Ti Top Island: Best Viewpoint & Beach in Halong Bay

Ti Top Island (Đảo Ti Tốp) has the most famous viewpoint in Halong Bay: a short, steep path climbs to a summit pavilion overlooking hundreds of limestone islands. It also has a small crescent beach. The island is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited with President Ho Chi Minh in 1962. It is a stop on route VHL2, included in the 250,000 VND route fee.

Status (checked October 2026): open daily as normal for boats on route VHL2 (adult route fee 250,000 VND, plus port fee). Swimming is best from about April to October; visits stop when storms close the bay to boats.

Why Ti Top Island is worth seeing:

  • The classic panorama: the best-known photo of Halong Bay is taken from the summit.
  • A beach in the bay: a crescent of white sand with calm water in summer.
  • A slice of history: named after Gherman Titov, with a statue of the cosmonaut unveiled in 2015.
  • Easy to combine: Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave are a short boat ride away.

Is Ti Top Island Worth Visiting?

Yes. The view from the top is the best way to grasp the scale of Halong Bay, and the beach is a pleasant place to cool off. The climb is steep but short, and there are resting points on the way. At midday the path and beach are crowded with day-trippers, so cruises that stop early in the morning or late in the afternoon give a much better experience.

  • Best for: photographers, couples, families with active children and anyone who wants a swim.
  • Skip if: you cannot manage steep steps in the heat; you can still enjoy the beach.
  • Short on time: climb straight to the top (about 15–20 minutes), take your photos and come down for a quick swim.

History of Ti Top Island

Before 1962 the island appeared on maps of Halong Bay as Cát Nàng, and locals also knew it by other names linked to a French ship that sank nearby in the early 20th century. On 22 January 1962, President Ho Chi Minh brought Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, the second person to orbit the Earth, to visit the island. Ho Chi Minh proposed renaming it “Ti Tốp” after Titov, to mark the visit and Vietnamese–Soviet friendship.

In 1997 the Ha Long Bay Management Board improved the beach and built two lookout pavilions in the style of Vietnamese communal houses. In 2015 Quang Ninh Province and the Vietnam–Russia Friendship Association unveiled a statue of the cosmonaut on the island. More background is on Wikipedia.

What to See at Ti Top Island

1. The summit viewpoint

A walking path of about 170 m, mostly steps, climbs to the pavilion at the top. From here you see dozens of junks at anchor, Bo Hon Island with Sung Sot Cave, and layer upon layer of karst islands fading into the distance.

2. Ti Top beach

The small crescent beach (about 500 m²) has fine white sand and clear water in the warm months. There are changing rooms, showers and small shops.
