Is the Hoa Lu – Trang An Group Tour Worth It?

Yes, if you want Ninh Binh’s most complete boat trip at a fixed, all-inclusive group price. Trang An is the core of the UNESCO-listed landscape: its boat routes pass through several dark water caves and stop at island temples, which makes the ride longer and more varied than Tam Coc. Combined with Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, it covers Ninh Binh’s history and scenery in one day, with tickets, boat, guide, lunch and transfers included.

The trade-offs: the boat ride is longer, so it is a full day; boats carry four guests, so you may share with other travellers; and you follow the group’s fixed timetable. If you prefer rice fields and a shorter ride, choose our Hoa Lu – Tam Coc group tour; for your own schedule, choose the private Hoa Lu – Trang An tour.

Tour Highlights

1. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Hoa Lu was the seat of the Dinh and Early Le dynasties from 968 to 1010, before the capital moved to Thang Long (Hanoi). Your guide leads you through the temples of King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh, rebuilt in the 17th century on the old palace grounds. See Hoa Lu on Tripadvisor or Wikipedia.

2. Village Cycling (Optional)

Before lunch you can join a 30-minute bike ride on flat lanes past rice fields, ponds and village homes. Bicycles are included; if you prefer, relax at the restaurant and enjoy the lake and mountain views.

3. Buffet Lunch with Local Specialties

Lunch is a buffet of Vietnamese and Ninh Binh dishes, with a vegetarian option. Drinks are paid locally; tell us about allergies when you book.

4. Trang An Boat Trip through Caves and Temples

The highlight is about 2.5–3 hours on a small rowing boat, four guests per boat, gliding between limestone peaks and through low, dark water caves where you may need to duck. Routes include stops at island temples and shrines, and parts of the landscape were used as a location for the film Kong: Skull Island (2017). Read more on Tripadvisor.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

  • Bring sunscreen and a hat: the boats have no shade. Conical hats and raincoats are lent free on the trip.
  • Keep your phone and camera in a zip bag – water drips from the cave ceilings.
  • Carry small dong notes for drinks and an optional tip for your rower.
  • Weekends and the weeks after Lunar New Year are busiest at Trang An; weekdays are calmer.
  • Wear modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) for the temples at Hoa Lu and on the islands.
