Thien Cung Cave: Halong Bay’s Heavenly Palace Grotto
Thien Cung Cave (Động Thiên Cung, “Heavenly Palace”) is one of Halong Bay’s most ornate caves, on Dau Go Island about 3 km from Tuan Chau port. Discovered in 1993, it stretches about 130 m and is packed with stalactites, stalagmites and pillars lit in colour. It is visited on route VHL1 together with Dau Go Cave, included in the 250,000 VND route fee.
Status (checked October 2026): open daily as normal for boats on routes VHL1 and VHL5 (adult route fee 250,000 VND, plus port fee). Visits stop only when storms close the bay to boats, mainly between June and October.
Why Thien Cung Cave is worth seeing:
- Ornate formations: dense curtains of stalactites, columns and shapes said to resemble animals and people.
- Close to port: only about 3 km from Tuan Chau, ideal for short trips.
- Two caves in one stop: Dau Go Cave is about 300 m away on the same island.
- A love legend: the story of a dragon prince’s wedding gives the cave its name.

History and Legend of Thien Cung Cave
Thien Cung Cave was discovered in 1993, much later than the neighbouring Dau Go Cave, and was opened to visitors soon after. It formed as water dissolved the limestone of Dau Go Island over a very long period, leaving chambers decorated with flowstone, columns and stalactites.
The legend of the Heavenly Palace
Local legend tells of a beautiful girl named May who won the heart of a dragon prince. Their wedding lasted seven days and seven nights inside the cave, attended by dragons, elephants and celestial guests, whose shapes are said to remain in the stone. May later gave birth to 100 children and bathed them in the cave’s small pools. The story of the 100 children echoes Vietnam’s founding myth of Lac Long Quan and Au Co.
What to See at Thien Cung Cave
1. The entrance stairway
A stone stairway climbs from the pier to the entrance, about 25 m above sea level, through trees on the island’s slope.
2. The main chamber
The cave opens into a high chamber with large central columns that seem to hold up the “roof of heaven”. Curtains of stalactites hang from the ceiling, and guides point out formations said to look like birds, fish, flowers and figures.

3. The “wedding” formations
Along the path, groups of rocks are said to represent the guests at the dragon prince’s wedding, from dancing elephants to dragons.
4. The pools
Towards the end of the cave, small pools fed by dripping water are linked to May’s 100 children in the legend.
5. The exit and Dau Go Cave
Leaving Thien Cung, a short walk of about 300 m leads to Dau Go Cave, usually visited on the same stop.
