Is Thanh Ha Pottery Village Worth Visiting?
Yes, as a short craft stop, especially with children or if you enjoy hands-on activities. Today only a few families still work the traditional way, and the village is geared to visitors, but watching a potter shape clay with a foot-turned wheel is memorable.
- Best for: families, craft lovers, photographers and anyone looking for a cultural half day outside the old town.
- Skip if: you expect a large working industrial pottery centre like Bat Trang near Hanoi.
- Short on time: cycle there in the morning, try the wheel for 30 minutes, then visit the Terracotta Park.
History of Thanh Ha Pottery Village
Thanh Ha pottery began in the 15th–16th centuries. During Hoi An’s golden age as a trading port in the 16th and 17th centuries, the village prospered, supplying bricks, roof tiles, jars and household pots for the town and for trade along the Thu Bon River. The village’s products were once presented as tribute to the royal court.
As industrial ceramics spread in the 20th century, demand fell and many families left the craft. Tourism has given it a second life: artisans now make decorative pottery, figurines and souvenirs, and offer workshops. In 2019 the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism added Thanh Ha pottery to the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Since 1 July 2025 the former Thanh Ha Ward has been part of Hoi An Tay Ward, Da Nang city.
The pottery ancestor festival
The village honours the founders of its craft on the 10th day of the 7th lunar month at the Nam Dieu ancestral temple. The festival includes a palanquin procession, pottery contests, folk games and boat racing; in 2025 it took place on 31 August and 1 September.
What to See at Thanh Ha Pottery Village
1. Artisan workshops
Family workshops along the lanes show every stage: preparing clay from the river, shaping on the wheel, drying in the sun and firing. Older artisans still use a wheel turned by a helper’s foot.

2. Try the pottery wheel
Workshops let you make your own pot with help from a potter, typically for 100,000–150,000 VND and 45–60 minutes. Some pieces can be fired and collected later.
3. Thanh Ha Terracotta Park
This privately built park of about 6,000 m² displays terracotta sculptures, a small ceramics museum and a miniature world of famous landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, the Sydney Opera House and the Statue of Liberty, all made in clay. It charges its own ticket.
4. Nam Dieu ancestral temple
The temple dedicated to the pottery founders is the heart of the village’s annual festival and a quiet place to learn about the craft’s history.
5. Terracotta souvenirs
Clay whistles shaped like the 12 zodiac animals are the classic souvenir, alongside vases, lanterns and small figurines.
6. The Thu Bon riverbank
The village faces the river, and drying pots lined up in the sun with boats behind them make one of Hoi An’s most photographed rural scenes.
