Sapa Stone Church: History, Mass Times & Sapa Square

Sapa Stone Church (Nhà thờ Đá Sa Pa), officially the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, is the symbol of Sa Pa in Lao Cai province. Built of hewn stone by French missionaries between about 1926 and 1935, it stands on the central square at the foot of Ham Rong Mountain. Entry is free, and the square in front is the heart of town life.

Status (checked October 2026): open as normal. Entry is free; the interior is usually open around Mass times and the grounds can be visited all day. The church remains an active parish, so visitors should be quiet and dress modestly during services. Since 1 July 2025 Sa Pa has been a ward of the enlarged Lao Cai province (merged with Yen Bai).

Why Sapa Stone Church is worth seeing:

  • Sa Pa’s landmark: the grey stone bell tower appears in almost every photo of the town.
  • French colonial architecture: Gothic-Romanesque style in local stone.
  • Free and central: minutes from most hotels.
  • A lively square: weekend cultural evenings, festivals and people-watching.
  • Beautiful at night when the façade is lit.

History of Sapa Stone Church

The French began developing Sa Pa as a cool-climate hill station in the early 20th century, and the Catholic parish of Sa Pa was established in 1902. Construction of the stone church was led by the Paris Foreign Missions Society from about 1926, and the church was completed and in use by around 1935. Its walls were built from cut stone quarried locally and bound with a traditional mortar.

The church was damaged during the wars of the 20th century and stood neglected for years. After Lao Cai province was re-established in 1991, the authorities allowed its repair in the mid-1990s, and it has since been restored several times. Today it belongs to the Diocese of Hung Hoa and remains an active parish church.

What to See at Sapa Stone Church

1. The stone façade and bell tower

The east-facing façade, pointed arches and the bell tower of about 20 m are best photographed from the square in soft morning light.

2. The interior

Inside, a simple nave with stained-glass windows and a modest altar reflects the church’s role as a mountain parish. Visit quietly when the doors are open.

3. The bell

The tower holds a large bell, about 1.5 m tall, still rung for services.

4. Sa Pa square

The square in front is the stage for cultural performances, the Sapa Love Market evening on weekends and seasonal festivals.

5. The church at night

Floodlights make the grey stone glow after dark, while street-food stalls and the night market set up around the square.

6. Gateway to Ham Rong

The entrance to Ham Rong Mountain is right beside the square, so the church is the natural starting point for the climb.
