Tour Information & Itinerary
This private Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Sapa – Halong Bay tour 7 days (6 nights) fits North Vietnam’s four classic landscapes into one week: Hanoi’s temples and Old Quarter, the limestone river valleys of Ninh Binh, two nights in Sapa with a rice-terrace trek, and a night on a Halong Bay cruise – with your own guide, driver and airport transfers.
Status (checked October 2026): the itinerary below is a sample that we tailor to your dates, pace and hotel choice. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 and normally closes on Mondays and Fridays; since March 2026 trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, with local guides registered by the communes (we use only licensed, registered local guides); and from June to October storms can suspend Halong Bay cruises at short notice.

Is 7 Days Enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Halong Bay?
Yes – seven days is the shortest comfortable way to see all four headline destinations of North Vietnam. Each one gets its own full day or more: a guided day in Hanoi, a day in Ninh Binh, two nights in Sapa with a proper trek, and a 2-day, 1-night cruise on Halong Bay. Every long drive uses the expressways, and no single day has more than about 5–5.5 hours on the road.
Why return to Hanoi after Ninh Binh? Ninh Binh lies about 95–100 km south of Hanoi, while Sapa is about 315–320 km to the north-west. Driving from Ninh Binh straight to Sapa would add about 2 hours to an already long road day, so a night back in Hanoi is the more logical choice – and you keep the same hotel for three nights, leaving your large luggage there while you are in Sapa and on the cruise. If you would rather see Tam Coc at sunrise, we can add a night in Ninh Binh and make it an 8-day trip.
What seven days cannot do is slow down: Days 2, 3, 5 and 6 all start early. If you prefer a gentler pace, drop one region or add a rest day – see the options below.
Tour Highlights
1. Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Temple of Literature
Begin with the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and home to Vietnam’s first national university, then cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple on Hoan Kiem Lake and wander the trading streets of the Hanoi Old Quarter.
2. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital and a Rowing-Boat Trip in Trang An or Tam Coc
Hoa Lu was Vietnam’s capital in the late 10th century; its temples honour King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh. Nearby you glide by rowing boat through caves and under limestone peaks in Trang An or Tam Coc. Hoa Lu and Trang An are part of the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
3. Mua Cave Viewpoint (optional)
Climb about 500 stone steps at Mua Cave for the classic view over the Ngo Dong River and the rice fields of Tam Coc. It is the most photographed panorama in Ninh Binh, and an easy one to skip if your legs are saving themselves for Sapa.
4. Cat Cat Village and the Muong Hoa Valley Trek
In Sapa, Cat Cat Village introduces Black Hmong culture with its waterfall and indigo-dyeing workshops. The next day a guided walk of about 10–12 km follows the terraced Muong Hoa Valley from Lao Chai to the Giay village of Ta Van – see our Lao Chai and Ta Van guide.
5. Fansipan, the Roof of Indochina (optional)
On a clear morning the cable car lifts you to the summit area of Fansipan, at about 3,143 m the highest peak in Vietnam and Indochina. The ride is optional and the ticket is not included, so you can decide on the day according to the weather.
6. Halong Bay Overnight Cruise
Halong Bay was first inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and since 2023 has been part of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage Site. A night on board gives you sunset on the sundeck, kayaking or a bamboo-boat ride and an early visit to Sung Sot Cave before the day-trip boats arrive.
Who This Tour Is For – and Who Should Choose Another
Choose this tour if you:
- have one week and want to see Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Halong Bay on a single trip;
- like a mix of culture, countryside walking and time on the water;
- are happy with early starts in exchange for seeing more;
- prefer a private guide and driver to fixed group schedules.
Consider another option if you:
- dislike long road days – Day 3 and Day 5 each include about 5–5.5 hours on the road between Hanoi and Sapa, and Days 2 and 6 about 2–2.5 hours each way;
- have six days or fewer – our Hanoi – Sapa – Halong Bay Tour 6 Days or Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Halong Bay Tour 5 Days fit better;
- have limited mobility – the trek, the Mua Cave steps and the cave steps on Halong Bay all involve uneven ground;
- are travelling between June and October and cannot be flexible – storms occasionally cancel cruises, in which case we arrange an alternative.
Accommodation Options
In Hanoi we choose hotels within walking distance of the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake; in Sapa, hotels in or near the centre of Sa Pa ward, ideally with mountain views. The cruise category is matched to your hotel level and confirmed when you book.

|---|---|---|---|
| Superior | 3-star boutique hotel in or near the Old Quarter | 3-star hotel in the centre of Sa Pa ward | Cabin with private bathroom on a standard overnight cruise |
| First Class | 4-star hotel around the Old Quarter or Hoan Kiem Lake | 4-star hotel with valley or mountain views | Cabin with private bathroom and window or balcony on a 4-star cruise |
| Deluxe | 5-star hotel in central Hanoi | 5-star resort or hotel in Sa Pa ward | Balcony cabin on a 5-star cruise |

Local Expert Notes by Jimmy
These notes come from years of arranging North Vietnam tours for international travellers.
- Pack for two climates: at about 1,600 m, Sapa is much cooler than Hanoi or Halong Bay, and nights from December to February can be close to freezing. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket whatever the month.
- Travel light to Sapa: you sleep in Hanoi on Nights 1, 2 and 5, so leave your large suitcase at the hotel and take a small bag to the mountains and on the cruise.
- Trang An or Tam Coc? Trang An is the longer boat trip with more caves and riverside temples; Tam Coc is shorter and runs through rice fields that turn gold in late May and early June. Tell us which you prefer when you book.
- Rice-terrace calendar in Sapa: terraces fill with water in May and June, turn green in July and gold from late August to September; after the harvest the fields are bare until spring.
- Trekking shoes: the clay paths between Lao Chai and Ta Van become slippery after rain; shoes with real grip matter more than anything else you pack.
- Fansipan and the weather: the summit is often in cloud, so decide on the morning itself – early cabins usually have the clearest views.
- Passport for the cruise: bring your original passport on Day 6 – cruise companies need it for check-in at the marina.

It is a sample itinerary – we adjust it to your dates and pace.

Day 1: Noi Bai Airport Pick-up – Hanoi City Tour
Meals: Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi
Morning: Your guide and driver meet you at Noi Bai International Airport with a name sign. The drive into central Hanoi takes about 45–60 minutes. Start with the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and home to Vietnam’s first national university.
Afternoon: After lunch at a local restaurant, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple, then explore the Old Quarter and Dong Xuan Market. Hotel check-in follows.
Evening: Free. Try street food or egg coffee near the lake, and get an early night – tomorrow you leave early for Ninh Binh.
Note: if your flight lands in the afternoon, we adjust the order of the visits. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum opens on mornings except Monday and Friday and is closed for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026 – tell us in advance if it is a priority.
Day 2: Hanoi – Ninh Binh (Hoa Lu, Trang An or Tam Coc, Mua Cave) – Hanoi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi
Morning: Leave your hotel at about 07:30 for the drive of about 2 hours (95–100 km) south to Ninh Binh on the expressway. Start at Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Vietnam’s capital in the late 10th century, where temples honour King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh.
Afternoon: After lunch at a local restaurant, board a small rowing boat for the river trip of your choice: Trang An (about 2–3 hours through limestone grottoes and past riverside temples) or Tam Coc (about 1.5–2 hours along the Ngo Dong River through three caves and rice fields). Hoa Lu and Trang An lie within the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. If you still have energy, climb the roughly 500 steps to the Mua Cave viewpoint (optional) for the classic view over the Tam Coc valley.
Evening: Drive back to Hanoi, arriving at about 18:30–19:00. Evening free.
Why Hanoi and not a night in Ninh Binh? Sleeping in Hanoi keeps tomorrow’s drive to Sapa at about 5–5.5 hours instead of 7 or more. If you would like a night in Ninh Binh, we can add a day – see Customise This Tour.
Day 3: Hanoi – Sapa by Expressway – Cat Cat Village
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa
Morning: Leave your hotel at about 07:30 for the drive of about 315–320 km to Sapa. Most of the way is on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, then a winding road climbs into the Hoang Lien Son range; with a rest stop, the journey takes about 5–5.5 hours by private car. Sapa – officially Sa Pa ward of Lao Cai province since the July 2025 merger with Yen Bai – sits at about 1,600 m, so it is much cooler than Hanoi.
Afternoon: Lunch on arrival, then check in. Walk down about 2–3 km to Cat Cat Village, a Black Hmong village with a waterfall, water wheels and indigo-dyeing and weaving workshops. Your driver collects you at the bottom, so there is no steep climb back up.
Evening: Stroll past the Sapa Stone Church in the town centre and try local dishes such as grilled skewers and hotpot – see our Sapa food guide.
Day 4: Sapa Trek – Muong Hoa Valley, Lao Chai and Ta Van
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Sapa
Morning: Set off with your guide and a local trekking guide into the Muong Hoa Valley, Sapa’s classic landscape of rice terraces. Trails lead down through the fields to the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai, about 2–3 hours on foot.
Afternoon: Walk about 4 km along the Muong Hoa stream, past the ancient carved rocks, to the Giay village of Ta Van for lunch with a local family or at a village restaurant. In total you walk about 10–12 km in 4–6 hours; the car then takes you back to your hotel in about 20–30 minutes.
Evening: Free to relax in Sa Pa ward.
Note: Lao Chai and Ta Van now belong to Ta Van commune. In March 2026 Lao Cai province tightened its rules on adventure tourism: trekking tours in Sapa may only be organised by licensed travel businesses, and local guides, porters and trail helpers are being registered and checked by the communes. We run Sapa treks only with licensed, registered local guides. Prefer something gentler? We can shorten the trek or replace it with the Fansipan cable car (ticket not included). In heavy rain we choose a safer route.
Day 5: Sapa – Optional Fansipan Cable Car – Hanoi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch · Overnight: Hotel in Hanoi
Morning: Free time in Sapa. On a clear morning you can ride the cable car up Fansipan (optional, ticket not included). The cable car runs for about 6.3 km over the Muong Hoa Valley in about 15–20 minutes, then steps or a summit train lead to the peak marker; allow about 4–5 hours from your hotel. Alternatively, walk up Ham Rong Mountain for views over the town or browse the market.
Afternoon: Lunch in Sapa, then drive back to Hanoi on the expressway (about 5–5.5 hours), arriving in the early evening.
Evening: Free in the Old Quarter.
Day 6: Hanoi – Halong Bay Overnight Cruise
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Overnight: Cabin on the cruise
Morning: Pick-up from your hotel between 07:30 and 08:00 for the drive of about 2.5 hours on the expressways to Tuan Chau International Marina in Ha Long. Bring your original passport – it is needed for cruise check-in.
Afternoon: Board your cruise around midday for a welcome drink, a safety briefing and lunch as the ship sails among the limestone islets of Halong Bay. In the afternoon, kayak or take a bamboo boat around a sheltered lagoon, and visit an island or beach such as Ti Top Island, depending on the route assigned to your cruise.
Evening: Watch the sunset from the sundeck, then enjoy dinner on board. Some cruises offer squid fishing after dinner.
Note: the exact order of stops depends on the cruise and the route approved by the Halong Bay authorities; it is confirmed when you book. Cruises can be rerouted or suspended in bad weather.
Day 7: Halong Bay – Sung Sot Cave – Hanoi / Noi Bai Airport
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (brunch on board)
Morning: Wake up to the bay with tea or coffee (many cruises also offer a short tai chi session). After a light breakfast, visit Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, one of the largest caves in Halong Bay, reached by a flight of steps. Back on board, join a Vietnamese spring-roll cooking demonstration and check out of your cabin.
Afternoon: Brunch as the ship returns to the marina, then disembark around midday. Your driver takes you back to your Hanoi hotel (about 2.5 hours) or straight to Noi Bai International Airport (about 2.5–3 hours). For an international flight, we recommend a departure after about 19:00. End of services.

Tour Inquiry
FAQs about the Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Sapa – Halong Bay Tour 7 Days
1. Is 7 days enough for Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Halong Bay?
Yes, if the days are planned well. Seven days gives you a day in Hanoi, a day trip to Ninh Binh, two nights in Sapa with a village walk and a valley trek, and a 2-day, 1-night Halong Bay cruise. Add an eighth day if you want a night in Ninh Binh or a homestay in Sapa.
2. What is the best 7-day itinerary for North Vietnam?
For a first visit, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Halong Bay is the classic combination: culture in the capital, limestone river scenery in Ninh Binh, rice terraces and ethnic villages in Sapa, and a night on Halong Bay. This tour orders them so that each long drive starts from Hanoi.
3. Why does the tour return to Hanoi after the Ninh Binh day?
Ninh Binh is about 95–100 km south of Hanoi and Sapa about 315–320 km north-west. Sleeping in Hanoi keeps the drive to Sapa at about 5–5.5 hours instead of 7 or more, and you keep the same hotel for three nights. A night in Ninh Binh can be added as an extra day.
4. How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Sapa?
Sapa is about 315–320 km from Hanoi. By private car on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway it takes about 5–5.5 hours; the overnight train to Lao Cai takes about 7 hours 40 minutes, plus about 50 minutes by road up to Sapa.
5. How far is Ninh Binh from Hanoi?
Tam Coc and Trang An are about 95–100 km south of Hanoi, roughly 2 hours by car on the expressway, which makes Ninh Binh an easy full-day trip from the capital.
6. How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay? Can you fly?
The drive from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Marina in Ha Long takes about 2.5 hours on the expressways. There are no scheduled flights between Hanoi and Halong Bay, and the seaplane service stopped operating on 1 April 2026.
7. Should I choose Trang An or Tam Coc?
Both are rowing-boat trips through caves and limestone scenery. Trang An takes about 2–3 hours and passes more caves and riverside temples; Tam Coc takes about 1.5–2 hours along the Ngo Dong River and is best when the rice turns gold in late May and early June.
8. Is Mua Cave included and how hard is the climb?
Mua Cave is an optional stop on Day 2 if time and energy allow. The climb is about 500 stone steps to the viewpoint; allow about an hour up and down, and skip it if you have knee problems.
9. How hard is the Sapa trek on this tour?
The Lao Chai – Ta Van walk is easy to moderate: about 10–12 km in 4–6 hours on village trails and terrace paths, mostly downhill or flat. Paths can be muddy after rain, and we can shorten the route if needed.
10. Is the Fansipan cable car included?
No. Fansipan is an optional activity on the morning of Day 5, so you can decide according to the weather. We can include the ticket and a fixed time slot if you prefer to book in advance.
11. What is the best time for a Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Halong Bay tour?
March to May and September to November usually bring the most comfortable weather across all four places. Late May to early June is harvest time in Tam Coc, late August to September is golden-rice season in Sapa, and Sapa nights are cold from December to February.
12. Can a Halong Bay cruise be cancelled because of the weather?
Yes. Between June and October the authorities can suspend cruises when a storm approaches. If that happens, we rearrange the day or offer an alternative such as an extra day in Ninh Binh or Hanoi.
13. Is this tour suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes for active families and fit seniors. The trek can be shortened, Mua Cave is optional and the cruise suits all ages; the main challenge is the long road days to and from Sapa.
14. Can I take the night train to Sapa instead of driving?
Yes. We can book the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai for one or both directions, with a transfer of about 50 minutes up to Sapa. It saves daytime hours but adds a night on the train.
15. How do I book this 7-day tour and how much does it cost?
Send us your dates, group size and preferred hotel level through the tour inquiry form. Prices depend on season, hotel and cruise category and the number of travellers, and we reply with a tailored quote within 24 hours.
