Nha Trang Transportation: Cam Ranh Airport, Trains & Boats

Most travellers reach Nha Trang by flying into Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR), about 35 km south, then take the airport bus (about 50,000–65,000 VND, 45–60 minutes) or a Grab/Xanh SM car or taxi (about 300,000–450,000 VND, 40–50 minutes). Trains and the completed HCMC–Nha Trang expressway link the city by land, and boats or the sea cable car reach the islands.

Status (checked October 2026): The Vinpearl sea cable car to Hon Tre Island is closed for maintenance from 26 October to 10 November 2026; VinWonders guests cross by boat from Vinpearl Harbour during that time. The expressway from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang has been continuous since the Cam Lam–Vinh Hao section opened in April 2024, and the Van Phong–Nha Trang section north of the city opened in 2025. September–December is Nha Trang’s rainy season, when island boats can be cancelled at short notice.

Key takeaways:

  • Cam Ranh Airport is about 35 km south of the centre: 40–50 minutes by car, 45–60 minutes by airport bus.
  • Grab and Xanh SM (electric) cars and motorbikes work well in Nha Trang and show the fare upfront.
  • Nha Trang station is on the North–South railway: about 7–9 hours from Ho Chi Minh City, roughly 24 hours or more from Hanoi.
  • Dalat is about 3.5–4 hours by road over the Khanh Le pass; Mui Ne about 4–5 hours by expressway.
  • Island trips leave from Cau Da port and Vinpearl Harbour; swimming and diving are banned in Hon Mun’s strictly protected core zone.

Cam Ranh International Airport has a domestic terminal (T1) and a separate international terminal (T2), with flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang plus many routes from South Korea, China, Central Asia and Southeast Asia. Check your terminal before you return.

How Do I Get Around Nha Trang?

Nha Trang’s centre is compact and flat: walk along the Tran Phu beachfront, and use Grab or Xanh SM for anything further. Ride-hailing is cheap, safe and avoids price haggling.

1. Grab, Xanh SM and Be

These apps work across Nha Trang for cars and motorbike taxis. A short car ride in the centre costs about 50,000–120,000 VND; motorbike rides about 15,000–40,000 VND. Xanh SM uses electric VinFast vehicles and is often slightly cheaper. You can pay by card in-app or in cash.

2. Metered taxis

Mai Linh and Vinasun-branded taxis are easy to find. Use the meter and avoid unmarked cars that approach you at the airport or bus station.

3. Walking and cycling

The 6 km Tran Phu promenade is pleasant for walking early in the morning or at sunset. Many hotels lend or rent bicycles for about 50,000–100,000 VND a day.

4. City buses

Local buses connect the centre with Po Nagar, Hon Chong, Cau Da port and the bus stations for about 8,000–15,000 VND. They are cheap but slow, with limited English signage.

5. Renting a motorbike

Scooters cost about 100,000–180,000 VND per day. Legally you need a Vietnamese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, plus a licence from your home country. Under Decree 168/2024, riding without a valid licence is fined about 2–4 million VND for bikes up to 125cc, and travel insurance usually will not pay out if you ride illegally. Always wear a helmet.

How Do I Get to Nha Trang from Other Cities?

Fly from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, take the train along the coast, or use the expressway by bus, limousine van or private car. Dalat and Mui Ne are best reached by road.

Fares are indicative ranges and vary by operator and season, especially around Tet.

1. Flights

Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways and Vietravel Airlines fly to Cam Ranh from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with fewer services from Da Nang and other cities. Book early for Tet and the summer holidays.

2. Train

Nha Trang station on Thai Nguyen street is about 1.5 km from the beach. The fastest SE trains take about 7–9 hours from Saigon; soft sleepers are the most comfortable for overnight runs. Book on the official Vietnam Railways website or at the station.

3. Buses and limousine vans

Sleeper buses and 9–11-seat limousine vans run frequently to Ho Chi Minh City, Dalat, Mui Ne, Quy Nhon and Da Nang. Many offer hotel pick-up in the centre. Main departure points are the Phia Nam (southern) bus station on 23 Thang 10 street and operators’ own offices.

4. Private car

A private car with driver is the most comfortable option for Dalat (via the Khanh Le pass, with waterfall stops) or for a family transfer to Mui Ne. We arrange these on all our Nha Trang tours.

How Do I Get to the Islands in Nha Trang Bay?

Boat tours and ferries leave mainly from Cau Da port in the south of the city, while the Vinpearl cable car and boats from Vinpearl Harbour serve Hon Tre Island and VinWonders.

  • Classic island-hopping tours: visit Hon Mun, Hon Tam and fish farms; group tours about 250,000–600,000 VND per person, private boats from about 2,000,000 VND.
  • Hon Mun Marine Protected Area: swimming and diving have been banned in the strictly protected core zone since 27 June 2022; snorkelling stops are now in permitted areas only.
  • VinWonders and Hon Tre: the 3.3 km sea cable car is included in the VinWonders ticket (1,050,000 VND adults, 800,000 VND children 100–140 cm and seniors 60+; 700,000/550,000 VND after 16:00). See our VinWonders Nha Trang guide.
  • Monkey Island and Hon Lao: boats from Long Phu pier, north of the city; see our Monkey Island guide.
  • Further afield: Diep Son Island and Doc Let Beach are about 50–60 km north and are best reached by car.

Transport Scams and Safety in Nha Trang

Nha Trang is safe to get around, but common transport scams target new arrivals. Using ride-hailing apps avoids most problems.

  • Ignore drivers offering “cheap taxi” inside the arrivals hall; use the official queue or the app pick-up zone.
  • Check that taxi meters are running and the car carries the company name and phone number.
  • Photograph a rented motorbike’s condition before you leave, and do not hand over your passport as a deposit.
  • Book island tours through your hotel or a licensed operator and confirm what is included (lunch, snorkelling gear, entrance fees).
  • In September–December, boats are cancelled when the port authority closes the sea; keep a flexible day.

Local Expert Tips for Getting Around Nha Trang

These tips come from years of arranging Nha Trang tours for international travellers.

  • Check whether your resort is on Long Beach near the airport or in the city – transfer times differ by 30 minutes.
  • Download Grab and Xanh SM before you land and compare fares.
  • Take the morning train from Saigon for coastal views, or the night train to save a hotel night.
  • Do the Dalat trip by private car to enjoy the Khanh Le pass in daylight.
  • If VinWonders falls between 26 October and 10 November 2026, allow extra time for the boat crossing.
  • Choose island tours that respect the Hon Mun core-zone rules – it protects the reef you came to see.
  • Avoid riding motorbikes in heavy October–November rain; Tran Phu floods briefly after downpours.
  • Keep 10,000–50,000 VND notes for buses, parking and boat fees.
