Vietnam Family Holidays

What are Vietnam family holidays with Vietnam Tour Expert?

Our Vietnam family holidays are private, flexible tours paced for children, from a 3-hour Hanoi street food walk to 7-day trips through Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Halong Bay, Sapa, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Each family travels with its own guide and driver, transfers are kept short and hotels are chosen for space and comfort. We adjust every day to your children's ages, energy and interests.

  • Durations: half-day and day tours, or 3–7 days (longer trips on request)
  • Destinations: North, Central and South Vietnam
  • Best for: parents with young children or teenagers, and multi-generation groups
  • Best months: February–April for whole-country trips; October–April in the north; February–August on the central coast

Good to know (2026)

  • The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026; outside that period it is normally closed on Mondays and Fridays, so we plan Hanoi days around it.
  • June to October is storm season in the north. Halong Bay cruises can be suspended at short notice by the authorities, and we always prepare a backup plan for families.
  • Tet (Lunar New Year) 2027 falls on 6 February. Hotels fill early and many shops and restaurants close for several days, so book family trips around that date well ahead.
  • The streets around Hoan Kiem Lake become a pedestrian zone on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings – a relaxed, car-free place for children to explore.

Why choose a family holiday in Vietnam?

Vietnam packs mountains, limestone bays, ancient towns, beaches and river deltas into one long country, linked by short domestic flights and good expressways. Children are welcomed warmly almost everywhere, and the food is easy to love: noodle soups, fried rice, fresh spring rolls and tropical fruit.

Most importantly, a family trip here is full of things to do rather than just things to look at:

  • Boats of every kind – rowing boats through the caves of Tam Coc, kayaks and overnight cabins on Halong Bay, sampans on the Mekong Delta.
  • Gentle adventure – village walks in Sapa, the sand dunes of Mui Ne and the tunnels at Cu Chi for older children.
  • Beaches and cable cars – My Khe Beach in Da Nang, Nha Trang and the Ba Na Hills cable car.
  • Living history – the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An and the Imperial City of Hue.

How to choose the right family tour in Vietnam

1. Families with young children

Fewer hotel changes make a big difference. Pick one region and stay four or five days, such as the Da Nang – Hoi An tour 4 days, which mixes the beach, the Marble Mountains and Hoi An with short drives. We avoid long road days and can leave free afternoons for the pool or the beach.

2. Families with teenagers

Teenagers usually want action. The Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 6 days combines rice-terrace walks in Sapa with kayaking and a night on a Halong Bay cruise, while the Ho Chi Minh tour 5 days adds the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta.

3. Grandparents and multi-generation groups

Choose a slower route with one or two bases, a larger private vehicle and hotels with lifts. The Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay tour 5 days keeps three nights in one Hanoi hotel and one night on board a cruise.

4. One week in Vietnam

With seven days, focus on one region rather than racing from north to south. Our 7-day tours each cover one part of the country well: the north, the centre or the south.

5. School holidays

In July and August the central coast is usually dry and sunny, while the north is hot and in storm season. Over Christmas and Easter the south is dry and the north is cool and pleasant.

Best time for a family holiday in Vietnam

Vietnam has three climate zones, so there is always a good region to visit. As a rule of thumb:

Region Best months Keep in mind
North (Hanoi, Halong, Sapa) October–April Cool to cold Dec–Feb; storms Jun–Oct
Centre (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) February–August Heavy rain and floods Sep–Dec
South (Saigon, Mekong) December–April Short tropical downpours May–Nov

February to April is the sweet spot for a north-to-south trip. Read our Hoi An travel tips for more seasonal detail.

What is included in our family tours: private or small group?

Every family holiday on this page is private: your own English-speaking guide and air-conditioned vehicle with driver, so you set the pace and stop whenever the children need a break. Small-group join-in departures are possible on some routes on request, but most families prefer the flexibility of a private tour.

Multi-day tours usually include:

  • Airport and hotel transfers, private vehicle and driver
  • Hotels at your chosen level (3-, 4- or 5-star), with family or connecting rooms on request
  • Sightseeing, entrance fees and boat trips shown in the itinerary
  • Meals as listed, plus an overnight cruise cabin on some northern tours

International flights and visas are not included. Day tours start from US$24 per person and multi-day tours from US$176 (Da Nang – Hoi An Tour 4 Days); the final price depends on dates, hotel level and the number and ages of children, and the Hanoi Street Food Walking Tour starts from US$23 per person.

Tips from our local team

Jimmy and our guides have arranged trips for many international families. Their favourite advice:

  • Tell us ages early. Child car seats are not standard in most Vietnamese vehicles, and room types and cruise cabins depend on how many children are travelling.
  • Start early, rest at midday. Sightseeing from 8am and a break after lunch keeps everyone happy in the heat.
  • Crossing the road: walk slowly and steadily, holding hands – motorbikes flow around you; never run.
  • Food and water: drink bottled or filtered water and start children on mild dishes such as pho, fried rice and grilled chicken.
  • Pack light rain gear and sun hats at any time of year.
