience so we can match you to the right bike.

9. Can I join the Ha Giang motorbike tour as a passenger?

Possibly – please ask us. Whether a pillion seat or another arrangement is available depends on the departure and the group, so tell us when you send your inquiry and we will confirm what is possible.

10. How far do we ride each day on the motorbike tour?

Daily distances are about 180, 170, 160, 110, 150 and 240 km, about 1,010 km in total. With photo stops, lunch and slower mountain sections, most days are spent on the road from morning until late afternoon; Day 6 is the longest.

11. What are the roads like on this Ha Giang motorcycle route?

It is a mix of on- and off-road riding: small paved country roads, National Road 2, steep and winding mountain passes on the karst plateau, and bumpy tracks with river crossings between Bao Lac and Ba Be. Surfaces change quickly after rain, and roadworks or landslides can cause detours.

12. When is the best time for a Ha Giang Loop motorbike tour?

March to May and September to November usually bring the best riding weather. The rainy season in the north runs roughly from May to September, with heavy showers and occasional landslides, while December to February can be cold and foggy on the plateau. Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027, so the February departure starts just after the Tet holiday.

13. Where do we stay on the 6-day Ha Giang motorbike tour?

You spend three nights in village homestays – with a Dao family at Thac Ba Lake, in a Tay village near Ha Giang and near Ba Be Lake – and two nights in simple local hotels in Dong Van and Bao Lac. Rooms are twin share (single rooms at the single-room rate where available); homestays often have shared sleeping areas and bathrooms.

14. Do foreigners need a permit to ride in Ha Giang?

Foreign visitors have needed a border-area permit for the districts near the Chinese border on the Dong Van Plateau. Your guide arranges it in Ha Giang on Day 2 and the cost is included in the tour price; just carry your original passport.

15. Is a guided motorcycle tour in Ha Giang safe?

It is as safe as the riding itself: the roads are steep and winding, and local traffic includes trucks and buffalo. Helmets are compulsory in Vietnam, our guide sets a sensible pace, the mechanic rides with the group, and we change the plan in bad weather. Ride within your limits and never after drinking alcohol.

16. What should I bring, and what happens to my luggage?

Bring your motorcycle licence, 1968 IDP and passport, sturdy riding boots, long trousers, a warm layer and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen and any medication. Pack a small bag or backpack for the six days – it is carried in bike bags or on your back – and leave your main luggage at your Hanoi hotel. A support vehicle is not included but can be arranged at extra cost.
