Tour Information & Itinerary

This private Hanoi – Sapa tour 3 days (2 nights) takes you from Hanoi to the rice terraces of Sapa by expressway, with a walk to Cat Cat Village, a full-day trek through the Muong Hoa Valley to Lao Chai and Ta Van, and a final morning for the Fansipan cable car or Sapa town – with your own guide and driver.

Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we tailor to your dates, pace and hotel choice. Sapa is now Sa Pa ward of Lao Cai province (merged with Yen Bai in July 2025). In March 2026 the province tightened its rules on adventure tourism: trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, and local guides, porters and trail helpers are being registered and checked by the communes. We run Sapa treks only with licensed, registered local guides.

Is 3 Days Enough for Sapa?

Yes – three days and two nights is the classic length for a first visit to Sapa from Hanoi. Sapa is about 315–320 km from Hanoi, about 5–5.5 hours by car on the expressway, so the first and last days include a long drive, but the middle day is entirely yours for the Muong Hoa Valley trek, and the final morning leaves time for Fansipan or the town.

What three days cannot do is go deep into the mountains: for remote villages, a homestay night or a longer trek, add a day – or take the overnight train to save daylight hours (see Customise This Tour).

Tour Highlights

1. Cat Cat Village

A short walk below town, Cat Cat Village is the easiest introduction to Black Hmong culture: wooden houses, a waterfall, water wheels and workshops where you can watch indigo dyeing and weaving.

2. Muong Hoa Valley Trek to Lao Chai and Ta Van

The heart of the tour is a guided walk of about 10–12 km through the terraced Muong Hoa Valley, from the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai to the Giay village of Ta Van, past a field of ancient carved boulders. Read more in our Lao Chai and Ta Van guide.

3. Fansipan, the Roof of Indochina (optional)

On a clear morning the cable car lifts you over the valley to the summit area of Fansipan, at about 3,143 m the highest peak in Vietnam and Indochina. The ride is optional and the ticket is not included, so you decide on the day according to the weather.

4. Sapa Town: Stone Church, Market and Ham Rong

Sapa’s centre is small and walkable: the Stone Church built in the French period, the local market and handicraft stalls, and the gardens and viewpoints of Ham Rong Mountain just above town.

5. Rice Terraces through the Seasons

The terraces change colour through the year – flooded and reflective in May and June, green in July and gold from late August to September, before the harvest. Our Sapa travel tips explain what to expect in each month.

Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another

Choose this tour if you:

  • want Sapa’s rice terraces and villages on a short trip from Hanoi;
  • enjoy a full day of walking on village trails with a local guide;
  • prefer a private car and flexible timings to a shared bus;
  • like the option of Fansipan without having to commit in advance.

Consider another option if you:

  • dislike long road days – Day 1 and Day 3 each include about 5–5.5 hours on the road;
  • have limited mobility – the trek follows uneven, sometimes muddy paths, although it can be shortened;
  • also want Halong Bay – our Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay Tour 6 Days combines both;
  • are travelling from December to February and dislike the cold – Sapa nights can be close to freezing.

Accommodation Options

We choose hotels in or near the centre of Sa Pa ward, ideally with mountain or valley views, so you can walk to restaurants in the evening. A night in a family-run homestay in Ta Van can replace one hotel night.

Tier Sapa hotel (2 nights) Typical location
Superior 3-star hotel Centre of Sa Pa ward, walking distance to the Stone Church
First Class 4-star hotel with valley or mountain views Centre or edge of town
Deluxe 5-star resort or hotel Sa Pa ward, often with views over the Muong Hoa Valley

Customise This Tour

This 3-day programme is a starting point. Popular changes include:

  • Night train to Sapa: take the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai (about 7 hours 40 minutes, then about 50 minutes by road up to Sapa) in one or both directions to save daylight – see our Hanoi to Sapa guide.
  • A homestay night in Ta Van: sleep in the valley after the trek and see the terraces at first light.
  • Fansipan included: add the cable car ticket and a fixed time for the summit.
  • Longer treks: add the Red Dao village of Ta Phin or a longer valley route – see our Sapa trekking guide.
  • Add a fourth day: slow the pace with a free afternoon, or visit Silver Waterfall on the mountain pass.
  • Add Halong Bay or Ninh Binh: combine Sapa with the coast – see the tours compared below.

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy

These notes come from years of arranging Sapa tours for international travellers.

  • Sapa is cool: at about 1,600 m, Sapa is much colder than Hanoi, especially from December to February, when nights can be close to freezing. Bring a warm layer in any season and a rain jacket from May to September.
  • Rice-terrace calendar: terraces fill with water in May and June, turn green in July and gold from late August to September; after the harvest the fields are bare until spring.
  • Trekking shoes: the clay paths between Lao Chai and Ta Van become slippery after rain; shoes with real grip matter more than anything else you pack.
  • Fansipan and the weather: the summit is often in cloud, so decide on the morning itself – early cabins usually have the clearest views.
  • Village etiquette: ask before photographing people, and if you want to support local families, buy a handicraft rather than giving money or sweets to children.
  • Book holidays early: Sapa is busy on Vietnamese public holidays such as 30 April – 1 May and 2 September, and around Tet (6 February 2027), so reserve hotels well ahead.
  • The mountain road: the last stretch into Sapa winds steeply – take travel-sickness tablets if you need them, and we stop whenever you ask.

Day by day itinerary

About This Hanoi – Sapa Tour 3 Days

This 3-day, 2-night Sapa itinerary from Hanoi combines a walk to Cat Cat Village, a full-day trek through the Muong Hoa Valley to Lao Chai and Ta Van, and a final morning for the optional Fansipan cable car or Sapa town. The drive takes about 5–5.5 hours each way on the expressway; the overnight train is available on request. It is a sample itinerary – we adjust it to your dates and pace.

Brief itinerary

  • Day 1: Hanoi – Sapa by expressway – Cat Cat Village (L)
  • Day 2: Sapa trek – Muong Hoa Valley, Lao Chai and Ta Van (B, L)
  • Day 3: Sapa – optional Fansipan cable car or Sapa town – Hanoi (B, L)

B = breakfast, L = lunch.

Day 1: Hanoi – Sapa by Expressway – Cat Cat Village

Meals: Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa

Morning: Your guide and driver pick you up from your Hanoi hotel at about 07:30 for the drive of about 315–320 km to Sapa. Most of the way is on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, then a winding road climbs into the Hoang Lien Son range; with a rest stop, the journey takes about 5–5.5 hours by private car. Sapa – officially Sa Pa ward of Lao Cai province since the July 2025 merger with Yen Bai – sits at about 1,600 m, so it is much cooler than Hanoi.

Afternoon: Lunch on arrival, then check in. Walk down about 2–3 km to Cat Cat Village, a Black Hmong village with a waterfall, water wheels and indigo-dyeing and weaving workshops. Your driver collects you at the bottom, so there is no steep climb back up.

Evening: Stroll past the Sapa Stone Church in the town centre and try local dishes such as grilled skewers and hotpot – see our Sapa food guide.

Day 2: Sapa Trek – Muong Hoa Valley, Lao Chai and Ta Van

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa

Morning: Set off with your guide and a local trekking guide into the Muong Hoa Valley, Sapa’s classic landscape of rice terraces. Trails lead down through the fields to the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai, about 2–3 hours on foot.

Afternoon: Walk about 4 km along the Muong Hoa stream, past the ancient carved rocks, to the Giay village of Ta Van for lunch with a local family or at a village restaurant. In total you walk about 10–12 km in 4–6 hours; the car then takes you back to your hotel in about 20–30 minutes.

Evening: Free to relax in Sa Pa ward.

Note: Lao Chai and Ta Van now belong to Ta Van commune. In March 2026 Lao Cai province tightened its rules on adventure tourism: trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, and local guides, porters and trail helpers are being registered and checked by the communes. We run Sapa treks only with licensed, registered local guides. Prefer something gentler? We can shorten the trek or replace it with the Fansipan cable car (ticket not included). In heavy rain we choose a safer route.

Day 3: Sapa – Optional Fansipan Cable Car or Sapa Town – Hanoi

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: –

Morning: Free time in Sapa. On a clear morning you can ride the cable car up Fansipan (optional, ticket not included). The cable car runs for about 6.3 km over the Muong Hoa Valley in about 15–20 minutes, then steps or a summit train lead to the peak marker; allow about 4–5 hours from your hotel. Alternatively, walk up Ham Rong Mountain for views over the town or browse the market.

Afternoon: Lunch in Sapa, then drive back to Hanoi on the expressway (about 5–5.5 hours), arriving in the early evening.

Evening: Drop-off at your hotel in Hanoi (or Noi Bai International Airport on request). End of services.

FAQs about the Hanoi – Sapa Tour 3 Days
1. Is 3 days enough for Sapa?

Yes for a first visit. Three days and two nights gives you Cat Cat Village on arrival, a full day trekking in the Muong Hoa Valley and a final morning for Fansipan or the town. Add a day for a homestay or a longer trek.

2. How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Sapa?

Sapa is about 315–320 km from Hanoi. By private car on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway it takes about 5–5.5 hours including a rest stop.

3. Is it better to go from Hanoi to Sapa by car or night train?

A private car is the most flexible and takes about 5–5.5 hours door to door. The overnight train to Lao Cai takes about 7 hours 40 minutes plus about 50 minutes by road, but saves daylight; we can book it in one or both directions.

4. How hard is the Sapa trek on this tour?

The Lao Chai – Ta Van walk is easy to moderate: about 10–12 km in 4–6 hours on village trails and terrace paths, mostly downhill or flat. Paths can be muddy after rain, and we can shorten the route if needed.

5. Do I need a guide to trek in Sapa?

Yes. In March 2026 Lao Cai province tightened its rules: trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, with local guides registered and checked by the communes, so your trek is led by a licensed, registered local trekking guide alongside your tour guide.

6. Is the Fansipan cable car included?

No. Fansipan is optional on the morning of Day 3, so you can decide according to the weather. We can include the ticket and a fixed time slot if you prefer to book in advance.

7. How long does a visit to Fansipan take?

Allow about 4–5 hours from your hotel. The cable car runs for about 6.3 km over the Muong Hoa Valley in about 15–20 minutes, then steps or a summit train lead to the peak marker at about 3,143 m.

8. What is the best time to visit Sapa?

March to May and September to November usually bring the clearest, most comfortable weather. The rice terraces are golden from late August to September; June to August is green but rainy.

9. How cold is Sapa?

Sapa sits at about 1,600 m and is much cooler than Hanoi all year. From December to February nights can be close to freezing, so bring warm layers.

10. Can I stay in a homestay instead of a hotel?

Yes. We can replace one hotel night with a family-run homestay in Ta Van, so you sleep in the valley after the trek.

11. Is this Sapa tour suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes for active families and fit seniors. The trek can be shortened and Fansipan is by cable car; the main challenge is the long road days to and from Hanoi.

12. What should I pack for a 3-day Sapa tour?

Trekking shoes with good grip, a rain jacket, warm layers, sun protection, a small day pack and some cash for handicrafts and drinks.

13. How do I book this 3-day Sapa tour and how much does it cost?

Send us your dates, group size and preferred hotel level through the tour inquiry form. Prices depend on season, hotel category and the number of travellers, and we reply with a tailored quote within 24 hours.
