Tram Ton Pass: Heaven’s Gate Sunset & Fansipan Trailhead
Tram Ton Pass is the summit section of O Quy Ho Pass, about 15–18 km from Sapa at roughly 1,900–2,000 m, beside the Tram Ton forest ranger station of Hoang Lien National Park. Known locally as Heaven’s Gate (Cổng Trời), it is free to visit and famous for sunsets, clouds, Love Waterfall and the main Fansipan trekking trailhead.
Status (checked October 2026): open as normal; the viewpoint is free at any time, Love Waterfall (about 70,000 VND) is open in daytime, and Fansipan treks from Tram Ton run with licensed guides. The Sapa side now belongs to Sa Pa ward and Ta Van commune of the enlarged Lao Cai province after the July 2025 merger with Yen Bai. Expect fog and cold wind year-round.
Why Tram Ton Pass is worth seeing:
- The best sunset near Sapa: the Heaven’s Gate viewpoint looks west over the ranges towards Lai Chau.
- Above the clouds: at about 2,000 m it is one of the highest points reachable by car in Vietnam.
- Love Waterfall: an easy forest walk inside Hoang Lien National Park to a 100 m waterfall.
- Gateway to Fansipan: the classic trek to Vietnam’s highest peak starts at the Tram Ton ranger station.
- Quick from town: 30–40 minutes by car, easy to fit into a half day.

Is Tram Ton Pass Worth Visiting?
Yes, it is the easiest big mountain view from Sapa, and it is free. In good weather the late-afternoon light, the clouds and the sight of the road snaking down to Lai Chau make it one of the best short trips in the region. In thick fog you may see little beyond the roadside stalls, so go with a flexible plan.
- Best for: sunset photographers, couples, families who want a short nature walk, and trekkers heading up Fansipan.
- Skip if: the forecast shows heavy rain and zero visibility, or you dislike cold and wind.
- Short on time: combine Tram Ton with Silver Waterfall in a 2–3 hour afternoon loop from Sapa.
Tram Ton Pass and O Quy Ho Pass: What Is the Difference?
They are the same mountain road. O Quy Ho Pass is the official name of the whole 50 km stretch of National Highway 4D between Sapa and Tam Duong in Lai Chau. Tram Ton is the name of the forest ranger station at the top, so travellers and Tripadvisor often call the summit section “Tram Ton Pass”, while Vietnamese visitors call the viewpoint Cổng Trời, Heaven’s Gate. Read our O Quy Ho guide for the full drive, its legend and road-safety advice; this page focuses on what to do at the top.
Hoang Lien National Park
The ranger station guards Hoang Lien National Park, which protects the Hoang Lien Son range, including Fansipan, across Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. The park covers more than 29,000 ha of core forest and is listed as an ASEAN Heritage Park, known for its rich mountain flora.
What to See at Tram Ton Pass
1. Heaven’s Gate viewpoint
The main lay-by at the top looks down over the hairpin bends of the Lai Chau side and across row after row of ridges. When cloud fills the valley, only the peaks stand out above it.
2. Sunset over the western ranges
Because the viewpoint faces west, it is Sapa’s classic sunset spot. Aim to arrive about an hour before sunset (around 16:30–17:00 in autumn, earlier in winter).
3. Love Waterfall (Thác Tình Yêu)
From the car park near the ranger station, a forest path of a little over 1 km leads through bamboo and old trees to Love Waterfall, about 100 m high. The legend tells of a fairy who fell in love with a woodcutter here, the same story linked to the name of O Quy Ho.
4. Golden Stream (Suối Vàng)
The path follows the Golden Stream, which feeds Love Waterfall. Its rocks and pools are pleasant for a rest on the walk back.
5. Fansipan trailhead
The most popular trekking route up Fansipan (3,143 m) starts at Tram Ton, already at about 1,900 m. Fit trekkers do it in one long day; most take two days with a night in a mountain camp. Our Sapa trekking guide compares the routes.
6. Views of Fansipan and the Hoang Lien Son range
On clear mornings, especially in autumn, the ridges of the Hoang Lien Son range and the Fansipan massif appear behind the pass.
7. Roadside stalls
H’Mong vendors sell grilled corn, sweet potatoes, eggs and hot drinks at the top, a welcome warm-up on a cold evening.

Local Expert Tips for Tram Ton Pass
These tips come from years of arranging Sapa tours for international travellers.
- Pack a warm jacket even in summer; the summit is noticeably colder than Sapa town and the wind is strong.
- Look at the sky from Sapa before you go: if the clouds are lifting in the afternoon, the sunset is often spectacular.
- Wear shoes with grip for the Love Waterfall path; the stones are slippery after rain.
- If you want both, visit Love Waterfall first and keep the last hour of daylight for the viewpoint.
- Book a Fansipan trek a day ahead so the guide can arrange permits and porters.
- Add Rong May Glass Bridge only if you have budget and clear weather; otherwise the free viewpoint is enough.
Tram Ton Pass vs Ham Rong Mountain
| Tram Ton Pass | Ham Rong Mountain | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from town | 15–18 km | In Sapa town |
| Altitude | About 1,900–2,000 m | About 1,800 m at the top |
| Views | Wild ranges, clouds, Lai Chau valley | Sapa town and Muong Hoa Valley |
| Cost | Free (Love Waterfall extra) | Entrance ticket |
| Best for | Sunset and nature | Gardens and an easy walk |
Our view: Ham Rong is the easy option if you have no transport, but Tram Ton gives the bigger, wilder mountain scene and the better sunset.
