Is 6 Days Enough for a Northwest Vietnam Motorbike Loop?

Yes – six days is enough for a complete loop of the Northwest if you are happy to ride most of each day. The route covers about 1,090 km, so every day is a full riding day of 150–220 km, with time built in for photo stops, village visits and a short ride through the Muong Hoa Valley in Sapa.

What six days cannot give you is a rest day. If you would like a free day in Sapa, a slower pace on the mountain passes or time to walk in the villages, ask us for a private version with an extra night. Riders who want Ha Giang as well should look at our longer motorbike tours below.

Highlights of the Northwest Loop Motorcycle Tour

1. Mai Chau Valley and a Thai Homestay

The first afternoon leaves the main road for mountain back roads and dirt tracks into Mai Chau, a valley of rice fields and wooden stilt houses of the Thai people. Since the 2025 provincial merger, Mai Chau belongs to Phu Tho province (formerly Hoa Binh). You sleep in a family homestay and walk around the village the next morning.

2. Hua Tat Pass, Moc Chau and the Da River

Day 2 climbs out of the valley past Hmong villages to the Moc Chau plateau in Son La province, known for its tea hills, using the quiet Hua Tat Pass road instead of the highway. In the afternoon you drop down to the Da River reservoir, cross the water and follow the river to Phu Yen – one of the most scenic stretches of the loop.

3. Mu Cang Chai Rice Terraces

Day 3 is the longest mountain day, crossing long, winding passes and the terraced valleys of Mu Cang Chai. About 2,200 hectares of terraces in La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh communes were recognised as a special national relic at the end of 2019. Expect stops in Hmong, Thai and Dao villages along the way.

4. O Quy Ho Pass

Between Than Uyen and Sapa you ride the O Quy Ho Pass, about 50 km long, which climbs to about 2,000 m on the border of Lai Chau and Lao Cai provinces. The first half rolls through large tea fields; the second climbs steadily over the Hoang Lien Son range to Sapa, at about 1,600 m.

5. Sapa and the Muong Hoa Valley

After lunch in Sapa, a short afternoon ride takes you along the Muong Hoa Valley, the classic landscape of rice terraces and Hmong and Giay villages below the town. On Day 5 a quiet mountain road of about 30 km passes Hmong and Red Dao villages before you reach the Chinese border at Lao Cai.

6. Thac Ba Lake

The last night is at Thac Ba Lake, a large reservoir of more than 1,300 forested hill-islands created by the Thac Ba hydropower dam, in the former Yen Bai province (now part of Lao Cai). If time allows on arrival, we take a short boat trip on the lake.

Who This Group Motorbike Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Choose this tour if you:

  • are a confident motorbike rider and want to see Northwest Vietnam from the saddle, on back roads away from the main tourist routes;
  • enjoy long riding days, mountain passes and rice terraces, with stops in ethnic minority villages;
  • are happy to join a small group of 6–10 riders, or want a private departure on your own dates.

Consider another option if you:

  • have never ridden a manual or semi-automatic motorbike – mountain roads, trucks and loose surfaces are no place to learn;
  • do not hold a motorcycle licence and a 1968-Convention International Driving Permit – without them you ride illegally and your insurance is unlikely to cover you;
  • want rest days or more time on foot – our Hanoi – Sapa Tour 3 Days includes a valley trek by private car;
  • want Ha Giang and the Ma Pi Leng Pass – choose our Ha Giang Loop Motorbike Tour 6 Days instead.

Accommodation on the Northwest Motorbike Loop

Accommodation is simple and local, chosen for its location on the route rather than for stars. Rooms are twin share; single rooms are available at the single-room rate shown in the price table above.

Night Place Type
Night 1 Mai Chau Homestay in a Thai stilt house (usually a shared sleeping area with mattresses and mosquito nets)
Night 2 Phu Yen (Son La) Local hotel in town
Night 3 Than Uyen (Lai Chau) Local hotel in town
Night 4 Sapa (Lao Cai) Hotel in Sa Pa ward
Night 5 Thac Ba Lake (Lao Cai) Simple lakeside homestay or guesthouse, confirmed at booking

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

These notes come from years of arranging North Vietnam tours for international travellers.

  • Licence first: Vietnamese law requires foreign riders to carry their home-country licence with a motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention; a 1949-type permit is not accepted. Carry both originals on every riding day, and check with your insurer that motorbike riding is covered.
  • Helmets are mandatory: we supply helmets, gloves, knee and elbow pads and rain gear – wear them all day, even on short village rides.
  • Weather: the rainy season in the northern mountains runs roughly from May to September, bringing slippery tracks and occasional landslides; from December to February Sapa and the high passes can be cold and foggy, so pack warm layers under your riding jacket.
  • Golden terraces: Mu Cang Chai and the valleys around Sapa are usually golden in September, just before the harvest; in May and June the flooded terraces mirror the sky.
  • Tet 2027: Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027. The 15 February departure runs shortly after the holiday, when roads and markets are busy with family travel.
  • Pack light: your luggage travels in bike bags or a backpack, so bring one small soft bag and leave the rest at your Hanoi hotel.
  • Cash: carry Vietnamese dong in small notes for drinks, snacks and tips – ATMs are scarce between the towns.

About This Northwest Loop Vietnam Motorbike Tour 6 Days

This 6-day, 5-night motorbike loop starts and ends in Hanoi and rides about 1,090 km through the mountains of Northwest Vietnam: Mai Chau, Moc Chau, the Da River, Mu Cang Chai, the O Quy Ho Pass, Sapa and Thac Ba Lake. Days are 150–220 km on paved mountain roads, back roads and some dirt tracks. It runs as a joined small group motorcycle tour (6–10 riders) on fixed 2027 departures, from US$960 per rider, or as a private tour on your own dates.

Brief itinerary

  • Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau, about 170 km (L, D)
  • Day 2: Mai Chau – Hua Tat Pass – Moc Chau – Phu Yen, about 160 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 3: Phu Yen – Mu Cang Chai – Than Uyen, about 210 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 4: Than Uyen – O Quy Ho Pass – Sapa – Muong Hoa Valley, about 150 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 5: Sapa – Lao Cai – Thac Ba Lake, about 220 km (B, L, D)
  • Day 6: Thac Ba Lake – Hanoi, about 180 km (B, L)

B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner. Distances and times are approximate and depend on weather, road works and the group’s pace.

Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau (about 170 km)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Thai stilt-house homestay in Mai Chau

Morning: We pick you up from your Hanoi hotel, fit your bike and riding gear and set off at about 08:30. After about 45 minutes of city riding we leave the main road for quiet country lanes through villages, rice fields and low hills.

Afternoon: Lunch in the Yen Lac area, then the first real riding of the trip: mountain back roads and, depending on conditions, dirt sections with views of hills, rivers and stilt houses. We reach the Mai Chau valley at about 17:00.

Evening: Dinner and overnight with a Thai family in a wooden stilt house.

Note: Mai Chau has been part of Phu Tho province since the 2025 provincial merger (formerly Hoa Binh). Off-road sections are chosen on the day according to the weather and the group’s experience.

Day 2: Mai Chau – Hua Tat Pass – Moc Chau – Phu Yen (about 160 km)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Local hotel in Phu Yen

Morning: Breakfast at about 08:00 and a short walk around the village to see daily life in a Thai community. Then we ride up out of the valley onto higher ground with Hmong villages and, near the Moc Chau plateau, turn onto the quiet Hua Tat Pass road for wide mountain views.

Afternoon: Lunch in Moc Chau, then a long descent to the Da River reservoir. We cross the water and ride along the Da River towards Phu Yen – one of the most beautiful stretches of the whole loop. Arrival at the hotel in Phu Yen at about 16:30.

Evening: Dinner in town. This is an easier day, so it is a good time to check that your bike and kit are set up as you like them.

Day 3: Phu Yen – Mu Cang Chai – Than Uyen (about 210 km)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Local hotel in Than Uyen

Morning: A bowl of pho for breakfast at about 07:30 and on the road by 08:00. Today crosses long, winding mountain passes with terraced fields on every slope.

Afternoon: The road leads through the terraced valleys of Mu Cang Chai, recognised as a special national relic at the end of 2019. We make plenty of stops for photos and short visits to Hmong, Thai and Dao villages. Arrival in Than Uyen, Lai Chau province, at about 17:00.

Evening: Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Than Uyen.

Note: this is the longest mountain day. Mu Cang Chai, formerly in Yen Bai province, has been part of Lao Cai province since July 2025.

Day 4: Than Uyen – O Quy Ho Pass – Sapa – Muong Hoa Valley (about 150 km)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa

Morning: A short day in distance but one of the best for scenery. After some off-road riding, the road rolls up and down through large tea fields, then climbs the O Quy Ho Pass – about 50 km long and about 2,000 m at its highest point – over the Hoang Lien Son range to Sapa, at about 1,600 m.

Afternoon: Lunch in Sapa and hotel check-in, then a short ride along the Muong Hoa Valley, with its rice terraces and ethnic minority villages. Back in town at about 17:00.

Evening: Dinner in Sa Pa ward; walk past the Sapa Stone Church if you still have energy.

Note: the top of the O Quy Ho Pass is often in cloud or fog, especially from December to February – we ride it slowly with lights on.

Day 5: Sapa – Lao Cai – Thac Ba Lake (about 220 km)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Simple lodging at Thac Ba Lake

Morning: The longest day, starting at 08:00. Just outside Sapa we turn onto a small mountain road of about 30 km, away from the main road, through Hmong and Red Dao villages with views over terraced paddy fields. At the end of it we stop in Lao Cai for local coffee and a look across the river at the Chinese border.

Afternoon: About an hour on a winding, busier main road, where we ride carefully in single file, then back roads again to Thac Ba Lake, arriving at about 16:00. If time permits, we take a short boat trip among the lake’s forested islands.

Evening: Dinner and overnight by the lake.

Day 6: Thac Ba Lake – Hanoi (about 180 km)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Morning: Most routes back to Hanoi are busy, so we follow quieter back roads away from the main highway. On request, we add a short off-road ride through green tea plantations.

Afternoon: Lunch on the way. The last 15 km or so are in Hanoi’s dense city traffic – we ride slowly together to your hotel, arriving at about 16:00. End of services.

Note: if you are flying out on Day 6, choose an evening flight or, better, stay an extra night in Hanoi.

3. How big is the joined group, and can I join as a solo rider?

This is a small group motorbike tour with 6 to 10 riders. Solo travellers are welcome to join any scheduled 2027 fixed departure and ride with the group. If you prefer, we can run the same loop as a private motorcycle tour for you or your group on other dates, quoted separately.

4. What licence do I need for a motorbike tour in Northwest Vietnam?

Vietnamese law requires foreign riders to carry a valid home-country driving licence with a motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention; 1949-type permits are not accepted. Carry both originals on every riding day and check that your travel insurance covers motorbike riding.

5. How much riding experience do I need for this guided motorcycle tour?

This is a moderate tour for riders who are already comfortable on a geared motorbike. You ride 150–220 km a day on mountain roads with some dirt sections, so previous experience on manual or off-road bikes is strongly recommended; this is not a trip for learning to ride.

6. Which motorbikes are used on the Northwest Vietnam motorcycle loop?

Riders choose a Honda CRF250L or a Honda CRF300L, both dual-sport bikes suited to mountain roads and light off-road tracks; the group price table covers both models. Fuel is included and a mechanic rides with the group. Bigger bikes can be arranged at extra cost – please ask.

7. Can I ride as a passenger or bring a non-riding partner?

Please ask us. Whether a pillion passenger or a support vehicle for a non-riding partner is possible depends on the departure and the route conditions, so we confirm it when you send your inquiry.

8. How many hours a day do we ride on the Northwest loop?

Most days start between 08:00 and 08:30 and finish between 16:00 and 17:00, so expect about 6–8 hours on the road including lunch, photo stops and village visits. Day-to-day distances are about 150–220 km.

9. What are the road conditions like on this motorbike tour?

The loop is mainly paved mountain roads and quiet back roads, with some dirt and off-road sections on Days 1, 4 and 6. Expect steep bends, trucks on the main roads and loose gravel or mud after rain; we can make the route easier or harder within the group’s ability.

10. When is the best time for a Northwest Vietnam motorbike trip?

March to May and September to November usually bring the best riding weather. The rice terraces are flooded in May and June and usually golden in September; the rainy season runs roughly from May to September, and Sapa and the high passes can be cold and foggy from December to February.

11. Where do we stay on the 6-day Northwest motorbike loop?

Night 1 is in a Thai stilt-house homestay in Mai Chau; nights 2 to 4 are in local hotels in Phu Yen, Than Uyen and Sapa; night 5 is in simple lodging at Thac Ba Lake. Rooms are twin share; single rooms are available at the single-room rate.

12. What food is served on the group motorbike tour, and can you cater for special diets?

All meals on tour are included – breakfasts, lunches and dinners of local Vietnamese food such as pho, rice dishes and local specialities. Vegetarian and most other dietary needs can be arranged if you tell us when you book.

13. Do I need travel insurance for a motorcycle tour in Vietnam?

Yes. Travel and medical insurance is required and must specifically cover motorbike riding of the engine size you ride. Many policies only pay out if you hold a valid licence and 1968-Convention IDP, so check the wording with your insurer before you travel.

14. What should I bring, and how is luggage carried?

Bring your licence and IDP, riding boots or sturdy shoes, a riding jacket, warm layers for Sapa and the passes, sunscreen, sunglasses and any personal medicine; we provide helmets, gloves, knee and elbow pads and rain gear. Your luggage travels in bike bags or a backpack on your motorbike, so bring one small soft bag and leave the rest at your Hanoi hotel. A support vehicle is not included but can be arranged at extra cost.

15. Do I need any permits for this motorcycle route?

You do not need to arrange anything yourself: any entrance fees and local permits needed on the route are included and handled by your guide. Just carry your passport, licence and International Driving Permit.

16. Is a small group motorbike tour in Northwest Vietnam safe?

Safety comes first: helmets are mandatory and supplied with full protective gear, the guide sets a steady pace, and a mechanic travels with the group. You need good fitness and riding experience, and we adjust or shorten sections in heavy rain, fog or landslide conditions.
