North Vietnam Joined Group Motorbike Tour 8 Days Price 2027
The price of this group motorbike tour depends on the bike you ride and whether you share a room. All prices are per rider in US dollars for the full 8 days on the 2027 fixed departures:

- What affects the price: low or high season and special requests. Private tours on your own dates are quoted separately, as private per-day rates depend on group size.

Is 8 Days Enough for a North Vietnam Motorcycle Tour?
Yes – eight days is enough to ride a full loop through both halves of the north: the limestone karst of Ha Giang in the northeast and the high passes and rice terraces of the northwest around Sapa and Mu Cang Chai. It works because every day moves forward on a new road, with no backtracking, and the mountain stages are linked by a few faster sections.
What eight days cannot do is leave much slack. Most days mean six to eight hours on the road, including stops, and only Day 5 has a free morning in Sapa. If you want a rest day, more time on the Ha Giang loop or a gentler pace, ask us about a private version with an extra day.
Motorbike Tour Highlights: Ha Giang, Sapa and Mu Cang Chai
1. Ba Be Lake and a Tay Homestay in Pac Ngoi
The first night is spent beside Ba Be Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam, ringed by forested limestone cliffs. The national park around it became a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2011. You sleep in a Tay stilt house in Pac Ngoi village and eat dinner with the family.
2. Ma Pi Leng Pass and the Nho Que River
Ma Pi Leng Pass runs for about 20 km between Meo Vac and Dong Van, cut into near-vertical cliffs above the jade-green Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon. For many riders it is the most memorable road in Vietnam, and there are safe pull-outs for photos along the way.
3. Dong Van Karst Plateau, the Vuong Palace and Quan Ba Heaven Gate
The rocky highlands of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac form the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in October 2010. On Day 3 you visit the Vuong Palace, home of the Hmong Vuong family, and stop at the Quan Ba Heaven Gate viewpoint. Since Vietnam’s 2025 provincial merger, Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province.
4. Sapa and the Hoang Lien Son Range
Sapa sits at about 1,600 m beneath the Hoang Lien Son range, which includes Fansipan, at about 3,143 m the highest peak in Indochina. You arrive by motorbike on Day 4 and have the next morning free – enough time to walk to the Stone Church or look over the Muong Hoa Valley.
5. O Quy Ho Pass
Leaving Sapa, the road climbs O Quy Ho Pass (Tram Ton), which tops out at about 2,000 m on the border of Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. On a clear afternoon the views over the Hoang Lien Son mountains go on for miles; in winter it is often in cloud, and much colder than Sapa.
6. Mu Cang Chai and Tu Le Rice Terraces
The terraces of Mu Cang Chai, carved by Hmong farmers, were recognised as a national scenic site in 2007. On Day 6 the road climbs over Khau Pha Pass and drops to Tu Le, another valley known for its rice terraces. The fields are flooded around May and June, green in summer and golden around late September and early October.
7. The Da River, Moc Chau Plateau and Mai Chau Valley
Day 7 follows the Da River reservoir, crosses it on a local ferry and climbs to the tea hills of the Moc Chau plateau. The quiet Hua Tat road then drops into the Mai Chau valley, where the last night is spent in a White Thai stilt house in Poom Coong village.
Who This Group Motorbike Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Choose this tour if you:
- are a confident rider with a valid motorcycle licence and a 1968-convention International Driving Permit;
- want to see both Ha Giang and the Sapa–Mu Cang Chai region in one trip;
- enjoy long days in the saddle, simple homestays and riding with a small group of 6–10 riders on fixed departure dates.
Consider another option if you:
- have little riding experience or have never ridden on gravel – the Northwest Loop Vietnam Motorbike Tour 6 Days is shorter;
- want to focus on Ha Giang only – choose the Ha Giang Loop Motorbike Tour 6 Days;
- want more time in the saddle – the Vietnam Motorcycle Tour 12 Days: Hanoi – Sapa – Ha Giang covers the far north at a slower pace;
- prefer not to ride at all – our Hanoi – Sapa Tour 3 Days is a non-riding alternative.
Accommodation Options
Overnight stops follow the route, so the type of accommodation depends on the town. Hotels are simple, clean local hotels; homestays are traditional stilt houses with mattresses on the floor, mosquito nets and shared bathrooms. All rooms are twin share at the standard rate; book the single-room rate if you want your own room.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
These notes come from years of arranging group motorbike and motorcycle tours in northern Vietnam for international riders.
- Licence first: bring your home motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Vietnam does not accept 1949-convention permits, and unlicensed riders face heavy fines under Decree 168/2024 – and may find their insurance will not pay.
- Insurance: make sure your travel insurance clearly covers riding a motorbike of the engine size you will use, plus medical evacuation.
- Weather: the rainy season in the north runs from about May to September, when landslides can close roads for a few hours. December to February is dry but cold, with fog on the high passes – pack thermal layers.
- Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. The 12 February departure starts in the week after Tet, so expect busy markets and some closed shops.
- Helmets and gear: helmets are compulsory in Vietnam. We provide helmet, gloves, pads and rain gear; bring your own riding boots and jacket if you have them.
- Cash: carry Vietnamese dong in small notes for drinks and snacks – mountain villages rarely take cards.
- Pack light: your luggage rides with you, so a soft waterproof bag of about 10 kg is ideal; leave the rest at your Hanoi hotel.

Day 1: Hanoi – Ba Be Lake (about 240 km)
Meals: Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Tay family homestay in Pac Ngoi village, Ba Be Lake
Morning: We pick you up at your Hanoi hotel, fit your bike and gear, and run through a safety briefing. We ride out at around 8:00, using quieter roads to avoid the city traffic, and head north into Thai Nguyen province for lunch in the small town of Cho Chu.
Afternoon: Traffic thins out after lunch and the road climbs into wooded hills with wide mountain views. We reach Ba Be National Park at about 16:00 and stop at Pac Ngoi, a Tay village of stilt houses on the shore of Ba Be Lake, Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake. Dinner and the night are with a Tay host family.
Day 2: Ba Be Lake – Bao Lac – Meo Vac (about 170 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel in Meo Vac
Morning: After saying goodbye to our hosts, we take back roads through rustic villages and patches of forest, with several shallow stream crossings. This is the most off-road morning of the tour, so the guide sets the pace to suit the group.
Afternoon: Lunch is in Bao Lac, a market town in Cao Bang province. The road then climbs over a series of passes with long views of mountain ranges and the Nho Que River before reaching Meo Vac, in the heart of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, at about 17:00. Dinner is in town.
Day 3: Meo Vac – Ma Pi Leng Pass – Dong Van – Quan Ba – Ha Giang (about 180 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Tay family homestay near Ha Giang, or a hotel in Ha Giang city
Morning: Today is the highlight for most riders. We ride Ma Pi Leng Pass, about 20 km of road cut into the cliffs high above the Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon, to Dong Van. Near Dong Van we visit the Vuong Palace, the early 20th-century home of the Hmong Vuong family who once ruled this frontier plateau.
Afternoon: We cross the rocky karst plateau past Hmong villages and stone-walled fields, stop at the Heaven Gate viewpoint in Quan Ba, and descend to Ha Giang in the late afternoon. Depending on the departure, the night is with a Tay family or in a hotel in Ha Giang city.
Day 4: Ha Giang – Lao Cai – Sapa (about 220 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa
Morning: We head west towards the northwest mountains on a good, smooth road, passing green hills, rice fields and hill-tribe villages.
Afternoon: After a short break in Lao Cai city to look across the border to China, the road climbs steadily to Sapa, at about 1,600 m, with terraced fields below and the Hoang Lien Son range ahead. We arrive at about 17:00.
Day 5: Sapa – O Quy Ho Pass – Than Uyen – Mu Cang Chai (about 150 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel or homestay in Mu Cang Chai
Morning: Free time in Sapa until about 13:00. Walk around the town and the Stone Church, look down into the Muong Hoa Valley, or, on a clear day, take the cable car up Fansipan (optional, not included).
Afternoon: After checking out, we climb O Quy Ho Pass (also called Tram Ton), which tops out at about 2,000 m on the border with Lai Chau province, with views over the Hoang Lien Son range. We continue via Than Uyen and reach Mu Cang Chai at about 17:00.
Day 6: Mu Cang Chai – Khau Pha Pass – Tu Le – Phu Yen (about 190 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel in Phu Yen
Morning: We ride up and down through forested Hmong highlands and over Khau Pha Pass, one of the great passes of the northwest, before dropping towards tea-growing hills.
Afternoon: Lunch is in Tu Le, known for its rice terraces. We then follow valley floors covered in rice fields, past Hmong and Thai villages, to Phu Yen in Son La province, arriving at about 17:00.
Day 7: Phu Yen – Da River Ferry – Moc Chau – Hua Tat – Mai Chau (about 160 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Thai family homestay in Poom Coong village, Mai Chau
Morning: A winding road follows the Da River reservoir between water and mountains. We cross the river by local ferry and climb to the Moc Chau plateau, with its tea hills, for lunch.
Afternoon: We turn onto the quiet Hua Tat road, built in the French period, and ride down into the Mai Chau valley, arriving at about 16:30. The night is in a White Thai stilt house in Poom Coong village.
Day 8: Mai Chau – Thung Khe Pass – Doc Cun Pass – Hanoi (about 170 km)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: End of tour (hotel drop-off in Hanoi)
Morning: An early walk through the Thai villages and rice fields of the valley, then we ride out at about 9:00 over Thung Khe and Doc Cun passes.

2. What is included in the group motorcycle tour price?
The price includes an experienced English-speaking tour guide and mechanic, a Honda XR150L, CRF250L or CRF300L with all fuel, helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads and rain gear, all meals on tour, all accommodation (twin-share hotels or homestays), boat rides and river crossings in the itinerary, entrance fees and permits, hotel pick-up and drop-off in Hanoi, a quality video of your trip and souvenirs from our team. Insurance, bike damage, personal expenses, drinks and tips are not included.
3. How many riders join each group motorbike departure, and can I join solo?
Each joined group departure is a small group of 6–10 riders, so solo riders are very welcome and simply join the group. Rooms are twin share at the standard rate; if you want your own room, book the single-room rate.
4. Do I need a licence to join this North Vietnam motorcycle tour?
Yes. Vietnamese law requires foreign riders to carry a valid motorcycle licence from their home country together with an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention; Vietnam does not recognise 1949-convention permits. Riding without the right documents can mean fines and may void your travel insurance, so check with your insurer before you travel.
5. How much riding experience do I need for this group motorbike tour?
This is a challenging route, so you should be a confident rider who is comfortable on long mountain roads, hairpin bends and some gravel and mud. Off-road experience helps on Day 2, which includes back roads and shallow stream crossings. You also need good general fitness for about 150–240 km a day.
6. Which motorbikes are used on the tour?
We use Honda trail bikes – the XR150L, CRF250L or CRF300L – all with fuel included. Group prices are quoted for the CRF250L and the CRF300L. Bigger bikes may be available at extra cost, so tell us your preference and riding background when you enquire.
7. Can I bring a passenger or ride pillion?
Please ask us. Whether a passenger can ride pillion depends on the bike, the rider’s experience and the road conditions on your dates, so tell us when you enquire and we will advise you.
8. How many hours a day do we ride on this motorcycle tour?
Most days start at around 8:00 and finish between 16:00 and 17:00, with stops for photos, lunch and fuel. Day 5 is shorter because you have free time in Sapa until about 13:00, and Day 8 ends in Hanoi at about 16:30.
9. What are the road conditions like in northern Vietnam?
Most of the route is paved but narrow and winding, with steep gradients, blind bends, trucks and livestock on the road. Day 2 has rougher back roads and stream crossings, and in the rainy season landslides and road works can cause delays or detours, which your guide will manage.
10. When is the best time for a North Vietnam motorbike tour?
The driest, clearest months are usually March to May and September to November. The rainy season runs from about May to September, with the heaviest rain in summer, while December to February is dry but cold, often foggy in Sapa and Ha Giang. The rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai are golden around late September and early October.
11. What are the 2027 fixed departure dates for this group motorcycle tour?
There is one fixed group departure a month in 2027, from 9 January to 6 December; the full list is in the 2027 Group Departure Dates table on this page. If none suits you, we can run the same route as a private motorbike tour on your own dates.
12. Where do we stay overnight, and what food is served?
You spend seven nights on a twin-share basis: Tay and Thai family homestays at Ba Be Lake and Mai Chau, hotels in Meo Vac, Sapa and Phu Yen, and a homestay or hotel in Ha Giang and Mu Cang Chai depending on the departure. All meals are local Vietnamese food – 7 breakfasts, 8 lunches and 7 dinners – and vegetarian and most other diets can be catered for if you tell us when you book.
13. How is luggage carried on the motorbike tour?
Luggage travels on the bike in bags or a backpack, so pack light, ideally around 10 kg in a soft waterproof bag. A support vehicle is not included but can be arranged at extra cost, and you can leave extra bags at your Hanoi hotel.
14. Do I need travel insurance for this motorcycle tour?
Yes. Medical and travel insurance is not included, and you must have a policy that covers riding a motorbike of the size you will use, including emergency evacuation. Many policies only pay out if you hold a licence that is valid in Vietnam, so check the wording with your insurer.
15. Do foreigners need a permit to ride in Ha Giang?
Foreign visitors to the border areas of Ha Giang, such as Dong Van and Meo Vac, may be asked for a travel permit. We arrange any permit needed as part of the tour; just bring your passport with a valid visa or visa exemption.
16. Is a guided motorcycle tour in North Vietnam safe?
Riding in the mountains always carries risk, but a local riding guide who knows the roads, a mechanic, well-maintained bikes and protective gear reduce it a lot. Helmets are compulsory in Vietnam, we ride at a steady pace in daylight, and the guide may change the plan in bad weather.
